Greetings
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:47:47 AM »
Hey good people! I've lurked here a bit, thought I should say hello..

I recently married a woman from Colombia (a few months back). I never had that as a goal but uff! She just did it for me, did not want to let that get away :)

I've made a few trips to Colombia but not an expert by any means - Medellin, Bogota, the last one was to Villavicenio. Beautiful country, great people..

Thanks for the replies...

I did not use an agency or a dating site.. Nothing against either - in this case just a chance meeting.. We met in a dance club while I was on vacation looking for... well.. women in dance clubs :)  Someone in our group pointed her out, we met, talked, and moved on steadily from there.. Lots of ups and downs in the beginning... mostly ups these days.

Hey Desmond! You have a unique perspective having met your woman the "old-fashioned" way hanging out in Colombia.

I am curious, was your wife ever a member of an agency or an online dating site? What is her opinion with those avenues of meeting women?
So let mercy come and wash away, what I've done

Old-fashioned way.. funny! :) The club was actually in Santiago. At the time I had never been to Colombia.

I don't think she is aware of the Agencies or only has a passing knowledge of them - we have never talked about it. Shes never used an online dating site - I had to set up her gmail account after losing patience watching her try to set it up on her own for 20 minutes. She did have some sort of face book type of account on a site (I don't remember the name) that she logged onto that showed here last login at over a year prior. She is very smart but not a heavy internet user.

She's improved her computer skills since then - she now has a laptop mostly for learning English and talking on google-chat webcam.

"any guy" heh! How do you know I'm not some super body builder with Christ-like charisma and 10 million dollars?  8)

My Spanish is not great - I know maybe 1200 words and have a basic grasp of the syntax. I can get by but I also have developed some mad charade skills to help communicating - it helps if you don't mind that they are laughing at you.. I study Spanish about an hour a day and when I am asked in Colombia how my Spanish is progressing I always answer the same "siempre mejor, nunca bueno". I hope to upgrade my self assessment to "decent" in the next year.

My answer to that (and every other question) is "Yo quiero Taco Bell".  If they don't understand my accent, I simply repeat it louder ...

Yeah, charade skills help. I think it helps with the ladies to not be so fluent.Being that cute foreign guy allows leeway in lack of skills with the ladies. It tugs at their female instincts to "mother" you. Although I didn't care much for when they would spit on a hanky and wipe my face off!!!! hehehe!!! Just kidding...

Yes a quick surface scan indicates "fat hillbilly" but look a tad deeper... he has that glint in his eye that hints to a certain undefinable something.. a sincere looks that says "diamond in the rough" and "take a chance on me" <que ABBA song>

If he can get his strut juuuust right he can walk the streets of Parqe Lleras on a Saturday night and have all the Piases, young and old, doing a double take, breathing in deep while bringing the tip of their index finger to their lips and whispering "Que Rico!". Another fine specimen of the beast we call Norte Americano.

... or roughly translated with all my Spanish skill: "Uff! Gringo Gordo!"
