29 members of the ELN turned themselves in to Government troops yesterday. The ELN is the second largest group of anti-government fighters in Colombia.

The 29 belonged to the most important and most symbolic front of the ELN, "Héroes de Anori". "Héroes de Anori" are the founders of the ELN.  Two of the founders, the brothers Manuel and Antonio Vásquez Castaño, were killed in 1973 in one of worst battles ever fought between Government troops and the ELN.

Since Uribe became President 12,000 fighters have turned in their weapons.

The reason why the front "Héroes de Anori" decided to give up (according to the leaders) ....
1. They no longer feel motivated. And
2. Since Uribe took over, the Colombian troops are motivated and are kicking ass!

4 MORE YEARS!!!!

Frank,
I have been called a hopeless optomist but I think there is  a good chance the rebel issue will be gone in about 5 years if Uribe gets his second term.If these guys know the Government is VERY SERIOIUS about getting rid of them it makes it too risky for alot of them to continue.
I also think the government needs to cut some amnesty deals and just let the leaders go free.Even if they had been involved in drugs. The US is getting in the way insisting on extradition and prosecution. The important thing is to get it over with, not retribution.Just let them cut and run.
Issues of crime and corruption, which also need to be delt with at the same  time, will be more difficult. They need to keep working on qa first class honest policeforce and they got a long way to go,lots of tradition of extra dinero on the side here.
