Consumer Affairs article.
« on: September 02, 2010, 08:07:19 PM »
p://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/08/love_abroad.html

Above is a link to an article at Consumer Affairs.com entitled:Disappointment Awaits Men Seeking Foreign Brides Online. Below is part of the article that is called:Asking for trouble.

The article reads:

Many Americans who marry foreign wives do end up getting scammed, cheated or abandoned once her visa comes through but they’ve usually invited trouble on themselves.

After years of loneliness they often step right off the plane into a bar in Bangkok and start dating the first girl who approaches them. Or else they choose a woman half their age who fulfills all their fantasies but who doesn’t speak English and who sees them only as a walking wallet.

Finding love abroad is mostly about common sense. For a start, you’re unlikely to find the woman of your dreams in a bar with girls doing pole dances in the corner.

Whether in Colombia, Russia or Thailand, respectable women with serious intentions live normal lives and it takes time to get to know them. You need to be able to speak at least some of the same language and have something in common. And if you expect her to emigrate, you might first want to live for a while in her country to appreciate what kind of culture she comes from.

And if you get to know her first on an Internet dating site, remember that no one who’s honest will ever ask you to send money upfront. Period. And if the first couple of telephone calls go well, jump on a plane and go to meet her — if you discover she has a bad drinking habit and she can’t stand your body odor … well, at least you’ll have found out in time.

Finding love abroad can be thrilling. Hell, it’s one of the things that keeps me on the road all the time.

But while the average Vietnamese girl might be half the weight of her American counterpart, she may not be able to get your jokes and a festival like Christmas probably won’t mean anything to her. She may cook food you’re not used to and hate the weather but hey, at least you probably won’t be able to understand what your mother-in-law says.

And lastly, before you go running overseas to look for love, ask a female friend if there’s any way you could make yourself more attractive before you go. Terrible body odor, drinking before noon and an inability to listen are turn-offs to women anywhere you go.

Researcher,

I certainly don't agree or like everything you put out here, but hey, as long as we 'keep it in the ring' all (or pretty much all) is fair in here. I've got no designs on Braziliangirl, I just would've handled that most recent 'unpleasantness' differently than you, obviously.

And that consumer affairs article is about spot on--describing what can happen--what REALLY does happen to fools who don't take the time to 'do it right'. Hell--my wife never set foot in a bar, makes her own money and has her head screwed on right, but while she's not half my age, she's quite a bit younger than me and we'll see what five more years in America and as we get older, etc does for--or to us. We agreed repeatedly 7 or 8 years ago that we wouldn't have more kids, and that's a mighty tough thing for a filipina to live with, as she sees all her friends having babies and children are just a big part of their faith and culture

I can be rather cynical, yet romantic at times.

Anyway--I thought that link/info deserved saving in my favorites--thanks and I noted that the link leads to more useful stuff that a lot of guys here ought to read--so lads--have a look, if you choose to believe most of it (and we hope you do)--> gratis, Researcher.

I noted the link only works when you take away the P// and just enter :

Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Many men that choose this route just lack the common sense necessary to make these international relationships work for them.  In my opinion, those that have the common sense can score big, real big.  A discussion board like this one can be an ENORMOUS help for men if they can find it in time!

An international relationship is no different than if you had found your better half in the produce
section of the grocery store in that it takes a great deal of hard work to keep it healthy and on the
right track. Not as easy as it's portayed sometimes, but the rewards outweigh any reservations or
witch hunts from those that do not understand the whole thing. As I said in some other rant of mine
some time ago, it took a previous marriage / divorce for me to realize I needed to 'go to the library'.

The discussion board here holds an incredible amount of knowledge, but as in a library, you have to
actually go through the doors and be willing to add to your own knowledge (or lack of). The ones who
do this will have a much better chance for success, those who don't - won't.

Interesting article...

Are you implying my wife is bananas?  Okay, maybe she was nuts for marrying me, but I'm pleased as a peach she did.  She's a sweet little tomato, and together we are as cozy as two peas in a pod.

You are too much sometimes Bob! You do your best to keep things around here light and
funny, and I salute you for that. Too many long faces around here sometimes.  >:( :) >:(

I hope no one takes from my last rant that one would buy a wife in a grocery store. I meant
that it's just as possible to find your mate in the produce section at your store (1-3 miles from home)
or 5,000 miles away from your home. It's not where you find her, it's how to keep her for life.

But these articles pop up occasionally to spook some of the greenhorns that are on the fence
deciding if going abroad is for them or not. I know it was for me, and I have you down in the same column.

So now you try to make a fruit / vegetable recipe with this post!  :D

I think with an article like this you have to consider the source. This guy seems to be more of an observer than anything. So his opinions are limited pretty much to stereotypes that don't represent all that look abroad for marriage. He does however, present some great advice such as using common sense and taking a good look at oneself before starting.Of course the best info comes from those who have been there and done it, IMHO.

Like my cousin told me once after buying a 18 pack of balboa beer in Panama at 10:00 AM, only beer before 12 noon afterward whatever you want! ;D
