VM -

They are into it here.  It is "Day of Friendship and Love",  "Dia de Amistad y Amor" and is the third weekend in Sept. so the date floats.  They do not celebrate the Feb 14th Valentines day.

Yes Valentines Day in Colombia is very important but it is in Sept. like previously posted.

And yes you will have to celebrate it twice a year if you bring your Colombiana to  Australia. That is assuming that Valentines day in Australia is on Feb. 14th.   Don't forget! I have forgotten for the last 8 years so  therefore I am reminded each September that Colombian VALENTINES is coming up.

Yes I am aware of Dia de Amistad y Amor. I was refering to 14th Feb.
I have sent her some flowers now anyway.

I am a very romantic guy. However the 14th Feb has become so commercialised that it completely turns me off. Just a little pet peeve of mine.

Now I have 2 days a year to try and remember. I think I have set myself up to fail because I am hopeless with dates.

I would much rather just buy her some flowers every few months at random times, for no particular reason at all.

In general, Colombia does not celebrate on our valentine's day, but my girlfriend is expecting it on Tuesday.    You can send her flowers on your valentine's day no problems.  She will appreciate it.

Jajajaja!

I am actually very romantic. However it takes a Latina to draw that side out of me into it's full glory.

Just to elborate:

I had an Aussie girl friend last year. Just a casual thing but we got along well.
We were listening to some Latin music. She doesn't know a word of Spanish but she learnt some of the titles. She was telling me which ones she liked and quoting the titles. Then, without translating I told her how deeply romantic the lyrics to those songs were. She asked me if I would ever say things like that. I said; in Spanish definately. In English never.

Western women say they'd like all that romantic stuff. However they don't foster an environment that encourages it from a man. Mostly quite the opposite actually. I think that it is something western women don't really grasp.

Anyone who has a lady in BAQ area can check out the "gifts" section of www.latin-wife.com. You can get your girl an absolutely huge bouquet of flowers, complete with a small stuffed animal, chocolates, etc. for $85. They will deliver it and also take a few pics of your girl with the bouquet and email them to you.

I have done that a couple times in the past and everyone in the house and neighborhood was stunned when they saw them.

You're so right V_Man.  My ex wife was very uncomfortable with compliments, any kind of romantic gestures, celebrating anniversaries or Valentine's Day for instance in any kind of meaningful way.  It got so I just stopped doing much after a few years since she just didn't seem to like it.

I'd like to think I was always romantic, but I  find it easier to be romantic in Spanish ... the language and culture really support affection and romance, so it takes me out of me own cultural norms and makes it seem more natural ...

Don't you know it. I just spent an hour this morning with my latina and we are already making plans for next Valentines day. After a bit of explaining as to how it is such a big day here and not there she understood and got into 'spirit' of the occasion.  ;)

Ok since St. Valentine's day 2012 is now over. Did any of you or have any of you tried to write a very short poem to your latina lady? I tried to and it is dammed hard to tell you the truth.
But my trying to do so was so funny. I know it stunk but my latina did not criticize, or make a negative comment about it. She politely said 'gracias' of course and tried to change the subject which is unusual for her. She usually just lets me ramble on about one thing or another.  :D
I told her I was sorry that I could not send her a gift for Valentine's day this year and she said the nicest thing: "tu eres mi mejor regalo".  Now what are the chances of a mature western woman ever saying that? I would say slim to none.
Two chat session today lasting more that an hour each. Lots of plans made together and also lots of genuine, mushy romantic talk. And to think there's another Valentine-like holiday in September as well. What is not to like about latinas in Colombia? Oh, sure you can boast about how great Colombianas are on a scale measuring physical attractiveness, but their attractiveness once you really get to know one of them is their capacity for responding to genuine romance and affection because they give it back to you in spades.   ;)

Begin

I have never written more than 2 sentences when writing in a 'card'.   My novia is always happy for any of my gifts.  Yesterday she received bunch of roses, a teddy bear and a balloon saying "Happy Valentine's Day" (yes, in English!)
