Yes, I'm Hispanic in a very strange way. One of my ancestors was a sailor on a ship in the Spanish Armada. After his ship was wrecked and sank, he survived and hid at a nearby farm. He ended up marrying the farmer's daughter and changed his name to the very English name of John Melford. You didn't ask how much Hispanic!

My family history is the same. The story in my family is that he was a captain of one of the ships and ended up working for a merchant in Bath. Eventually changed his name to Moorcroft.

It makes you wonder about these family stories. I am sure that they contain some truth but how much? I've read a little about the Spanish Armada and I understand a great many ships floundered off the coasts of Scotland, Ireland and England so it's quite possible for many sailors to have survived and sought refuge. I'd love to find the time to track this down further.

Interesting in my case I'm ADOPTED so I really have no clue what I "really" am. I look "white" my features are NOT Latino/Hispanic features. But I was raised in a Latino/Hispanic household. The only thing that bothers me is I kept getting referred to as a "Mexican" as far as I can trace my ancestry no one ever lived in Mexico. Unless you consider Texas back in whenever it was as part of Texas. They have been living in Texas for generation. Neither my grandparents or greatgrandparents lived in Mexico. Anyways Spanish WAS my first language. Funny thing is the Colombians & Panamaninas say I have a Mexican accent. The reality of it is the Mexicans make fun of our Tex Mex Spanish.

It ALWAYS pisses me off when people (usually white Anglos) here in Texas refer to anyone who is Latino as Mexican. When I inquire as to the person in question's citizenship or ancestry, invariably they are no more Mexican than the speaker. Talk about ignorance.

you have a Mexican accent - ok, maybe Tex Mex. FYI, I used to live in Dallas in the 80's and have traveled often to the border

Remember what Teddy Roosvelt said, we are not Irish Americans, German Americans, Black Americans, etc, but we are all Americans. This is the way in which we should all identify ourselves. I , myself, am a descendant of over 23 different diffent nationalities. I am an American first  and not from any particular group or nationality

That's the way I look at things. I never got much of that problem with the Ukrainian ladies but I'm getting a lot of questions from the Lating Americans. I keep telling them I'm an American first & a Texas second.
