"someone tells you it will cost you $5000 to $10,000 from start to finish I think thats way too high." – Bogota Jim

Bogota Jim, I was that someone. With all due respect, i would love to hear from someone who did it from start to finish for less than $5K. The plane tickets alone can add up. Then you have English lessons, money home to mama, maybe warm weather clothes, etc etc. Come on Jim - I have done it and spent a lot more than $5K - and did not even get married. The ring alone was probably half that – I did not go with the Cracker Jacks model. But that is another post - "I should have opened a Jewelry Store"

10K
That is about the real number . You can spend more , but 10K will get you several trips and some extras.

A nice Ring. Screw that, if you pay more then 100 bucks for one, well you do not understand how these women think at all.I have never talked to a woman that thought a diamond was important. They would rather have a designer type ring and also most i asked about a diamnond said it would be to dangerous to wear one in public. Only HMAW really care about the value of an expensive ring

I offered my wife a choice of a diamond engagement ring or scuba gear.  She went for the scuba gear.

I think I probably spent $15k in the entire process (not including the scuba gear), but that was in 1994-1997 dollars.

Hate Mongering American Women, or was it a typo & you meant

MHAW for Man Hating American Women......just asking :-)

P.S I received a mild cursing out for spending too much on a ring. I used the Jewelry industry propaganda formula...you know, two month salary!
Only I used the average monthly Colombian salary, as a substitute.

KB, I spent a lot more that $100 on the ring - but it was with a woman from Cali that i was living with in the US for a considerable time. My second ring (novia) that was about the price. The third was around $1 mil pesos - i was in San Andres and having a goodtime with her.  You also are forgetting clothes, medical, etc etc. 5-10K maybe to get to the K1/k3 but the money pit does not stop there. Anybody want to buy a watch??? jaja

Excluding cost you would have in the States for example (engagement/wedding ring) you are not likely to keep your cost under $5,000. There are exceptions to this but it is not the norm. If your budget is that tight out of necessity you will likely run into problems.

The sum of $20,000 for me is about what it has cost to fly down to Lima Peru to be with my novia and now fiancee five times in 2004.

I started this venture in 2002. If I were to add up all cost since I started...it would have to be in the $40,000 category.

Am I complaining about all the money spent?  Nope!!  I learned alot and started to treat my trips as vacations (not wife hunts)....I had a blast and dated easily over 200 women from different agencies in Cali, Bogota and Lima during that two years before meeting my fiancee. As a rookie in 2002, I also put all my eggs in one basket my first trip to Cali in 2002 and nothing panned out. After that trip, My attidude was if I found someone along the way on future trips...GREAT!!If not...no big deal because this was a VACATION!!. I finally did find the right one in December of 2003 in Lima Peru.

I am very happy to have found the right one.....AND I had a great time on vacation in South America for two years before finding her as well!!!

Good Luck to all newbies on your "future South America Vacations"

I started searching in 1999.  I read this thread and shuddered at how much I have spent on this quest during that time.  Agency/address fees, plane tickets, telephone bills, "helping" ladies out, restaurant meals, the ring, etc.  I think I am in the range of 2/3 of a year's salary.  WOW!

Hey pete , I could not agree more .... especially if you make several tirps to really make sure this is one you want to marry . I am in to almost 3 years and she is still in Brazil ... with the ring , hotel , 3 trips ect... ... I have spent aleast 10,000 ... Jim , in Bogata .. you are great guy and have met you about 6 years ago but this time ... however I did introduce a guy to a latina in a hotel and they are now married and did it for less 2500 ... But that was pure luck .... first trip down there , first lady he met , she was not a member of agency ect ...
