Sorry Gator, usually you give very sound advice on this and other forums, but you're dead wrong on this one.

NO WAY should a gringo go to a poor country like Colombia and even think for one split second that a woman should pay for such a pricey item as a wedding band.  Please!!!
The majority of these women can barely get by in buying the necesities, and you expect them to purchase your wedding band??  Sure, in the real world, this would be proper...but forget about it in Colombia.  Go ahead and buy the rings yourself...if she wants to do something to help out, let her plan the wedding like Utopia's wife did...or have her help in making the wedding dresses or reception decorations...but please, don't expect these women to pay for things.

Some people in Colombia have a few pesos.  What makes you think Colombia is not part of "the real world?" Did you ever think she might WANT to by your wedding band?"

Last, but not least, it is not that pricey in Colombia.  I stick by what I said.  I don't expect my wife to pay for things-but she did want to follow tradition.

P.S.

If the girl is from a very poor family and works a menial job that would change things.

Well Gator, of course if she WANTS to buy the wedding band, that's great.  I know that you live there, but I would venture to say I've known just a tad more single Colombian women and have more relationships with them than you...
I'm telling this newbie DON'T expect the girl to buy the ring...nothing more, nothing less.  Plus, who in the hell wants a cheap ass ring purchased in Colombia???  Why not buy the best, something that reflects the preciousness of the union, a ring that will last a life-time, something both parties can be proud of...not something that looks like it came out of a cracker-jack box.

No Gator, MOST Colombian women can't afford to buy a very nice wedding band...that is the "real world" of Colombia.

Our wedding bands were purchased in Colombia and are made of 18K gold. Most Colombianas look down on the gold here since it is usually less than 18K. BTW, my wife did buy the bands.
