My girlfriend Beatriz is upset because her 75 year old  mother  got mugged this morning. She went to a bank in El Centro to pick up her pension money,I guess its about 200,000 pesos.I guess its the only place she can get the money. Two guys with guns robbed her and another woman. They not only took her mothers purse but knew enough to take the money belt she was wearing when the didn't find the money in her purse. She was crying but is OK.She also lost her Cedula,Social Security type card and other papers.
Beatriz and her sisters were mad at the mother for not taking their brother with her. They told her to,but she didn't.BUT,I told Beatriz if the guys had guns its a good thing Juan Carlos was not there. He could have fought with them and got shot.
Mama let a guy talk her in to opening the front door a couple of weeks ago.He only stole a telephone and the TV remote and split. They were all mad at her,DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR UNLESS YOU KNOW THE PERSON MAMA.
ROBBED HER RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BANK.NO COPS AROUND.ITS NOT THE US HERE AT ALL.

Seems to be a common thread here. People getting jumped just when they are loaded with cash. I think a number of bank employees work on commision for the thugs.

Pete, you've been there over a year now with no problems. I hope you're not getting lax in your security.

Pete,

Please tell Beatriz I am sorry about her mother's situation.  I know that must be very upsetting.  Maybe she can handle her business in some different manner than what she has been used to.  I am no expert, but I am told that thieves will often watch their targets patterns, and then wait for them at some inopportune time.  So, I know it's not much comfort now, but maybe Beatriz's Mom can change her route, or her schedule in some way.  Take care.

Pete,

Give Beatriz my best.  She's a hell of great gal and her mom does not deserve this shit.

Pete,

I am sorry to hear about the robbery but I am glad your GF's mother is fine. I think we forget how lucky we have it in North Amercia sometimes. Yes we have crime here also and I am going to be very careful when I visit Colombia.

I am counting down the days to my fiance's consular interview in the DR on July 11th.  Last Friday my fiance was nearly mugged by 4 FEMALES!  They knocked her down as she was getting on the bus and tried to remove the cell phone from her belt and to take her purse.  As she fell forward she put her purse in front of her and she fell on it which basically protected it.  They were concentrating on taking her cell phone which was inside her jacket but clipped on her belt.  I bought her that phone for her birthday its a very nice phone.  Not wise to have it on her belt.  They couldn't get it off before some riders intervened.  Had they taken her purse they would have had most of her jewelry her engagement ring (that I am still paying for) and about a weeks pay.  Close call!   Who was it who asked me about her safety last week?   I need my fiance HERE!  Wow!  28 days!!!!

Glad to hear that she is alright.  I dont hear that much about crime in the DR.  Many times as I have been there I have never  felt unsafe.  Just goes to show that crime can be anywhere.  I am not a fearful person, but I do apply common sense.

I wanted to ask you. How did you meet your girlfriend?

I met her on amigos.com in June 2003.  I was going through a very messy divorce/child custody battle with my ex when I bumped into THIS site planet-love.com and clicked on amigos.com after reading here a few weeks. Best move I ever made!  You can check out our latest photos at http://www.picturetrail.com/bjsisko

I don't think it's wise that she's walking around with so many valuables.  Cell phone clipped to the belt is a no-no even in North America, if you live in a big city and take transit.  Especially since it's a nice cell, she should put it on vibrate so it doesn't attract attention and carry it in an inner jacket pocket.  Plus, why is she carrying her jewellery and engagement ring around? Next month, she'll be free to wear whatever she wants in public.

All VERY good questions!  She carries her cell phone everywhere. This is for her safety.  She usually does keep it on vibrate when she is in the street.  Why it was on her belt on Friday is the question of the day.  When I say all of her jewelry, I meant all of the jewelry she was wearing that day (necklace, watch, chains etc).  All goes in her bag when in the street.  As far as her ring, she wears it in the office, but not in the street.  I am probably more guilty here of pushing this idea.  Mostly so all of the barracudas in her office knew she was "hands off" (Like it matters to THEM anyway --- jajaja).  Maybe not so smart.  Time to re-evaluate all of this.  Seriously though, when it comes down to this, HER safety is paramount.  These things can be eventually replaced.  My fiance can not be.  This could have been MUCH worse.
