Men and hair styles during the ageing process
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:27:28 PM »
I just read a short article which I really tend to agree with regarding hair styles for men.
When men are young in their twenties they can get away with wearing long hair if they choose.

Once however a man hits his forties and fifties, long hair at this age really starts to look just down right creepy.

The only exception to the rule is if you’re an ageing rock star. Unless your Mick Jagger, Steve Tyler, or Rod Stewart it’s time for a much shorter look if your forty plus.

High and tight (military style) or very close cut or bald.

Makes an older man look more dignified and proper.

Just my opinion.

I started shaving my head about 4 years ago.  I love it!  Man, I don't have to worry about hat hair, I don't have to worry how my hair looks out of bed or off a 12 hour flight.

Now, I just have to worry about burning the knoggin!  I did that while in India and when it peeled I looked like something out of a horror movies. haha

I do look younger with the head shaved.  My receding hairline made me look older even with a short cut.

It depends.  You have to go with whatever strengths you have - from an appearance standpoint.  Good advise is to get advise.  Go to an expensive place and get a gay guys opinions (on dress too).  It is harder to stay in style after you have gone through the 80s; 90's' and so on.

I don't know what all the fuss is all about. If a woman is smart or if she is not superficial she is going to look far deeper than the length of a guy's hair. But there is something to be said for having shorter hair as one gets older.
I look at it this way. Your older, wiser, you don't want to go with the latest fad or be too self-absorbed. Keeping one's hair short (or bald FTM) says this to the public, "I've got more important things to be concerned about than how my hair looks.". And I would think that a very perceptive woman picks up on that. It's that old "Johnny Confidence" thing coming to the fore.
BTW, the "Johnny Confidence." phrase comes from the Cartoon Channel's parody show "Space Ghost Coast to Coast". Space Ghost addresses a blatantly over confident rock musician he is interviewing as "Johnny Confidence".    Hey I wonder if this is in Wikipedea?  :D

Some artistic and professorial types can get away with the longer hair when they are older and it can still look good.  The skullet is definitely never a good thing, though ... as Clint said ... "a man's got to know his own limitations!"

Allow me to make an observation that is: the only reason Steven Tyler can pull this off is because of who he is. If you saw him out and around town someplace as an unknown, you might be laughing your arse off, or at the very least mumbling to yourself, at some old geezer trying to look young and hip because he just can't cut the cord.

I saw something simliar the other day in a guitar store (of all places). An old washed up rocker walking around like it was the 80s. Sorry to say, it looked hideous to me.

Even a full head of hair doesn't mean you'll look good or act young.

We have a pretty big rock n roll star who lives not far away. He still sells out big venues. The guy still has a full head of long blonde hair, and as long as he sticks to the song set, he can still pull off a pretty good show--he gets a good band together almost every time to back him.

But for all the plastic surgeries he's had, he still looks really rough. For all the drugs he's done over the last 4 decades, he looks and acts like he needs his own air traffic controller to follow him around.

I think he's been married six times and in a moment of belated realization on his marital failures, he recently said in an interview "I'm starting to think it's me".

We see John Mellencamp  around and he's looking really old, but it sort of fits him in a Johnny cash, Merle Haggard kind of way--he never really went for the blonde haired, pretty boy glam look--he sort of looks like an human version of an old leather jacket. His girlfriend of late, Meg Ryan, looks very well preserved up close.

Keith Richards is living proof that you can pull off looking bad and still look good in spite of it, as well as live a life of wretched excess, still maintain relationships and actually still have your memory and wits about you. I've only seen him close up on stage under the bright lights, but it looks like he's got more wrinkles than a newlywed's bed sheets.

Hanging out in NY's Greenwich Village I used to see a lot of stars au naturale' --Iggy Pop and Lou Reed always looked old to me. David Bowie, who hung out with them, looked younger. Before he took off to living in SoHo, Robert DeNiro hung out a lot in the village and always looked older, pretty rough on the edges--I don't think he had any 'work' done to his face.

So generally speaking, having a full head of hair makes you look younger, but not always
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Funny timing!

In the never be afraid to try something new category ...   I added highlights to my hair yesterday.   Sure I felt a little uncomfortable sitting under the "grandma hairdryer" with aluminum foil.  In the end, it looks good.  I should have done it last year.

Zon,

Were your highlights done by the same gay/metrosexual guy who gives you fashion advice?  :)

Like I mentioned in my original post...aging rock stars are the only exception to the long hair rule.
Based on your picture and your  age Zon, with all due respect it may be time for a serious trim. :)

Come on, man .... it looks great:)  Besides, those touches of grey will be there when I am ready - in another 10 Flippin years HAHAHA  Seriously, if I could not pull it off, I wouldn't.  As it turns out, I got good hair to work with.  But, that is exactly my point.  I want to encourage guys to do what is best for them, to motivate them a little, try new things, in order to position themselves in the best possible light.

Look, I have many friends that wear the same cloths for 10 - 20 - 30 years.  Not because they WANT to, but because they do not know any better:)  Same with hair style.

Zon, if you got it, flaunt it!

My grandad died at 90 with all of his hair and it was still growing as he lay on the slab.  I went to the undertaker and gave him his last haircut, the last time I got to spend some time with him.

My dad is now 84 with all of his hair so I may get blessed, fingers crossed.

Gotcha!!

Roger that!!

BUTSTER = "his 40's , 50's or older and has long hair he definitely look creepy."

For some yes, for some no.  Everyone has different attributes ... you have to go with what you got.  If you are a gym rat, wear tight shirts.   If you got hair, let'r rip.  Pics below before highlights / after (letting myself open for [snip] I know)    But, again, I am just supporting trying new things and thinking outside the box.

BTW - when I was first divorced, I listened to some dumb girl and she gave me a shaved head.  I was just two big ears, and a big nose HAHAHA
