House Hunters International
« on: July 05, 2012, 09:30:54 PM »
On HGTV - an episode of House Hunters International has a couple from Jacksonville FL moving to Cali.  The Mountain area of Cali would be a better description.  It is running at 1:30 am - you can set your DVR or Tevo if you are interested.

It seemed a little lame but Beautiful scenery.  But HGTV is a little lame anyway.

The hills outside Cali are wonderful spots with a very nice climate. However I would also worry about security. There are a lot of police patrols in these areas but if people knew where you lived........ :-\

There was a board member that lives in DAPA....not sure what happened to him as I haven't seen him post in a while.
He has lived in DAPA for years and I'm sure he could enlighten us on what live is like there....I have been there a few times...only minutes outside of Cali.

The show started off with the couple looking in Dapa but the lot size was not large enough for the husband, 1-2 acres.  So he had the Realtor find him 4 acres even further away from Cali.  Yes, I was thinking all those things.  It's kind of neat watching natural selection work.

The husband was a Cali born guy but moved to Jacksonville FL in high school about 20-25 years ago.  His wife was Irish-American red hair and so white she was clear, she kept asking him things like how do you say hat in Spanish.  O - and he had not been back once since his school days.

He seemed really arrogant when the Realtor tried to advise him (the realtor was a cute Colombiana named Joanna???) and he came off as arrogant in general.  He keep raising his voice at the Realtor demanding "bigger - bigger" lot and house.  They (the couple) were working with a $150,000 US dollar budget.  I am not sure but I don't call $150k house budget a reason to yell "bigger-bigger" at ones Realtor.

I do wonder if any thing will happen to them.  I do wish them well.  But it seemed like a recipe for disaster.

As the film crew filmed them in their new back yard, which is right next to the jungle.  I felt really nervous for them.  Like they were...Bait.

The biggest concern I have is that House Hunters International owed their viewing community a disclaimer. There are plenty of dumb Americans that get all their bright ideas from watching shows from House Hunters to Dr. Phil. People watch a show and decide oooh I want to retire there or get a vacation condo there. But as noted the reality is that doing something like this dumb couple did is beyond dangerous.
Retiring in Tela, Honduras is 14,600 days (haha)

You can actually get to DAPA in about ten minutes from the city limits of Cali....the guy the board member that I know that lives there has about a 30 minute commute to Cali so he is well off the beaten path and has lived there for many years.....he has never said he was concerned for his safety that I know of.

Didn't get to see this episode, but I did see one with 2 guys from Canada, moving to Medellin. Of course they chose the Penthouse to impress the ladies :o . I've read that the episodes are staged with buyers being selected "after/while" they've already made their choice. HGTV throws in a couple a choices just to build up the anticipation for the viewing audience. I once had my own reservations about living outside of Cali.....until I visited Pance  ;D
