Colombia's stock market suffers biggest one-day drop since 2001

BOGOTA (AP) - Colombia's leading stock index Thursday posted its biggest one-day decline since its creation in 2001 as investors jittery over a recent downturn in global emerging markets dumped shares.

Colombia's benchmark stock index fell 9.5 percent to 7,435.6 points, its lowest point since November 2005.

The decline was the largest one-day drop since the Colombian stock exchange was created in 2001 out of the merger of three different regional stock markets.

This week alone the index has lost 18 percent.

The previous record one-day fall occurred on May 22, when the index lost 6.9 percent.

I had a feeling the peso would devalue against the $ . This is important for guys planning trips to know, and a good way to stretch their money.

I was hopeing for 2800-1 but it might not get there?

WOW, wonder what the heck is going on? down 50% isn't just a correction, it's a crash!

Wonder if Real Estate prices are taking a hit also? Of course if they're selling in peso's the discount is already in somewhat.

I would be surprised if real estate would be next, most investors who are pulling out of the stock market are going to put their funds in something that they feel is the most secure and usually that is real estate, be it in colombia or abroad.  I do not think you are going to continue to see these new developments going up at break neck pace like you have in the past 3 years.  You will see a leveling off but prices will hold...

The Colombian stock market closes automaticly, by charter, whenever it drops 10% in one day. Any stock market investment  is pure gambling when the values are based on rumor and current events rather than the assets and production of the company. Fully 70% of the stock in Colombia is based on a large conglomerate of banks and factories in Medillen.

Real estate prices will not go down for quite a while even if this crises continues.Colombians are notorius for failing to cut their losses. It is a matter of pride.  I agree that the new projects we have been seeing will not continue as they were funded by tax grants and low interest bank loans. We will see how many builders have already spent the money rather than waiting for the last unit to be constructed and sold. This is where a ot of people are going to get screwed. I have recommended that others stay away from these projects since they started in Cartagena well over a year ago. My property is all in the old city,

Well Auntie Dog

The apt.s in Cabrero and in the adjaqcent areas are still low priced. They are not a value purchase and no one buys them except for extraneros who do not take a look at the beach on Sunday or the neighborhood at night. Half way between there and Crespo is one of the new projects but constrruction has not really started yet. If one wants to wait, there are still some opportunities in Getsemani but the property is starting to increase in cost there as well. I am sure you understand the three rules of real estate!! Location --  --. Condos are like tech stocks they keep making more and usually they are overpriced

Hola Mi Amigo,

looking for a house with a nice fence & wall to keep my German Shepards from attacking the niegbors. But still close enough to the beach for a stroll now & then. Maybe a fixer-upper, Any ideas?
