Auntie wants money
« on: November 02, 2024, 08:15:22 AM »
whenever my wife visits the Philippines she gets hit up by all of her aunts for cash.

she said the minimum amount she can give each of them is p1000.

they don't bother me & i find it hard to spend most of the money in my pocket while there.

so my question is does this happen to your wife while in the P.I.?

Glad to see you are still happily married.  This site has died from lack of participation.   I check it every few weeks just to see if any of the old posters are still hanging around.  You post is the only one I have seen in months.

Guys!!--Piglett!!!--was that a link to family pics? Didn't load! Betchya the 'kids' are a lot bigger than the atomic chickens y'all had before. Your wife adjusted? Got the snow plow ready???

I just asked my wife and she said "no"--there's no obligatory (expected) money expected by the aunties 'ates'--nothing like that and basically none given. No pecking order.

Guess we're lucky we haven't gotten hammered by the infamous 'You're from the USA--you MUST be rich" folks. There's a ton of tales there.

My Mother in law lives alone in a remote barangay & manages the land that raised 8 kids--all now working overseas. There are about 8 people that help her with planting and cropping--the physical work. We (her, my wife & me) will for Christmas give them gifts of foods, T shirts and such. Additionally, we hire single gal to stay with my Mother in law most days/overnights--we chip in for that caretaker and cover tuition for her daughter as a bonus.

Non extravagant gifts are given to nieces and nephews. Helping them w/ future tuition so that they get good jobs is likely one day. With siblings, we help them financially get moved to and established jobs overseas. Independence all around. To be honest, I never really kept close track of my wife's pay/spending and that's for almost 20 years now--the last 6 (thankfully) her working from home. She has always been financially generous-- my life is so much better in so many ways because of her.

I guess I pretended not to notice what/where she was spending and helping out her family until we bought our home (in both our names) in 2020 and only then our financials were all laid out--our finances 'commingled.' When she bought a house in Davao City previously, I did give her a few grand, not even asking if she opted to put it in both our names. (she did) But even on the modest income I made up to retiring, I didn't (don't) wanna worry about money--my 1st insecure Filipina wife did (she was an orphan) and money matters were so difficult, stressful. I now know my wife gives to the church, other charities here (& the occasional local street bums*%#*) and to at least a couple students we don't even know in Philippines and it doesn't bug me at all. I even asked her to sign me up to help a couple students. W/o being stupid, seems the more you give, the more we seem to get. Weird.

But this time around, our mindset has always been "Teach em how to fish, don't just keep sending fish" When we fly there, most of our luggage weight is still chocolate, some clothes etc--of course we come bearing gifts. It's so much fun opening our bags when we get home!

But when I die (and she is a very well preserved 24 years younger)  it's sort of expected that she'll go back home and they'll take care of her. Filipino Social Security. I can't see my two sons from my 1st marriage doing that. Sad--but different cultures. Now, a sister in law and her 2 kids stay in the home my wife worked to buy over ten years ago. We go there, we get the master bedroom. Social animals we are.

My wife is a great American success story.  We live on a lovely wildlife reserve island with 30 miles of nature trails, but twenty minutes from Savannah GA--a 1700's--1800's historic city that bring 17 million tourists a year and has all that 'city' stuff & oozes charm. We've got the ocean, blah, blah--most folk's would say it's a pretty choice place--even permanent vacation. So it still amazes me that even though I'll leave her forever financially comfortable here, that she wants to live out life without me among the people and place she really loves. Sure, the Philippines seems sad to many people, perhaps even third world, but my wife finds it simply much more comfortable.

Sometimes you can take the Pinay out of the Philippines, but you can't take the Philippines out of the Pinay!

my daughter is 10 and spending the school year in Guam with her aunt lisa who is a teacher at a

 private Catholic school there.

My son is living with his grandparents in the province for now.

Aunt Lisa her husband who is in the American coast guard, my wife and myself pooled our money and

built a new 2 story 5 bedroom 4 bath house where my inlaws house once stood.

i will be going back there in January & with a little luck will be able to oversee the finishing touches

 needed.

my wife works at the local nursing home for the county so once she gets old (she is only 41) she will

 always have a monthly check.

i'm working as a truck driver between New Hampshire New Jersey and i have invested in an internet

startup in the province.  the local government installed fiber cable to the nearest school which is just

down the street from the family compound.

my business partner who is engaged to my wife's little sister went to school for IT.

he is running the show & i will either be very happy with him the next time i see him or

he will break our contract and we will never speak again. time will tell :)

our house in the states will be paid off at the end of this month

i still have a few years left to work so i plan on continuing to fatten up my roth IRA so i'm not one of

those old broke retired dudes that try to live on pennies in the Philippines.

All that is so awesome!! Instead of waiting for life to happen, you're making the life you want happen. Beautiful family, journey etc. It's inspirational!!
