Three Dead in Shopping Center Shootings in Cali This Morning
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:45:33 AM »
A lawyer who'd just left the Bodytech gym in Chipichape and entered the hair salon next to it was shot and killed there about 11:30 am, a half hour before I arrived on the second floor for lunch.  Turns out there was another shooting minutes later at Palmeto Plaza where two people were shot dead. No word yet as to whether the two shooting were related. Readers may recall there was another shooting in Chipichape in October of 2012.

I remember.  It would be interesting to learn the motivations / reasoning.

There is high "chance" of bad things happening in Colombia, that is for sure.   But even the bad guys usually require some motivation for this type of activity

Zon don't know the motives or what happened at Palmeto Plaza but the Chipichape shooting certainly looks like a "hit".

The fact that it looks like a hit gives me no comfort at all. Someone could take a contract out on you for the most trivial of reasons. In addition, it is easy to get caught in the cross fire.

On top of all that, how did the perpetrators exit without getting shot by security or caught on CCTV and hunted down by police?
- That was a retorical question in case you didn't realise.

The point is that Cali is not safe.
How is it going to become an international city will stuff like this happening in public malls?

Probably defending someone who is going to use against the person who hired the shooters

You should tell that to Mayors of Major Cities in America... They are considered First World, World Class Cities, yet while violent crime is down overall, mass shootings have actually increased.

I don't understand this overt concern with violence in Latin America. Maybe your Lilly White suburbs don't have daily occurrences of contract killing, gang shootings and other acts of gun violence but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen elsewhere.

I should mention that White collar crime which cost communities much more money happen more often in Lilly White areas.

My point is all crime cost a community, don't just focus on gun related crimes. That's a scare tactic.

Why never mind, let's have it.

Rick Scott is a Governor of Florida and Corporate Criminal, was CEO of United Health when it was convicted of Medi-care Fraud and he was forced out, paid $9.8 Million and now is Governor? How does this sh*t even possible?

Street Crime in America is about 1/3rd of Corporate/Crony Capitalism Crimes (on a cost basis) yet most focus on crimes than happen in minority dominated rural areas and urban areas.

 That's called a distraction.

I lived in Simi Valley, CA for over a decade. Look it up its 90+% White and Middle Class. While gun violence was rare, cases of sexual abuse, spousal abuse, destruction of private property and thief are regular occurrences.  They are on par with national averages. I personally witness several instances of "Midnight Auto" perpetrated by White teenagers, my classmates. The biggest drug dealer I ever knew wasn't Black, Latino, Arab or Asian, he was a very unassuming White guy.

He spent most of his "earnings" making his cars faster, nothing flashy. Never got caught, not even a minor dime bag infraction.

Crime is equal opportunity, but much of US resources are invested in over-policing communities of color.

This why threads/post like this are ridiculous and pointless. Noriega is dead, but the DEA is very active in Colombia because illegal drug demand is HIGHER THAN EVER.

Americans love to engage in fear mongering, maybe that's why horror movies made such a roaring comeback...

Dude you're veering WAY OFF TOPIC.  The thread is about a shooting in Cali Colmbia, that's it.  It's just a report for people who might be in that city, doing whatever.

The moral of the story is, when in colombia watch who you associate with, who you do business with, who's novia you're messing with, and just generally watch yo ass!!

Twice in colombia I saw people getting beaten right in front of cops and the cops just stood there and watched.  I hear that's why people are generally nice and polite down there because if someone gets offended or pissed off at you there's nothing stopping him from coming and just shooting you in the head.  It's just the way things are done there.

Well, I don't get your bitchin. The thread was about an assassination, and you want to gripe about white people and their vile white collar crimes as though it's their fault minorities would do drugs and commit violent crimes?  That's old propaganda.

My feeling is that it is not a 'white'problem...the people at the top are often white in this country, but if you go around the world, the top people are all sorts of ethnicity and they are also guilty of their versions of white collar crime.

i do see a point here though, as those white collar criminals in this country should be prosecuted and sentenced to real jail time too, but their money and/or trickery often buys them out of it.

hmmm, but what is the other option?  to let people commit violent crimes against each other?  I would think that the law abiding people in çommunities of color would be happy to have a strong presence of police, it seems often a complaint is that police don't do enough.   I don't know, but want to hear more of your perspective.

I agree, people of color know how to categorize people not by socioeconomics but by other clues...

I wouldn't say its off-topic. It only seem so because the majority of threads and post on this forum are about Colombia. What I am saying is, I don't find Europeans and other from non-Anglo societies posting about violence in a developing country, its just a fact of life no need to mention it.

The fact that you have to be wary of your Novia just speaks to the lack of Street smarts and I'm going to say it, by the Caucasians that go to Colombia and that post on this board. This is why many view bride tours as the safest option.

My other point is that just because bride tours come into Colombia left and right, things haven't changed that much in its major cities.

In fact I take issue with the cleansing of the drug war from the cities and having it fought mostly around the children of Afro-Colombians and Indigenous population in the south.

As I said Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks are constantly two of the safest cities in America. The secret however that nobody talks about is that many of the LA County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol and LAPD calls these cities and the Conejo Valley home. Not to mention many employees of LA City and LA County, my father worked for Sanitation while we lived there.

@Fathertime, I agree with your post, I just have one other thing to say about communities of color.

Police Depts, especially LAPD and Oakland PD have had to have Federal Mandates telling them to engage in COMMUNITY POLICING, not terrorizing these communities. Don't assume that its lawless, its not and residents often have to ban together to make parks and other public areas safe for children and protect them from gang activities.

When Chris Dorner was on the loose, the media would have you think his statements were the incoherent ramblings of disgruntled employee. The media and public relationships firms often engage in the public prosecution of individuals that threaten the status quo. The Black Community knows better and what he said was true, the LAPD terrorizes communities of color, that is fact and can't be disputed. The Christopher Commission setup after the Rodney King Riots found this to be TRUE as well, don't bury your head in the sand and yell nananana like racism isn't a problem in America.

So when I say that US resources are mostly spent on the over-policing of communities of color, I am basing that on facts, not emotion. Other sources of oppression are NDAA, the TSA and Homeland Security in general. When Kelly Thomas (who's White) got the sh*t beat out of him by White cops in Orange County, coupled with the fact that Greedy Bankers are attacking other Greed/Wealth Americans (MF Global Collapse, HSBC dealing with drug money), the whole dam system is corrupt and the reset button needs to be pushed, plus a dialog on what Capitalism IS and MEANS needs to happen.

The system encourages this kind of behavior from EVERYBODY.

It is not good to hear about shootings right were I was at in the past... that is for damn sure.
But yes the fact that this is probably a contract shooting does not mean you should brush this off at all. Gringo chasing the local girls isn't going to piss anyone off?
Retiring in Tela, Honduras is 14,600 days (haha)

To be honest a lot of cities in the USA feel unsafe to me.
That said, some facts may be useful.
In 2011 Cali was ranked 11th in terms of number of homacides of all cities in the world.
That does not include countries offically at war.
The worst US city was New Orleans, placed at 21.

The top 33 cities were all in the Americas. So perhaps this is why this is a topic for discussion in Latin American circles.

Mosul in Iraq was 44.

Of the Colombian cities here is how they were ranked:
Cali - 11th
Medellin 14th
Cucta 23rd
Pereira 35th
Baranquilla 42nd.

In 2011 there were about 5 murders a day in Cali!

I like Cali, but one should not be under illusions.
How this relates to accountants cooking the books and women making false allegations to win custody disputes in a leafy suburb in the USA I don't understand.

vman, i thought you were an Australian ...did you live here in the USA for a while or something, if not what do you mean by FEEL unsafe, maybe you are you getting your info. from TV or second hand sources?

regardless, a lot of the cities in the USA are not that safe, doesn't even have to be cities actually...just certain neighborhoods are best to just keep moving, take care of business, no lingering...but i've always assumed that is how it is everywhere (as in USA and all the other countries)..  how about in Australia?

Oh yeah absolutely! Any reasonable sized city anywhere in the world is like that. Get drunk and stumble down a dark alley is not a smart move anywhere. The big issue for a traveller is not knowing where the bad areas are.

Nah I don't even watch TV. I mean when visiting the USA. It is only a FEELING I get sometimes. I have never had anything seriously dangerous happen to me in in the USA.  I don't mean to suggest it IS especially dangerous. In fact I posted the statistics to show a little perspective.

Well what's going on in Cali right now is a war between the Rastrojo gang and the Urabeño gang. The Rastrojos are in an increasingly desparate struggle to keep the Urabeños from taking over. Many if not most of the gang members on both sides are demobilized paramilitarie. These gangs are what is referred to as "bacrim" (bandas criminales). In Chipichape a lawyer for a Rastrojo was targeted. Unfortunately an innocent hair dresser standing near by was killed as well. The shooter was caught just outside the fence. Like so many of the hired killers in Cali now he was seventeen. In other words too young to be prosicuted as an adult.  Many of these assasin kids are sent to a holding area at Valle de Lili near Jardin Plaza in the south of Cali. They are usually freed in under a year, that is if they don't escape first which is very common.
