Red Egg Party
« on: March 23, 2011, 09:27:44 PM »
My son turned 1 month old today and as such we celebrated a Chinese tradition which up to this point I was unfamiliar with. It is tradition that when a child reaches 1 month in age a birthday party of sorts is held. My in-laws cooked a huge dinner with many courses including a very special one specifically for the occassion - red dyed eggs.

After dinner my son was given 3 necklaces by his grandparents - the first with a jade charm, the second with a silver charm and the third with a gold charm. My in-laws then presented him with a red envelope filled with money. All in all he hauled in a pretty good booty just for turning 1 month old ;D

The celebration also marks the day when Chinese babies are traditionally given a name although my wife tells me that this is not very common these days. Babies in China still are not commonly named immediately after birth but rather several days or weeks afterward as the names are derived from specific Chinese characters which are determined by not only what day they are born but also by what time - these are derived from something which I would compare to a farmer's almanac of sorts. We had already given my son an English name at birth but today my father-in-law chose his Chinese name.

I really like experiencing all of these new traditions that I discovered since marrying my wife.

It's interesting, isn't it - finding out there are all sorts of ramifications for things you used to just do on a whim, or never thought of doing.

Congrats on the little one making the first month! That's the toughest part.

I found out what the necklaces are all about. The tradition of giving the baby necklaces started long ago when it was thought that evil spirits would sometimes steal infants. The necklaces were put on the baby in the hope that the evil spirits would take more interest in the charms than they would in the baby thereby leaving the baby alone. Of course no one in China still believes in this but it has morphed into a tradition that is still followed today.

Well, of you use it the right way, there's no drama. Only those you allow to see your page can see it or post anything. Only dumb kids and businesses befriend everyone and anyone who wants it. The rest of us use it to stay in touch with close friends and relatives, share pictures, and comments. There's far less drama there than on this forum, since here, few of us know each other, anyone can read it, and anyone who registers can post.

Oh by the way, I looked at your photobucket page and anyone can look at it, anyone can post any comments, and anyone can share your photos on facebook. By posting the link here, it is available to all billion internet users worldwide too.

Facebook itself would be orders of magnitude more secure.

Get on facebook and set your security/privacy as closed as you want. The settings might be hard to find (and purposely so) but they are there.
