Danger in Medellin
« on: November 11, 2010, 10:08:50 AM »
Last night 3 armed gunman entered my Fiance's house in an upscale area of Medellin put a gun to her head while her 10 year old daughter stood there in horror. Their take 2 Mannequin's and 2 house phones. The entire family was held at gunpoint. Can't get them here quick enough.

I find these types of incidents particularly cruel.   A woman and young daughter terrorized like that for a few tangibles.  It may be considered too harsh, but I wouldn’t mind personally putting bullets in the heads of people that are willing to do this type of thing.  If a person is willing to commit this type of act, it is not a stretch to say he would have killed your fiancée if she got scared and screamed or tried to make an aggressive move to protect her young daughter.
It appears the outcome in this case was not TOO bad, but it probably gives people thinking of moving to Colombia pause, and rightfully so.  I hear too many of these type stories to be entirely comfortable with the idea of moving to Colombia with a family to protect.

How soon before they arrive here in the USA?

yup i guess that's how things are in the 3RD world (sometimes here too)
last week Marily was sitting next to the driver while taking a jeepney ride to her review class.
they stopped at a red light & 2 bandits jumped in the back. they got the cash & cell phones from 2 ladies in the back & then left. this is not the 1ST time she has seen a hold-up. last year her & a friend were on a jeepney when a guy came aboard with a knife
after seeing the lady across from her hand the guy her phone & cash ,Marily & her friend both jumped out & walked the rest of the way.

I rather not give the exact location but the house is 4 stories over 5000 square feet in a very populated high strata, well lit area. They followed her father home who is elderly and pushed thier way through knocking him over. She has 5 football size large brothers who own a fleet of Taxi's who have thier entire fleet out scouting for information looking for payback I hope she leaves the area before this gets dangerous.

Fathertime!

I am thinking sometime in May depending upon the visa process. She has her own clothing, and Blue-Jean line that she is trying to bring here to the States which is adding some time because of the red-tape.

That is a long wait, considering you have already been waiting.  Why can't she just do what she has to do regarding the Blue-jean line while she is already here in the states?  I'd want to get her here asap for several reasons now!

wow

i am sorry to hear, i hope all is well now and everyone in her family thinks about there actions.... these things usually end bad when tempers flair and revenge takes over. i would talk to her family and try to reason with them so no one end up attending a funeral.....

best of luck to you your girls family

It's a shame but that's Colombia. My wife (along with every other Colombian) could narrate a long series of crime stories starting with her father's murder by members of Pablo Escobar's gang. So it goes.

Thanks Ray......Not a chance with them...they watch their sister like a hawk and their Father....what can I say....this is not like here were a full investigation takes place, more like dark alleys and backrooms. There a long established family with many contacts and alliances and endured the entire carnage in Medellin during the 80's. Apparently a government official from Bogota flew to their home today and  has 24 hour military guard stationed on the entire block.

sorry it happen, but it happens in Medellin  more than most people know, just most people never hear about it. Beginning of the year, a Venezuelan girl i know who moved from Caracas to Medellin  with her family , due to the Chavez mess going on, was  robbed by 3 men who got into their house. The 3  tied everyone up, ransacked the place, ruffed up the dad and got away with some cash, jewelry. I'm sure could have been much worse. if your in Medellin and somebody knows you have $$$, your a target, that's just life there.

Last week my wife's 2 brothers and mother were outside a clinic in Bogota when a woman walked up and started talking to them. Two men came up from behind and pulled knives. They took the brothers' backpacks and the mother's purse. One brother had his books from college in his bag and the other had his medication from his kidney transplant and some money in his.My mother in law had a little money in her purse but that was it.It's quite common to get robbed on the street in Bogota. You really have to be aware of what is going on around you.

sounds like downtown Medellin, girls are constantly targeted for cell phones, purses and money. i can count a ton of friends who have been robbed or mugged in downtown Medellin, and that in the day, at night, never go downtown.

wonder if they would have had mace, would have it helped your wife's brothers and mother?

Just never changed the year counter..... I've been around awhile, not many of us left Gato....I am old school Colombia. I was around when the Crystal Palace was the place to be, the mansion down in the South of Cali...Latin Love Net, Norm's agency, Latin Internet. Just to name a few. I knew Pete stayed at his place drank beer with him. Had many a good time. I feel sad for the people now who visit these agencies. For someone like me who witnessed them in all their glory it's pitiful to see what's available for men today.

I don't know if mace would have helped but my mother in law is getting in poor health and my brother in law that had the kidney transplant isn't really strong enough to fight back.I guess it is easier for them to give up what they have.

not even safe in a church in medellin.
http://laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=378289&CategoryId=12393

i know a lot of people in medellin who have had brothers, cousins, dads ect killed for whatever reason, owed $$$, drugs, fight over some girl, narcos, pissed off the wrong guy, you name it, it happens. Sometimes, they were just in the wrong place, at the wrong time and had nothing to do with the situation, just bad luck. Remember the disco killings a few months ago in Envigado, 5 or 7 people killed, and the shooters didnt even hit the entended target, just killed innocent bystandards who were sitting there.

sometimes, its just better to sit at home, watch a movie and have a glass of wine.

There was one instance where a couple of sicarios killed some people in a car stuck in traffic, realized that they had made a mistake (same or similar car) and then went to the right car where they killed their intended targets. My wife had a neighbor who lived in her building who was shot when the sicarios were shooting at their target and missed him hitting her neighbor instead. She described this as an "accident". I told her this kind of thing did not qualify as an accident!
