Thank you friend.  I appreciate the info.  One other question...making a copy of one's passport:  should I do it here before I leave and have it notarized, or do it in Colombia and have it notarized?  Does it make a difference?

Well you can just zerox a copy or two and put it in your suitcase.  Actually it is no big deal as Colombia has you on record upon entry, flt number, projected length of stay, hotel, and also use the same high tech immigration hardware as U.S. Immigration except for fingerprinting.
If you like just have the hotel lock it up for you.  when i go to Colombia i just leave my passport at the apartment / hotel and carry my Texas`drivers license with me.  Colombia is no different than anywhere else.  If you go at 2AM to certain areas on the south side of San Antonio one is probably going to get hurt.  If you are with a girl just follow her lead about what or what not to do.  I would not have my billfold in my back pocket at Disney World either.
The biggest overblown issue on this board is how hot all the chiquitas are.  Women are women, and many of these hot looking chiquitas just want a one way ticket here, and or  those with a kid or two only look at older gringos for a father and home for their kid, not unlike single american women with a kid. The real kicker is if you bring her up here you will never really know if she came because of you, but more probably and reasonably because of her kid.  Another issue is if you bring her here with a kid and she dumps you, you are going to be also responsible for her kid.  Remember love went out the window at age 30, and these forays to a foreign country are business deals no different than arranged marriages as in India.  There are 5 good Colombiam women without a kid for every good Colombian women with a kid, so in your travels if you are only around ones with kids someone is doing you a dis-service.  Also it is not how much education with her hot looks she has which many on this board make an issue of, but more important is her class and character in the same ballpark as yours.  My point being many on this board equate  education to class and character and in the real world is not this way.

I agree with all that you just posted. I could also disagree with some of it, or possibly counter argue with an opposite spectrum point of view, but would rather have the experience firsthand and wait until I have made some journeys south of my own before drawing my own opinions regarding the motivations that women hold. Thanks for your insight.  It helps a lot.

You issue is you probably feel if one has an education it in turn equals anothers class and character.  As i am somewhat older and travel the world, Americans followed by Canadians in the last 40 years are living in a politically correct society which the rest of the world disagrees with.  For example under the Koran two women equal one man, so under their religion it is impossible for them to have a western style politically correct democracy as we have, and they will fight against it as they are now doing. This is my point, their education does not change their class and character of life. Enough of politics and i apologize.
Since deeds speak louder than words, you are going to south america, notwithstanding all the available american women here, which says you are not happy about an issue or two yourself.  I just want to make sure you understand that there are more women in Colombia, Russia, etc that would give anything to come here.  I also want you to understand if you want a wife, then find one that wants to be your wife first in life.  If you find an educated professional and bring her here, it would only be natural for her to want to continue her career.  The problem then is that her career will come first, as your wife second, and at your expense.  If this is your goal then it would be a waste of time so just marry an american professional girl and save yourself the money.  At my age i have learned women are women no matter where they are from, and the sweet little young Russian or Colombian girl is a lot of hype and a sales gimmick for agencies.  Being from south texas it is true their religion plays an important role in life, but american latino women are no different, religion or not than liberated american angla women.
Reasonably speaking any serious`man can find a potential wife there in at most 2 trips.  Many men on this board are womanizers, and other have been there so many times, no matter how many more times they would never find a wife as they are either wusses, little kings, or chasing after girls less than half their age. The issue is for you to take your time, try to meet at least 4 or 5 girls for there is a difference, to really think seriously about one with a kid versus without, and do not become`disappointed.  Also remember there are several ethnic women groups there, so be sure you are going to an area of Colombia that has more of a choice of your desires, like why go looking for a chevrolet at a ford dealer.  Out of a hundred men, 90 are talkers, and maybe 10 would ever go in the first place, so look at this as the great adventure. A really good guy to private mail with on this board for questions is a person named pete who lives in cali.  He posts a lot on this board so you can not miss him.  He is a little older than me.  I met him finally in seattle last month as i was up there for a few days and he was taveling through on vacation. For a`caifornia liberal versus this texas conservative, we agree on 99% on issues dealing with colombian women. ws

Education not equalling class or character was one of the many things that I agreed with in your previous post.  The only thing I questioned was where you said that after 30 love goes out the door and relationships are more like business deals.  Each person approaches relationships in a different way.  For different reasons.  But there are still many people who can still find love no matter what age they are.  No matter how many times before they have failed.  I'm not talking about my own personal goals or desires, but rather speaking from observations in my everyday life.

I understand what you are saying.  However you were married once i assume, and for whatever reason which is not my business you no longer are.  Except for a spousal death, those of us previously married did so "in love" and divorced so "out of love". For one to go to Colombia, pick out a girl, marry her and call it love i do not agree with. For example whatever your reason in choosing Colombia, you have made a decision not unlike a business decision looking for a new market outlet.  On your side of the fence you have already defined what you want for a wife, a certain age, a certain look, a certain amount of education, a Colombian National, etc. etc. etc. have passport, will travel, have a 100 women to choose from, and if it does not work may try Peru next.  Now on the Colombian women side of the fence.  95% of these girls do not have tourist visas to the states as they almost are impossible to get, There are only so many potential Gringo husbands who will show up in Colombia. There are a 100 girls for every gringo who will fight, cheat, lie, etc. etc. etc. and do almost anything to nab a gringo and get out of Colombia. You have read on this board where a gringo has gone to Colombia to see a girl he has never met, does not know if there will be chemistry and only corresponded with her.  Yet even before meeting the girl he has been invited to stay with her family, etc etc. Now how many american girls and their family would do the same?  The worst thing any man can do is go to another country and marry a girl for what he thinks is love, (because she told him she loved him after one week). Love blinds a man in to stupid things.  This is why you need to look at this like a business deal, an open mind, and with a potential of long term debt on a bad loan if you do not make a correct decision.  Remember a Colombian girl if not married by 30 is is a "has been" and will probably never get married, at least to a Colombian man as he considers her an old lady. Most of these girls have nothing, so to nab a gringo they have everything to gain and nothing to lose as they have nothing in the first place, while  you have everything with the possibility of everything to lose.  ws

I go thru Miami for the most part. I cannot stand them I think sometimes the custom agents get carried away with their job. I was patted down by one of them last year. I think what really pissed me off was the guy did not even pat me down right. I told him the reason his wand went off was my zipper he kept rubbing the back of his hand on my left pocket which had nothing in it. They cuts the locks off my bags and smashed a bottle I had in one of them. The bottle was very thick and appeared to have been hit with a hammer or other such device.

Never, I repeat Never use Avianca.  Which leaves you with American Airlines into Colombia.
