girlfriends family robbed tonight in medellin.
« on: November 27, 2010, 08:42:07 PM »
well, i know i say Medellin is a dangerous place sometimes, and  i hate to be so negative about the place, but tonight, my girlfriends family was robbed by 4 + guys on motos in Medellin.   her family  was at a  mall for Christmas shopping and  the guys  followed them to the car, waited until they got onto the street and blocked in the car and pointed the guns at them.

so now they are freaked out because they now have the addresses of family members and phone numbers.
so be careful down there, you never know what will happen.

I had two couples at my home for Thanksgiving from Medelln and they tell me that $$ that was coming into MDE from the Goverment is now flowing back out to places like Cali, Barranquilla and most assitance was with Protection, and citizens services so seems to be logical the street crime and robbery is picking back up in Medellin and slowing down in other cities

Cali and definitely Medellin still need it. never really heard of much happening in Barranquilla or other smaller cities.

my novia told me that a lot of military troops were  moved out of Medellin by the new president when he took over, so that may have something to do with a sharp increase in street violence and crime in medellin.

yep, very true,  i was thinking... even if i was there, and i was packing a gun ( yes, i know how to shoot  someone and not miss  ;)   )   would it have helped,........  probably not, . too many targets to hit with a 15 round clip and just isn't worth the risk of them getting a shot off when you have family in a confined space, meaning, sitting in a car, even if you use the car as a weapon.

better just to give them what they want and be thankful your still alive.

i guess I'll pass on going to Medellin then  ::), isn't this the 2ND robbery i think another member posted something about his girl & her daughter were robbed in their home. 2 members & 2 robbery's what are the chances?

I'll stick with Manila where the security guards carry shotguns & they do shoot robbers. :o

I am glad they are all unharmed, but if "motos" means motorcycles, how can you possibly use them to stop a car driving on the street?  Maybe I just do not understand the description of what occurred.  Were they blocked in by other traffic, or did the robbers on motorcycles use their bikes to block the car?

from  what i was told by an over nervous and freaked out gf, was they  came to a stop light, they surrounded the car, meaning  in front, back and sides, pointed the guns and told the driver to get out.

i don't know what the  motos were wearing as far as clothes, if they looked like cops or military or something else.

but hard to argue when somebodies got a gun pointed at your face and at your family.

There's no arguing or reasoning with those guys.  Your gf and her family did the right thing.  Give up your stuff right away, hope you don't get shot, and live to fight another day.

here is what she wote today about it. little more info.............

like I told you by text messages he and his wife, the baby and a guy who is employee where last sunday in El diamante mall, is more or less close the stadium, and they were looking things there for christmas. My uncle bought there a lot of  things there and he had a lot of cash on his pocket , cos in that mall nobody receive credit cards, just cash.

Then after bought a lot of things they were in the car and like la autopista street was closed because EPM is working for the christmas's light, my uncle took the aguacatala street, the zoo is in the aguacatala also the licors factory y when you were in the parade horse you took that way. So my uncle was driving and appeared 4 motorcycles, each one with 2 men, so that 8 thiefs , 2 motos left and 2 motos to the right, each thief with a gun. So my uncle of corse stop the car and the thiefs opened all the 4 doors y a gay told to my uncle that give to him his bag, watch, all the money y his bracelet, while other thief had a gun in the head of his wife  and took her watch, jewerly and bag y other thief was with the employee of my uncle who was carrying on the baby y a bag, well the bag of the baby, so his clothes, diapers etc and the employee said: "this is the baby's bag" but the thief said: "I dont car, I also want this want" of course cos was a tous bag jajajaj, and other thiefs was taking all the plastic bags with the things wich they bough in the mall, y when they took everything the thief who has the gun in the head of my aunt, tried to take away the key of the car and like he couldnt, she took it and gave it to the thief. They removed the key of course for nope be to follow.

We think that 1 thief saw them in the mall buying a lot of things and, sure a thief saw him and followed them all the time, and had enought time for call other thiefs or our other theory is the same owners of the stores after know that a guy was buying a lot of expensive things call the thiefs, cos amor amor is too strange 8 thiefs together.

They thought that is could be a kidnap and maybe take the maybe, cos 4 motos y 8 guys, oh my god, but look even they didnt stole the car, so that sound like if they were followed from the mall.

And guess what, also the sunday, creps and waffles here in llanogrande was stolen in the night, the thiefs appeared at 9 pm and took 4.500 bucks,

The bigger picture ...

1, Medellin is quickly becoming less safe despite the thousands of extra police that are being dispatched.

2, Colombia's foreign policy is drifting away from US and towards a broader world view (local trading partners and Asia)

3, As the head of FARC has been squeezed, the numbers of small FARC incidents are rising (some estimate 1000 Colombian solders and police are killed annually already)

4, The US State Department has recently published new and updated travel advisories.

Is this a country on the rise, and is it just continuing to waffle?

as kitboy1 and my gf noted, a lot of military and police  were moved out of Medellin to other areas of Colombia, so a lot less security in Medellin now than a few months ago. Remember Uribe was from Medellin, so when he was in office, he has a personal reason for having a lot of police and troops there, but now that he's gone, ( teaching at some university in USA) the new president isn't from Medellin, so he  moved a lot of cops and military out of the area, to other parts of the country, hence a big upswing in murders and crime in Medellin area.

but that's just my opinion  ;)
