One thing the ultra-liberals in the U.S./Europe and the terrorists in Iraq clearly have in common is a desperate desire to see the liberation of Iraq/Afghanistan fail.  Were it to succeed, they would be haunted forever for their shabby prescience.

It's interesting how so many criticize the U.S. invasion of Iraq now, while--in the same breath--begging for an explanation as to why we didn't carry through with an invasion of Iraq after the Gulf War in '91.  In invasion is an invasion is an invasion.  If you were for it once, why the sudden (and hypocritical) change of heart?

Blame it on the "dunce factor".  Were Bush as charismatic as Teddy Rosevelt (who didn't shrink after remarking:  "I don't know what the people think, I only know what they should think"), I doubt the "outrage" over his actions would have been as intense/widespread.

Doombug,

I liked your reference to Teddy Roosevelt.  He was certainly a great president.  In fact, I think he was a much better president in most ways then his cousin Franklin.  Teddy was a Republican, and Franklin, a Democrat, but that is not the only reason why I said that.  Most of my recent ancestors (grandparents, etc) were Democrats in the mold of Franklin Roosevelt.  The depression was extraordinary times, that is for sure.  But, most all the government programs created during that time has stuck like glue throughout the years.  Those Democrats never saw a government program they didn't like.  Teddy was not so inclined!

I agree with you totally. There are different types of Muslins, like there are different groups of Christians. Some Muslin women wear shorts, two-pieced bikinis, and no not put the scarf over their heard

I didn't see, nor do I agree with the "all Muslim countries" assertion, but here's my take:

Turkey-- relatively free country, not run by despots and kleptocrats who gain by blaming the people's misery on other countries.

Pakistan-- not exactly an ally; scared into cooperation by Bush's ballsiness.

Saudi Arabia-- who the heck knows. I'm still trying to figure out why Norm Mineta still has a job. Bush has the right idea overall, but he sure baffles me on some issues. Maybe just a convenience thing: the tendency toward democracy in the middle east (Iraq, Lebanon, and soon Iran) will reach Soddy Arabia soon, so don't alienate them in the short term?

1.  Turkey is not an Arab country or culture, it is Turkish. The history of the turkish people is different than that of the arabs.
2.  Modern Turkey was created by a group of men who were committed to modernizing Turkey and to making it Western oriented.  Part of that plan was to secularize the society and it has largely worked.  That is, it has tried to separate mosque and state.
3.  Another factor in Turkey's case is it's long interaction with western european countries and culture. Egypt and Lebanon are two arab countries with similar histories.  As a result, Turkey is more open to the West.
4.  Despite it's "official" laws and policies, life in Turkey for a non-muslim is not on an equal status.  If you practice your christianity or other religion publicly, you will receive much resistance.  If you are a Turk and convert to christianity and publicly profess your faith, you're days are numbered.
5.  BTW, the same group that threw off the old Ottoman empire and created modern Turkey tried to annihilate the Kurds and Armenians.  Turkish history and culture is full of violence and intolerance based on race and religion.

... in response to Some points about Turkey:, posted by surfscum on Jul 8, 2005

in addition to their disgusting habits of engaging in homosexual activity with young boys and camels some additional points about Arabs to consider:

there are many Africans, filipinos, Pakistanis, and Indians who are muslim as well yet not radical like many of the Arab sects.  Unfortunately radical Islam is spreading somewhat to these countries as well.

1.  Arabs originated the sub-Saharan African slave trade centuries before Europeans.  The "culture" and infrastructure of the slave trade was well established by the greedy Arabs.

2.  Arabs are killing Christians in the Sudan.

3.  the Spaniards have known for centuries that Arabs are incorrigible.  places like "Matamoros" (kill the Moors) are testament to that deep mistrust.
