Well I imagine spirits are down today in Colombia as their soccer team was eliminated from the World Cup yesterday.  Four teams from South America had already qualified but the fifth team (which will play Australia in a playoff to enter World Cup) was still up for grabs.  The 3 teams vying for the spot were Uruguay, Colombia and Chile.  Each had a chance depending on last nights games but Uruguay controlled their own destiny.  If they beat Argentina, they would enter regardless of the Colombia & Chile outcomes.

For those who may not remember, Colombia was eliminated in the 2002 World Cup under very similar if not suspicous circumstances. If Argentina had beaten Uruguay in final game, Colombia would have advanced.  Well that was not to be the case, Argentina who had already qualified, played the game as if they didn't care.  In fact they played so sluggishly that FIFA (the soccer organization body) was considering an investigation.  The whole thing basicly stunk, Argentina and Uruguay are like close cousins.  Many felt that the game was thrown & just one more reason for Colombians not to like Argentinians...hehe

Well before yesterdays match with Uruguay, the Argentinian coach felt compelled to say that they'd play hard and try to win.  Well as it turns out, Argentina played just hard enough yesterday to lose but not to look too bad.  They had learned their lesson from 4 years ago.  Colombia played like their life depended on it and won but were eliminated.  My guess is that the feeelings for Argentina today are low...

Yes they did.  The U.S. finished first from the North and Central American qualifying zone.

Thirty-two teams qualify, it breaks down like this:

Europe (UEFA)         14
Africa                 5
South America          4.5
Asia                   4.5
North & Cent America   3.5
Oceanian                .5

The fifth place team in South America (Uruguay) plays the winner of Oceania group (Australia) for one of the remaining spots.  Also the 5th place winner in Asia plays the 4th place from our group.

Here's the teams that have so far qualified:

Bottom Line
If they really deserved to be in the World Cup , They should have played better during qualifying. No conspiricy here, just a not so great team.

Colombia should never have put itself in this situation to begin with and so in that sense I agree with you.  Had they beaten Chile instead of tying them last week, they would have controlled their own destiny.  Nothing that had occured between Argentina and Uruguay would have mattered.

But that didn't happen. Qualifying out of the most successful group of soccer nations (South America) is not a given, it's difficult, often times it's settled in the very last matches.

I personally  think the 2001 game between Argentina and Uruguay was a huge joke.  Maybe not a conspiracy as such but Argentina was content to do nothing, neither team played to win, a tie would send Uruguay through. Do I think that Argentina preferred that Uruguay enter the world cup in 2002, yes.  Do I think Argentina took it easy in the game, yes.  Do these kind of things happen in the sometimes corrupt world of soccer, all the time.  For instance, Mexico was disqualified from World Cup 1990 after a youth national team of theirs played overaged players.  Or have you ever watched the U.S. play in Central America with a latin american referee.  The Latin American referee's almost always favor the Central American team.  I try to be objective but it's not even subtle favortism, it's blatant. Also, soccer in many cases is just a game of inches. United States qualified for the 1990 World Cup after 40 years of absence.  They were away from home, needed a win in the last game, and they scored on a fluke shot from 30 yards.   A few inches to the right and no trip to Italy for the U.S.. So even the smallest thing that one team does can mean the difference between going and not going for another.

As for this year, a lot tougher to tell if Argentina played less than they're capable of, nevertheless I'm sure the Colombians are wondering.

If they had taken care of business against Venezuela they wouldn't have to worry about what Argentina did.
