Need apartment in BAQ later this month
« on: February 03, 2012, 09:52:28 AM »
Planning on taken a little trip around 17 - 21 this month to BAQ.  I have never been there, and don't know anybody in the city.  I hear accommodations might be tight because of Carnival  (spelling?)

I am sorry I cannot help you because I have never been to Barranquilla.  Maybe Whitey can help you.

I liked this place best out of the 3 places I stayed (1 hotel, 2 apartments):

Pretty tough to get a place in BAQ now ... triple the normal rate, if you can find one.

Sorry, I don't know anyone renting.  If we knew each other IRL, you could crash in "el cuarto del gringo" at my wife's parent's house ... ;)

Value 2 Persons: $ 100,000

Is that $100,000 for 2 persons?   Seems very valuable price for an apartment-hotel

First place I would check out is Hotel Atlantic Blue.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g297473-d1599905-Reviews-Atlantic_Blue_Hotel-Barranquilla_Atlantico_Department.html

Nice place I have used many times and it did not even gouge me very much the last time I stayed there at Carnaval. I think it was 135K COP without reservations which is a steal for Carnaval time. Usual price is around 85K COP I think.

Maybe they just gave me a good price because I used the place so much in the past, I don't know. Other places I inquired about during that time were around 400K COP. Or more. One place I had reservations at was like 350K and was so disgusting I would not have let my dog sleep there. I made the reservations because it was the only place my friend (who lives in BAQ) could find for me. I don't recall the name of the place but was super nasty. We ended up staying the night at a different hotel which cost like 600K COP for that night! I don't recall the name of that place either but it was a high rise place right in the thick of Carnaval territory. The furnishings and everything were nice but the room was about 1/2 the size of Atlantic Blue where we stayed the rest of our trip.

Is that $100,000 for 2 persons?   Seems very valuable price for an apartment-hotel

I just received an email from Hotel Atlantic Blue because I was curious to see the price for those dates. They indicated it would be 300K COP/night. Includes breakfast. I imagine if you had a local contact or if you were there in person you might be able to get them to come down a bit.

Gracias all.  I understand we have secured a house.  I imagine it will be a grown up version of Spring Break.

Hahaha ... sounds like fun ... wish I could make it for carnaval ... I've never been.  My wife is not a big fan, but one day ... one day.

I'd like to see the one in Rio too, but the wifey says no ... the costumes are too skimpy ...  :(

I thought you guys married to Latinas were "the man" and told your wives what you were going to do instead of asking them for permission.

I knew I was going to catch some flack from that one ... haha ... yes, I could just "be direct" and tell her we're going ... ;)

Australia--"Where men are men--and women are nervous"  ;D

Well, since we're going down the "Where men are...." road.....not to name any particular country  ::) but how about this one...."Where men are weird and sheep are afear'd".

Yeah the way I heard it was "...and the sheep are nervous" but I guess if you shift it to the north coast of Colombia you could say "...and the burras are nerveous."

My Colombiana reminds me every now and then that I'm a savage. I completely agree with her about that. I tell her that just under the surface I am definately a wild man from a long line of wild men. I tell her it's OK because my family have not been cannibals for 2 generations now.  :o When I used a napkin last week she was absolutely thrilled. She practically threw a party to celebrate the event.  ::)
It's a little running joke we have.

She seems to think that she can gradually civilise the Vman. I don't want to crush her optimism but I do remind her that she may not like living here with all the animals.  :o
