New to the site looking to head somewhere soon for 4-8 weeks

Hey whats up everyone, i stumbled across this site today when doing a google search on medellin and cali.
So far loving the site and all the great resources and info its providing.


I am an intermediate spanish speaker (whatever that means lol) i used to be conversational but school and now work has kept me a little busier than i like. I went to Guatemala (antigua) for 4 weeks and stayed with a family and studied spanish like 6 hours 5 days a week with a one on one maestra. It was awesome experience. The host family was super nice, and the grandchildren in the house were all around my age (18-30). I ended up going out with them most nights to hit the small town, and even accidentally hooked up with one of the grand daughters... a couple of times, oops.


Anyways, i work in the medical field currently doing traveling jobs for about 8-13 weeks and just finished my most recent assignment. I'm 28 years old and honestly, have been looking to settle down for the last few years. I want to travel somewhere for 4-8 weeks. Live there, study at a local language school, and meet some awesome people.


my number one goal is to go somewhere safe, after that it is to learn spanish and then lastly it would be to meet and make connections with locals. Not looking for any prepagos, just other intelligent, kind good hearted people (and hopefully they are attractive women


I currently live in las vegas, i've lived throughout california as well but AW just seem to annoy me more than anything. By that i mean overly-materialistic, wanting to party until there in there late 20's etc..


Sorry for the long winded post. But any suggestions on to some awesome cities to go to learn spanish and meet quality women potentially looking for something long term?

Pereira/Dosquebradas, Colombia. Much cheaper than Medellin or Bogota, awesome night life, and an abundance of beautiful women. Also a four hour or less bus ride to Cali, Manizales, Armenia (REALLY BEAUTIFUL WOMEN THERE), Tulua, Palmira, Neiva, and Cartago.

Welcome to the site cross, that's an interesting avatar you have there, are they your relatives? perhaps if you share more of what you are looking for in a woman you can get better suggestions (both look and personality wise), there are very experienced users on this forum that have traveled to the places you are interested in so I am sure you will get plenty of answers, best of luck

They are European white there and in Uruguay. But you might be right. In Argentina they descend mainly from Italians and Spanishes, so they may be less pale than Americans, even if to my eyes they are all "American white".

Given those choices I'd take Argentina every time. It's far more off the beaten path than Costa Rica or Colombia. You seem to stress the term "safe." also. I'd say it's far safer than Colombia, as well. Can't comment on Costa Rica though. On the positive side, you won't have a lot of interest in you because you're the rich gringo. On the negative side, you won't have a lot of interest interest in you because you're the rich gringo.


As has been repeated frequently here, it's all about the culture you are looking for, so choose wisely as it can make the difference between heaven and hell.

Yes, olive colored skin is more so someone who is just not pasty  . But you're right i have never been there. my only experience with the looks of the women there come from the internet (i.e. myspace, Facebook, hot or not) but i do have two friends from argentina and they both have a spanish/italian look to them. olive colored skin and dark hair.

Personality is very hard to describe i believe, and i am still trying to determine these things myself. But i'll try...
I am always seeking for self improvement in all aspects of life, so i would want someone who is motivated and constantly looking for ways to better improve themselves, whether it be learning a new sport, or reading classic literature.


I would like someone who is positive, bubbly, always smiling and enjoys life. Someone who can adapt to new situations without always needing me to help guide her. I don't mind half the time but i don't want someone who needs my help with everything...like earlier people said i don't want to marry a girl to end up treating her like a daughter.


Kind hearted, caring and compassionate person. Education is important but intelligence trumps book learning IMO.

Im not really too familiar with any of the cultures. I know california and west coast US culture, mexican culture and guatemalan culture oh and also filipino culture. I work with a ton of filipino nurses. I've known quite a few russians as well. I get along well with people from all walks of life and i can adapt to most people/cultures/situations. However, i do understand that cultures becomes much much more important when in a relationship. But truthfully i still feel like my clay hasn't completely dried so i can still be molded to adapt to any culture most appeals to me.

What I meant was that being a gringo is a bigger carrot in Colombia than Argentina, so Colombian women will be interested in you just because you're a gringo. This means serious women as well as interesadas (those interested in what you can do for them.) In Argentina, you're less like to be appealing just because you are a gringo. At least that's my take on it.

You want to go to Medellin and yet you hate "overly materialistic, wanting to party until there in there late 20's etc". Dude, you're barking up the wrong tree. The paisas are as materialistic as they get - in fact they remind me of Jews - but then again, I love Jewish girls and I love the paisas. As for skin color, Medellin may be the "whitest" city in Colombia but then again it is Colombia and you can find all types. My wife thinks she's a white girl.

Have you traveled a bit to argentina? if so what cities would you recommend?

It's been many years so I suppose things have changed a lot. I was only in Buenos Aires. I hear great things about Patagonia, and  have a number of open invitations to come and stay with people - but I have no idea how it is for bride hunting, only outdoor activities.


Argentina (also Uruguay and Brazil) are much more international places then most of the rest of Latin America IMO. Most of the people in many of the other countries are only vaguely aware that there is anything outside of their borders. Not so the East Coast of SA. Kind of like the difference between Connecticut and Oklahoma, or San Diego and Denver.

Adriana has olive skin to me. I've been to Buenos Aires a couple of times and it's very very rare to see someone as dark as her around there. Don't know about the other cities, though.

Ask Benjio about the morenas with green/hazel eyes in Brazil. (You know where Adriana is from, right?)

With all the respect to your friend, it looks like you don't mind plastic, so yes definitively Venezuela for you!!... though you did use an example much darker than I would have expected, so probably Brazil.


I think it will be easy for you to find what you are looking for in Latin America they are very reasonable personality traits you are asking from a healthy/balanced woman however some of the more traditional ones or in smaller towns tend to be somewhat over protected and might fall into the category you wouldn't like, I would recommend bigger cities.


I've never been to Venezuela myself but it has a reputation here in Mexico that it is THE place to buy a pretty husband to your daughter, so while they might not show as much interest as in Colombia I am sure you would manage to find someone willing to leave their country, just make sure they are leaving their country for the right reasons (you)


Also I was just wondering, all those cultures you mentioned you are familiar with, is that the american version or fresh arrived out of their country version? there is a pretty big difference.

Surprisingly those are natural, it just goes to show you how far the evolution of the bra has come
No, i personally don't like fake boobs, if all else is equal, i'll take a naturally pretty girl to a fixed up and paid for pretty one any day. 


I know many many many fresh in the country, don't speak more than two words of english Mexicans and Guatemalans. I also have been to both countries and have met many people during my travels. My spanish does pay off when I'm with only gringos and I'm the only one who can speak the language


The advice on the big city is something ill probably utilize. I love the olive colored skin and hazel/green eyes. So maybe its time i learn some portuguese!

So while i am looking for a potential wife, i do realize that some things should not be forced. That being the case my first goal being; going to a country to take paid spanish lessons and improve my fluency...


any suggestions on countries and cities for that? or does it not really matter as i can find a hired tutor anywhere?


I would really like to go somewhere besides guatemala again, but its just so damn affordable (150 dollars a week for 25 hours of 1-1 spanish lessons, 3 cooked meals and a home stay with a local family.)


I don't mind bumping that number from 150 to around 300-400 if it means going to a more desirable (IMO) location.


Honestly, i'm open to wherever. I just want to go have fun, learn the language, be relatively safe, socialize with locals (prob do some volunteer at a local hospital clinic) and make some real genuine connections that may lead to something more serious in the future.

I don't think the guy ever mentioned going to venezuela, for some reason IV brought that up. Maybe because she never been there. I spent two nights on flight layovers and those wree the scariest moments in my life. And my passport is a green Mercosul one, not the blue.
I also remember feeling ugly next to all those beauty contest ready girls, but I've heard they, in general, don't have a very good personality.
And yes, Adriana Lima is from Brazil (like half of all time Victoria's Secret angels ). Woody is was just being funny, Aconcepts!

Safe?  Depends on your definition of what "safe" really means......your luck can run out when you least expect it in Colombia, I would not call Medellin safe by any means, especially with recent events.  I guess it will depend on how much risk you find acceptable.  I for one have found the risk worth the reward! I'm heading back to Bogota again in three weeks!

I was in Venezuela in the late 70s on a business project. There was a British engineer onsite who was there on a business visa. His contract had gone south but he couldn't get an exit visa. He's been stuck there for 6 months - couldn't get out. Fortunately I had only a tourist visa and when I had completed what I had to do, after about 4 days, I just left without telling anyone onsite. That was pretty scary. It was one of those places you are happy to get out of. Everything else was very unremarkable to me at the time, including the women.
