DLV Excellent trip report. Thanks for taking the time. Those bugs are called jejen.  Agree they're awful. They're almost invisible like the nosee'ems in the Maine woods. Those taxis that wouldn't take you up the hill probobly ran on natural gas. It's half the price of gasoline but they have no power whatsoever to climb hills. Probobly just didn't want to embarrass themselves.

Thanks Jim,
Now that I know the name of those damn bugs, I'll do my best to avoid them in the future, I still can see all the bites on my arm almost three weeks later!  I think you are right in about half the cases where the driver refused to go further up the hill, but two of them told me flatly that they would not go any further up the hill as it was too dangerous for them.  But, it was my first time in Cali, so when it comes to this barrio, I'm a rank beginner.
thanks for the kind words

Gato,
I much prefer the weather in Medellin, much cooler for sleeping!  There are some beautiful areas near Cali, Dapa for one, lots of homes up there with beautiful views and great scenery. I'd love to buy a house there in the future!  From everything that I have heard about the heat and humidity in Barranquilla, I think I'll avoid it and stick with Cali, Medellin and Bogota.

It is true if you do not have an air condition for Cali.

Before thinking of buying a house in Cali, do think about mosquitos!!!  On my 2nd trip, I had 25 mosquitos bite in 5 days staying!!!  I was staying at CaliCharm house which has open air part of the living room area.  If I want to buy an apartment in Cali, I would need to choose an apartment in a high-rise building to avoid mosquitos!!!

Back to the IPAD question, you would have to be signed up to a cell phone contract, or ISP contract to use it?   Just like buying a laptop, pretty useless for internet, unless you have an ISP.
IPAD would just require a cellphone contract, which aren't cheap to including data transfer?

my ipad is wifi only, works with any wifi signal, so do not need to have separate ISP. I have yet to have a use for the 3g option in the states, as everywhere I travel for business has wifi.  If you wish to use the 3g service you just pay a one month fee for data and renew each month if you want to continue to use it. Most people I know just use it every once in awhile

Wow Dan you are going wild now, heading back so soon.  Hopefully you guys decide you are right for each other!   Give me a hint if that is the case though, maybe put that old lit streetlight avatar back up, and I'll know what it means!   :D

Hey FT,
Actually I've been going fairly often, have a direct flight from Dulles to Bogota and the price is not too bad if I buy in advance
