For the guys who are now married, in a serious relationship, or have been in the past, did you give your girl a laptop to use to enable communication between you or to study English or whatever?

For the new guys are you planning on doing so?

I have experienced a few girls who were using the laptop given to them by their gringo boyfriend to chat and try to hook up with other guys! And they were doing so even while in a committed relationship. One girl even was engaged and the guy in FL was doing the fiancee visa and everything. It happens with Colombian guys too. I know of 3 occasions where the Colombian guy bought a computer for his girl, the girls were obviously screwing around with other guys as evidenced by facebook pics, entries....and they eventually broke up with the boyfriend. So the guy who bought the computer lost a hunk of cash.

My wife, for whatever reason, I have trusted to give her the laptop and although she has not used the English software very much the way she was supposed to, we have been able to chat every night for hours and practice English like that. Also send documents, pics, etc. back and forth.

So there are definitely pros and cons.

I would love to trade the desktop systems I have here at the house, (building them is a hobby) for a laptop. But free WiFi in her neighborhood is nonexistent. $:-\$

A computer, and preferably a laptop is pretty much essential IMO for having a long distance relationship in today's world. I could not imagine developing and maintaining our relationship over these past 3 and a half years without it. A phone is ok, but you need to see the person, share your lives through Facebook, etc.

I know some guys are thinking (especially on the Asian side) that you can maintain a relationship by seeing the person once a year, sending cards and letters and photos ... that may have been true in the past but just will not work now. There is no way a young colombiana is going to have the patience for that (much less a middle aged gringo like me ... hahaha).

My wife has always had a computer that she bought together with her sister that they share. Ironically enough, her sister now has a Canadian boyfriend. I doubt I would start a relationship with someone who did not own their own computer, or have access to one in their own house. Internet cafes are not very practical, and full of bad influences, but more than that, I probably wouldn't date someone who didn't have a decent enough job to afford a computer (that's my personal criteria - there are tons of good women who don't have the money to buy one, but I'm probably not going to meet them).

Last night I went to the local electronics store become I'm thinking about buying a Kindle (actually a Kodo which is the Canadian equivalent - Kindles are not sold here although you can order from Amazon). I was amazed at how cheap a decent laptop is now - only $350! Maybe even cheaper in the US? So, they are not a big investment anymore. There are probably guys on this board that spend that much on phone calls in a couple months.

When my wife's computer broke down about a year and a half ago I was thinking to buy her a laptop. But before I could do it, she'd already run out with her sister and bought a new one within a couple days ... they can't live without one!

If a guy is worried that the laptop he gives his girlfriend is going to be used to hook up with other guys ... well, he's obviously with the wrong woman. I imagine it's not always easy early on in a new relationship to completely know someone's character. In my case I was fortunate, as I got to know my wife slowly for 9 months as friends before I even made my first trip.

My wife had a computer, thankfully. When we webcammed before we met she sometimes wore clothing that made me want to transmit myself through telephone lines to get in that room with her!

I think once a relationship has been firmly established, making a purchase such as a used or new laptop can be reasonable under some circumstances.

Well, if a girl wants to screw around not having a laptop will not stop her. She might borrow her friend's or sister's computer, or just go to an internet cafe.

Also, you don't even need to buy her a new laptop. You can get a decent used one for $100 on craigslist or backpage.

My wife had a computer and internet when we met.I never bought her a computer but I did upgrade some things in the one she had. I was also her tech support! hehehe!

I had considered buying a computer for other women I dated but I never did. This is one of those things you really have to view as a gamble, not an investment.If you break up odds are you can kiss the girl and computer goodbye! So don't put alot of money into it.

Yup, it doesn't matter if you provide the means for her to cheat or not, a girl with good morals will not be tempted, even one that had a bad record in past relationships would not be tempted if she truly cares about you.

In my opinion, buying a computer for her is beneficial because of a reason other than chatting with her -- you are able to see her habits if she is indeed engaging other guys. Hopefully this is not the case, but at least this will prevent you from pursuing a relationship destined to fail.

My wife's sister owns an internet cafe and my wife was the one who managed it when she was still in the PI. I did send her a HD cam with built in mic (after receiving she stopped using that big headset). I was (still am) her/their :geek squad" go to guy.

My novia has a computer at her house. I do not have any intention of buying her a laptop, it is not necessary. If it was necessary, I would not buy her a laptop while I am here and she is there.

Bama, I'm surprised you're even asking this question. And trust me, this is a compliment. I would never buy a girl, no matter how hot she is, a laptop. I also come from the school that she also needs to have some skin in this game. And if she is serious about finding a life partner using the Internet, online sites, etc., she has access to a computer and therefore, doesn't need me to buy her one so we can communicate better.

I also base this opinion on Glory taking the initiative to buy her own laptop once her and I started getting serious. She just automatically assumed she was going to need it and made it happen on her own. I had no idea she even bought one until I made my first visit to see her.

You can also take into account that computers are probably the biggest waste of money you could ever invest in (cough) because they are the fastest depreciating devices on the planet in terms of value. If you find you need to buy your novia a laptop, you'd be best asking a thousand or more questions. And if you feel like you have to do that, the relationship is definitely not worth it.

I think you need a way to communicate on a regular basis and a phone doesn't cut it - at least not for the price paid. In my case it was just email for the first three visits since I did not really think of it in terms of a long relationship. When things did change and get serious she bought her own - she returned home to her family, they have wireless internet and one computer but there is an 8 year old internet addict in the family and they were constantly fighting over the computer... so she went out and picked up a small laptop. When I visited next I went to where she bought it and wow they really pay a premium for electronics.

Anyway, HUGE difference when they have their own computer and internet access.. my phone bill dropped enough that I could have bought the computer in about three months...She can study english, research songs I find that I am unable to determine the singer, look at photos I send here.. Send me photos... and the video chats uff!

I got my girl a sub $300 Toshiba laptop from Best Buy. The reason I bought it was for the English software. I had it loaded with Rosetta Stone and another grammar based English software. I thought it was a great idea because I, and many other people I have known were able to learn another language very quickly with the use of the computer programs because you can study as much as you want, day or night.

Unfortunately, she did not really use the software that much. She is not a real computer person.

When I first bought it, she did not have internet in the house because I did not want her to be wasting her time on facebook or whatever. Not that I thought she would be chatting up other guys, but I know how Costenas usually are with staying on track for things like studying.

After my wife returned to Colombia and entered Colombo intensive English classes, I got the internet cable installed in the house because I wanted to chat with her every night for a couple hours so she could practice her English. Since I am on the West Coast, it was very difficult to do the study sessions with her at an earlier time of day. And by the time I could connect, the internet cafes near her house were ready to close.

If I was on the same time zone as her, I probably would not have bought her a computer if I had known she was not going to use it for the English software programs I bought for her.

When she came here to the States on the fiancee visa last year, I asked her to show me how she was doing with the English software, or with doing any written assignments on the computer. She virtually had nothing on the computer except for about 2,000 songs and thousands of our pictures.

Incidently with my ex from BAQ, I did pretty much the same thing....I bought her a cheaper laptop loaded with the software, and she learned pretty much perfect English just with that and writing letters every day in English. She did not take any classes at the U or anything. She had taken some private classes but did not do well, it was a complete waste of money. But with the computer, without the internet hookup in house, and with writing the letters she was great. She would write a long letter every day in English, put on the USB drive and then hook up at the internet cafe to send the letter. So it cost minimal to connect for 30 min or so each day. At that time I had unlimited Vonage, so we would talk for a couple hours each night to practice English.

After we broke up, she kept the computer of course, but because it was like $300, and I was with her for 2 years, it was not a big deal.

I guess what I have learned from these two women is that each person is different and may learn well with one method and not so well with others.

These points almost sound like a learn the language discussion rather than should I buy her a computer discussion. The Facebook and 2000+ MP3s, photos, etc. seem to be mere side-effects.

I guess I am lucky that Glory doesn't have a Facebook account and doesn't want one. She has sisters, nieces, nephews, and cousins who have accounts ... a couple of who I am friends with ... but I rarely go on there myself. Back to the language...

I'm not pressing her to learn Ingles right now. She's working long days 6 days a week and Sunday is her only day off. So I'm giving her some slack ... hopefully not to my detriment later on. We chat almost every night and we don't mind my really bad espanol. Now once, I decide to really get serious and get the visa process going, then her learning English will start to become a serious priority; and she knows it. But until then ... she has a nice laptop that works and most importantly, she bought it herself.

Kind of scared the write this because I have noticed that there are some guys that actually have a serious or exclusive relationship with a Latina eventhough they have spent little or no appreciable time together. But I bought my first Colombian wife a computer 12 years ago so I don't see a problem with it if you know what you are doing.

However I have recently spent quality time with a calena that had two laptops and a brand new blackberry all bought by her gringo boyfriend. So buyer beware.

Every other woman I had a serious relationship with already had a computer at home or lived in my apartment in Cali so obviously they were free to use the computers and whatever else was there.

For the wife hunters that can carry on a conversation in Spanish I would highly recommend talking your girl into getting high speed Internet in her home if she doesn't already have it and then getting a ooma device so she can call you any time and you her for next to nothing.
If you have a blackberry and you buy her one you can exchange pins and text each other a 100 times a day if you want for free.
If you have a poor little one buy her a kindle with free lifetime 3G and yes it works in Colombia and the newer ones have a web browser. You can't chat but she can send you emails to you everyday for the rest of her life or until it gets stolen. Jajaja

A national publication mentioned a few sites today for getting a bargain on laptops... Amazon.com, Newegg.com & Tigerdirect.com. I wouldn't buy used from Craig's List for fear of viruses.

Getting a laptop for the wife is on the to do list.

last trip in medellin at my friends apt while at a party.my friend who came with me was talking with one of the girls who came with some friends. three days later they were going out, mostly upstairs to the bedroom

There's a world of difference between guys who buy their "novias" tablets and multiple laptops, and guys like Alabamaboy who buy their fiances inexpensive laptops to facilitate communication and learning English.

Sounds like the chica with the tablet is basically a prepago, but getting paid in electonics. The guy is an idiot and deserves exactly what he is paying for. He's probably overcompensating for his own issues, so I don't feel sorry for him.

As far a the girl I was with...I don't think the laptops or the phone are where her boyfriend went wrong....he spends about two weeks with her every six months and the relationship has been going on for almost 2 years. She told me that she wished she could tell him it is over between them..... but the guy also pays her rent and she says that she needs the money so she can't. jajaja
No way a hot colombiana is going to wait that long for one guy....if you guys that can't spend a lot of time down in Colombia and still want a hot wife....you better learn to roll the dice quick and get married fast....no real sense in waiting because you are never really going to get to know them until you spend a lot of time with them...and no matter how sincere their intentions are at first you just can't expect a hot sexy chic to stay home and wait on you from months on end.....it's just not going to happen.

Bama, given what you've told me about your wife's living situation, I'm very surprised it hasn't been stolen. I'm sure she guards it with her life. My ex-girlfriend would not accept a computer because of this. In a poor Colombian household, things will magically disapear, even when everyone is at home...and no one ever knows where anything went. True. She never leaves the house with it and never is even on the front patio with it. She lives in a rough neighborhood for sure. They have bars on all the windows, they even have bars around the entire patio so it resembles a big bird cage! They did not have TV or Internet in the entire barrio for a week about 4 months ago because some guys came into town and somehow chopped up the main cables coming into the area and stole them, I guess for scrap metal or whatever. You have to watch your step everywhere you go there because people have stolen all the metal covers on the sidewalks where the water or gas meters are or something. It happens so much in BAQ area that a lot of the people in the richer areas have padlocks on them! There were even a bunch of outsider guys who came into town and stole everybody's Christmas lights! If I were them I would be forming some kind of militia or something to control the area, but nobody has any money for weapons or anything. For sure the police are not going to come into that area. I have not seen one there yet. As bad as it seems, I feel more comfortable and safe there than in a bad hood in the States.

I completely agree with this whole paragraph. Especially with Costenas and Calenas. I just cannot see them sitting around doing nothing all that time.
