... in response to Immigration States of Emergency Declared, posted by Gary Bala on Aug 22, 2005

The governors of those 2 states have been battling the federal government for months for it to deal with the illegals flowing over the border.  They felt so little was being done by INS, ICE, etc. that they declared states of emergency 2 weeks ago.  The debate now is whether they will call up the National Guard to patrol the border, a function that federal police forces are supposed to do.

They complain that among the illegals coming across for work, are also illegals coming across smuggling drugs, kidnapping, stealing cars, etc.  The federal officials are trying to draw up laws that will permit the entry of guest workers so that US business can "legally" exploit the cheap labor the illegals provide.  California and Texas are expected to be drawn into the fray soon.  It's a holy mess!

My question to Gary is whether any of this is going to spill over into the LEGAL migration area and affect the visas we apply for.
