My son just started taking violin lessons, and his stated goal is to fiddle in a bluegrass band!  ;D

Check this out with your son. This is a group of High School kids from Saline MI. They have played for Presidents and other dignitaries. Ive seen them three times at various Bluegrass festivals.

Also look for Sierra Hull on Youtube. There are videos of her playing with Alison Krause and others at the ripe old age of nine.

My ex wife was so 'into' our first son leaning to play the violin, using the then popular "Suzuki method" that she couldn't be persuaded that to develop more of a musical 'ear' and lend itself to learning other instruments, the piano might be a better choice.

He seemed more of a 'piano type' kid, I figured, He hated the violin and it went nowhere.

Today he has played lead guitar onstage with bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Boys Like Girls and some emo bands I thankfully forgot,--uh Weezer was one-- but who are emomillionaires...He plays drums and jazz bass too--all left handed.

I wish he could take out the trash, left or right handed...

My other son started out on piano, didn't like it, moved to the saxophone  and after I finally-- after three years, got him a slot to play the drums that he said he always wanted, he decided to stay with the sax and the ripe old age of 13, is up for an audition with the state honor band, is already in the district honors band and plays with the elite jazz band.

I would turn them onto old blues, jazz, blue grass, country western (Gram Parsons) a lot of soul, rhythm and blues and classic as well as  obscure rock n roll.

They would almost always say "Dad--that's the WORST music I have ever heard!!

Then later, I'd find out they had gone on line and ripped whole catalogs of the very artists they dissed in my face for their Mp3 players.

I think on the top ten of their playlists, they both have Ray Charles "What I Say", along with Greenday (Dookie) Pink Floyd "Wish you were Here" and another surprising golden oldie--Bach's in there too...I never played them any Bach except when they were babies.

My older son's come to appreciate Bob Dylan (Blonde on Blonde, Nashville Sky Line, etc, but unless it's a well kept secret, they still think Neil Young's music (or voice anyway)  was intended to keep cats away.

I'd figured if they could listen and appreciate Dylan's voice, Young's would sound almost smoooth....I think Neil Young's work--while spottier than a fat leopard in terms of catalog quality, has some incredibly gifted songs in there.

Some standard Bluegrass jokes:

The hardest part of learning to play the fiddle is that while you're starting out, you just can't get far enough away from yourself.

How can you tell if the stage is level?
The banjo picker drools from both sides of his mouth.

Whats the difference between a large pizza and a banjo picker?
A large pizza can feed a family of five.

Whats the difference between a mandolin picker and a dead skunk in the road?
Theres skid marks in front of the skunk.

What do you say to a fiddle player in a 3 piece suit?
Will the defendant please rise.

Bluegrass humor, I love it :D

I really don't have anything out there. We were a group of friends that sat around and jammed on Sundays in Carl's wood stove heated garage and now and again got together and jammed for a group of people. It was always a pick up session with no set list at all. It was well what ya want to play next? How about XXXXX? What key? And then play.. We did play at an annual Halloween barn dance at Jimmy's but that was the only real stage performances that we did. We had all played in bands in the past and none of us needed a second job. Thats what being in a real band becomes. We would just get together and pick because it was fun and thats how we kept it. If I ever do get anything posted I'll paste a link here.

Zulu,

Aww--comeon--she's a Filipina! Heard of "Charice"?? And anything soft and mushy-- Air Supply, The Carpenters, Simon and Garfunkle, Little River Band, Earth Wind and Fire, Al Green--stuff recorded before she was born, that are still staples on Philippine radio stations.

She likes some rock too--like Chicago and Bon Jovi (but not the Beatles very much.)  Since that Filipino guy became lead singer with Journey, she's a fan there. She loves Lionel Richie and I am often amazed at how while we never --or rarely, watch music videos or play lists, she knows all the latest songs and dramas from Beyonce, Rianna and more. And the same with country songs--bands and singers.

I don't know where she somehow catches onto to newer music of all types,  as the radio staitons here suck and she knows a lot of soft, smooth 'old school' soul and easy listening stuff too. maybe it's during the hours she spends ironing, while I am scouting for pre colombian indian artifacts (just scored a 12,000 year old, near perfect primo Clovis point worth big bucks) I think everyone moves to songs like Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and sings along to some of James Taylor's tunes--"How Sweet it is".....

I turned her on to some old Temptations,  Spinners--even the Drifters, and Inkspots, etc--she really loves "It was just my imagination"--that song epitomizes 'smooth' and Smokey Robinson--what can you say there....

She loves to sing Beyonce and Rianna's (to me) silly ass songs--like 'Umbrella' and that one about putting a ring on her finger--I need to turn the volume up on the shower spigot, man.

I must admit it still gets me hard though when she gets out of the shower and sings and dances (gyrates) to "Don't cha wish ur girlfriend was HOT like me"--but I'm the only one who ever gets to see my 'Ms. Modesty' do that show stopper. ;D

Zulu

Well partly the fact that that was in Michigan back then and I live in Georgia now. I just found a Saturday jam close enough to get to two weeks ago. So right this minute I'm solo. Maybe in the near future I'll hook up with some folks that just want to sit around and pick. If I do I'll see what I can do to get a video up.
