One of my amigos was writing on the "reject forum" about selling assets and moving to Latin America. I dabbled with it a couple years ago and here is my suggestion: think this thing through!  Unless you have a very large bankroll or continued income from the US i.e. a pension, it will be very difficult to replace the income you are making in the States.  If Colombia is your destination, it is not the bargain that it once was with a stronger peso and higher prices so you may burn through money without income to replenish your piggybank.  Secondly, it is not the safest place to live.  Finally, unless you speak excellent Spanish or have a devoted girlfriend, it will be a pain in the ass to get anything done.  I say don’t do it..but if you must – again think it through.  If you have a good job here – but have not yet connected with a lady then rework the strategy but make moving there a last resort unless you can afford it for the long haul and have the income to retire. To my amigo..just say NO!

Reread this sage advice twice a day at least twenty times for a month THEN make your decision.

"Unless you have a very large bankroll or continued income from the US i.e. a pension, it will be very difficult to replace the income you are making in the States."

"Finally, unless you speak excellent Spanish or have a devoted girlfriend, it will be a pain in the ass to get anything done."

Asides from a long-time resident in Colombia and married to a Colombiana.

1.  Try it BEFORE you buy it. (Remember living outside the USA is a lot like camping out.  What you are use to in the USA will not be here.) Come down for a MIINIMUM of six months. Also remember the best place to buy used furniture/appliances is to look in the classifieds for gringos returning to the states.  Me? Been here so long I'll die hear-happy.

2.  Safety is, IMHO, not too much problem, especially in the larger cities.  There is an element of risk no matter where you live.  Take Miami.  Try a trip to Liberty City or Overtown for a real thrill.  Just being alive involves risk.  What the hell, 1,000 years ago you could have walked down to the lake to pick berries and a bear jumps out and eats you.

In spite of the pesos strength(IMHO it was too high to begin with)Colombia is still damn cheap, especially places like Santa Marta.  The government, i.e. Banco de la Rpública, the central bank, will  continue to support the dollar to make exports more profitable.

sounds like we are mostly in agreement. on point 2, hotels, restaurants and cocktails are not such a bargain anymore in my view. I had a martini in Bogota at a popular spot - cost $15000 pesos. same price as the US. But rent, services like housekeeping, haircuts, etc are cheap

For the reasons you just wrote, I never considered relocating. But do the ladies know this as well, and do they assume that a foreign man interested in marriage will ask them to relocate?

Most of the ladies I have met seemed very interested in moving to the US.  There are some exceptions, most notably when they have really strong family ties and cannot bear the separation or are from Medellin where the lifestyle for many is rather pleasant and the climate is nice. Relocations while a concern is not something to give much thought assuming you are still searching. Meet a lady you like and then worry about their moving here. most will be delighted to relocate
