If you don't want to go that route, never mind buy a modern TV and run an HDMI cable from your computer to it to transfer the signal to a big screen, maybe you need to think like Bill Murray's character in 'Ground Hog Day' and be commando like resourceful and glom an internet signal for free.
Make sure it is a 3D TV with wifi built in and while you are at it also get a video game system, a karaoke system & a new laptop too.  ;D

As I recall,Woody described a method where with an old wok that somebody probably threw out and some baling wire, you angle the wok to the stars and get your own dish TV and run the wire back to your TV. Maybe that'll work and also prevent tensions about who gets to use the computer.
Don't give the piggy ideas - he may do just that.  ;D

See, I told you he wouldn't get it... LOL!

I know it's too late now piggy, but if you had asked, the government would have sent you 1 or 2 free vouchers good for $40 each toward a digital converter box for your TV. And the digital signal is much clearer!

You can probably buy a converter still in the box for around ten bucks if you look around.

Ray
the problem is the new digital signals don't travel as far as the old analog ones did.
(i'm just too far out into the sticks) so some days i would only get 1 or 2 channels , big waste of time IMHO.

Piglett,
I thought you were mooching internet for free through a neighbor.

I think I remember that your New England state's motto is "Live FREE or die" and you certainly seem to embody that thought! ;D ;)
i couldn't get the card that i got off from ebay to read the correct band ......i think it was K band or some such $hit
anyhow my internal card in my old laptop only picks up the 2 older bands. i can get a signal from my neighbor (sometimes) but not always.
so i said screw this whole mess , i stick with my Verizon card
I'm allowed 8GB a month & then it starts to add up quickly so most streaming is out for me rite now.

...................................................
Three armed felons crossed the U. S. Border and attempted to rob anoff duty El Paso police officer dressed in civilian clothes while hestood in front of a bank.
The plan was for two of them to grab his backpack and toss it to an accomplice on a stolen motorcycle.       However, the well prepared police officer shot all of them, killingtwo immediately.    The third was shot in both arms and bled to deathbefore The ambulance arrived.
This is how much the U. S. Taxpayer would have had to pay to prosecute these thugs:

Arrest and detention for 1 night =$6,000 Transportation for deportation back to Mexico the next day = $1,000       Air time for Obama to apologize in 30 min speech $25,007,000
What it actually cost:
Four .40 cal rounds = $1.00    Taxpayer savings = $25,006,999.00
They Picked The Wrong Man to Rob -
THE AVERAGE RESPONSE TIME FOR A 911 CALL IS 4 MINUTES...    THE AVERAGE RESPONSE TIME FOR A .40 S &W ROUND IS ABOUT 1225 FEET PER SECOND.

Regarding the riots in Syria....up to recently the Syrian army has been very loyal.  A few days ago, they had a big revolt and quite a few defectors came back and killed loyalist military members.  Assad had better keep a close eye and very tight reign on this sort of thing, because the protesters seem to be gaining a little more traction.  He does appear secure at the moment and has Russia/China/Iran on his side.

I love quoting myself! jaja

Today around 90 people killed in the syrian riots.  It seems that a band of the military defected and started opening fire on the loyal troops.  It does not seem that Assad is losing control of things.  This looks more likely than ever to be the real thing now.  Assad has already threatened to launch at Israel if there is intervention from the west.  Lets see how ugly this gets now.

Launch what?  The chemical and bio-weapon rockets he got from Saddam Hussein who got them out of the country before the foreign inspectors or invading U.S. Army arrived in Iraq?  Think about it.   ;)

Assad has seen this coming for a long time and is well prepared to 'handle it'. Unlike Libya, his military is still by and large, a disciplined, loyal and effective tool for him. With elections coming and Syria's 'reputation' (for what it's worth) as a US ally, do you think we're going to do anything?

Or do you think the French, with their love of liberty,  are going to storm in and help the common man there?
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Hi Bob,

I've thought about it and I would imagine they would launch whatever they could and that would be enough to start a whole lot of trouble.   I think you were implying something with your post but I'm not sure what.

If I were Assad, I would not let myself go down the way quaddafi went down.  The precedent has been set now. Either you fight like hell to maintain power or you get dragged to death by the mob and/or US airstrikes.

they went to Syria in 2000/2001
i listened to an interview on satellite radio a few years back
the Iraqi general in charge of the operation said that in 2000 there was an earthquake in Syria. Iraq said publicly that they would be glad to send relief supplies. infact they sent a $hit load of WMD's. the general said they used 2 large aircraft & a small fleet of what he called "heavy trucks"

here is the big kicker .....this same general has testified in front of the US congress TWICE so don't tell me they have no idea where WMD's went , they know EXACTLY where they went & EXACTLY how they got there.

Now basically Hilary has said that "Assad must go"....this will be interesting in the upcoming months.  It looks like the Middle East is a giant powder keg with the fuse already lit now...These Syrian riots may wind up drawing a few countries in to defend there positions.....I saw in Egypt today the riots are living hundreds injured....

I just caught a short video with "Cornell West"...he is asserting that the 'Riots' will come from the poor when their welfare type services are cut off.   I agree with him on that point, the riots will come from the lower classes....I will say this, before we start cutting welfare type services, we should damn well remove a large portion of the illegal aliens that are draining hospitals, prisons, and schools.  I will not support cutting welfare services until something is done with the illegals.  I personally am ok with the recent comments made by Gingrich, if they were actually implemented the way he described it

It looks like Ol' Newt is pretty high up in the polls now. I figured he was hanging back so the others would tear each other down along with the press.I don't know if he can win but I have noticed in the past that elections are usually won pretty close to voting time. He seems pretty knowledgeable but no one really stands out in my opinion.

Well I don't know if Newt is electable... i can go with what he says on most issues and give him support...the think is, he has a bad reputation among the poorer and if he wins i think we will see a lot of riots at some point.

No doubt Newt is a smart guy. He has been around the game long enough to know how to play. As far as who would make the best President is a hard call to make. I was sure we were doomed when Obama was elected. I hope that election is the last of the popularity contests and the next President is elected on the issues. As messed up as things are I have been surprised at how well Obama has done but considering I thought Obama would have done much, much worse to begin with I didn't expect much from him to begin with.

There really isn't a candidate out there that really "gets it" as far as I'm concerned. I wonder how bad things are gonna have to get before everyone wakes up and realizes how serious our problems are. The fact that fake arse Mitt Romney still is fairly popular makes me believe we may have another popularity contest next election time. That flip flopper goes which ever way the wind blows  which means no one knows what he would do if elected. If Mitt gets the nomination might as well vote for Obama because they are cut from the same cloth.

Hehe buddy well I'm not a big Mitt Romney fan either.  I'm noticing a lot of conservatives are really ragging on Gingrich, but hey we gotta bring somebody to the table and I think Gingrich is fairly reasonable and he does have many of the ideals I am on board with.

It appears the Occupy movement is done for the winter so the chance of large riots has gone down until the spring comes along.  We shall see what the country's mood is in about 5 months.

The polls show that Obozo has lost most of the independent type voters...If something doesn't change dramatically in the next 11 months, it would be amazing if he pulled out the victory.  One way he could is if the republicans come into the elections divided or with a 3rd party candidate running...either of those things are still possible.

I read there was quite a little fracas today in NY with some Occupy protesters...still a far cry from riots.

Or do you think the French, with their love of liberty,  are going to storm in and help the common man there?

well robertangle it would appear the syrian military has held up to this point, although there have been quite a few defections.    some say that these riots are going to turn into a full scale civil war.. One thing though about your post.  You mention that Syria has been an ally of the US, what makes you say that?  I don't recall them being our ally.  I don't think the USA should be interfering with this conflict within syria.  It isn't our job to be actively help rebels from these nations.  They wind up hating us in the end anyway, look at the crap that is happening in Afghanistan now, american troops getting killed because of the koran books getting burned.

i understand that they were using the korans to write notes in (against islamic law) & then pass them to other terrorists in the jail. so after finding out all of this they were ordered destroyed....what is the problem???
