Very sad. That crap reminds me of when the tourism in Juarez dried up years ago. My stepfather crosses the border there 6 days week, and my mother worries herself sick hoping she won't see news footage of him hanging from a street light.

I just read the 2 comments from that article. Looks like it's common, and nobody is doing anything about it.

This guy was a "monger" "tour guide" that I think went by the name "medellin paisa".  He would charge gringos to guide them to the brothels and hookers and I'm reading that he was a cocaine addict, so he was probably hooking gringos up with the nose powder too.

Word is a woman shot him 4 times while he eating at a restaurant.  The way I see it, you mess around with that kind of lifestyle here in the USA, you're putting your life in danger.  You get mixed up with that crap in COLOMBIA!?!?  Man, you're just asking for it.

But then again...geez that shooting in Seattle yesterday killed 5 or 6 people for no reason....

Noah Goldberg aka "medellin paisa" was very well known among the "monger" crowd in Medellin.  Alot of the guys commenting say he was a real nice guy.  May he rest in peace.

Like the Colombianos themselves? No gringo tourist could ever hope to match the average Colombiano when it comes to mongering. And why not? At least Colombians are up front about sex unlike idiot Americans.

Hola dtibbet!
My novia is thinking we could spend Christmas near Puerto Lopeez. Is that area safe for a white blue eyed gringo? I speak Spanish (badly), I'll be with 20 Colombians and I'm low key but one look at me as I step off the bus and the entire area will know there is a gringo in town by night fall. Is that a good idea in that area?

hola VMAN, I haven't been to puerto lopez. but i spoke with my fiance and her mom this morning. OK here goes.... you want the long or short story lol. i ask them to go to puerto lopez  esta fin de semana. they said no. es peligroso para mi. porque.... that part of meta has many guerillas.  if your there with 20 Colombians then OK . get in there visit and get out.  this info is coming from my finance and her mom. so use your own judgment and use normal precautions. after hearing what they say, i myself  am not going there esta fin de semana:)

p.s. i look like a gringo too. you can see me from a mile away lol.

Thank you very much.
Yes I want the long story but you've answered my question already.

If we went, then the 20+ (out of town) Colombians and myself would be there for a week or so. I expect we would be mostly hanging out at the same place every day, eating, talking, dancing and drinking. In other words, I imagine the whole town would know exactly when and where they could find me.

I questioned my novia about this place. She said that under the previous President it would have been safe but under the current President she didn't know. She said perhaps they should be looking somewhere else. She is going to talk to the others about it. The idea that I would join them is a new development and I guess it is going to limit their options a bit.

I think that your fiance and her mother are much more up with the current state of affairs in that area than my novia. Colombians don't like to say anything negative about their country so when one tells me it's not safe, I pay attention.

..exactly!!!

They all talked about it and the new plan is to go somewhere completely different. I guess that basically confirms the advice you got about the area around Puerto Lopeez.
