CaliJames,

I am a little rusty on the dates, but I think that what you said is essentially correct. I was not talking about the compilation or cannonization of the Bible, as we know it.  I was referring to the teachings of Jesus and His disciples. As you know, those disciples became known as the Apostles, and they were the leaders of the First Century Church.  It is true that the actual writings came well after Jesus' death and resurrection.  But, the doctrinal teaches that were taught, first orally, and then written are quite different than many of the teachings and distortions that have been put forth since that time.  Many of them you mentioned yourself.  So, even though you are Catholic and I am Protestant, I would say we agree on many of the points discussed in this thread.  Without trying to sound too preachy; I think we should remember one of Christ's most famous quotes. He said:  "I am the way, the truth and the life.  No man comes to the Father but by Me".
It's not politically correct for today's world, but it's still the truth!

Some of the early Popes had wives.Seems that its  partially an economic decision,if they don't have a family we can pay them less and work them more. But if your recruitment doesn't work any more maybe that needs  to get reconsidered.
On the other hand, maybe its easier to just switch rather than waiting for them to change. They have no exclusive franchise with god as they would have you belive.
For me personally, the last time I attended  the Catholic Church other than a funeral I was 21 years old,it was Easter Sunday. The priest got up and talked politics, and we were not on the same wave length at all.
Adios MF's.

Pete,

"Maybe we should change instead of waiting for them to change".  I think I have your quote fairly close.  Anyway, that was basically  the thinking of Martin Luther when he nailed the 95 theses on the Catholic Church door back in 1495, or whenever. Anyway, that was the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.  Some people try to change an organization from within, and others figure they are the ones who need to change, or make the move.  Since I am Protestant, then you know where I stand on the issue.  But, the main thing is for any person  to "come to the foot of the Cross". The name on the door is not nearly as important as having a personal relationship with the Lord.
I realize that to some people, going to church is simply a ritual and can be very boring.   But, that was not God's intention. I believe that the local church where we attend should be a place of worship. We all have problems and needs in our lives.  Many of us on this board have known the pain of divorce.  I certainly have.  So, life is not perfect, and neither are we.  That is why we should serve the Lord. Because He alone is perfect.  No one Christian denomination has the corner on the market.  But, the emphasis should be on worship and to follow Christ; not some man made dogma or creed.
