Anyway, sorry if it seems like I am hijacking your thread piglett.. The sending money over situation just really has a lot of correlations to my own situation (if my girl ever moves to the U.S., that is).  But it sounds like you are handling this really well.  Your wife is beautiful, congrats mate.

Hey no worries C J
after all this is not really my tread it's PL's thread & all of us are just adding our 2 cents worth from time to time. 8)

Oh also Dave do you intend to share any pictures with us. Come on dude I want to lay eyes on this building project you have going on there....... :) :D :)

piglett

Hey pig,

So far it is just two long block walls and a small wood guard hut...perhaps when things get more interesting. Oh well, the next time I am there I will take a picture of the wall. We have had an offer, so may sell the land before much else happens...I really want to be near the beach!

Hey pig,

Figure several years minimum before she is ready to work as an RN in the US. Before she can take the NCLEX, she will need a background check and CGFNS International Credentials Evaluation Service (Full Education Course-By-Course Report). 2 years seems to be the running average for CGFNS approval...if everything is in order.  As H said, she must be licensed in the Philippines first. The earliest she will probably be able to take the Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam is 6 months after graduation from nursing school.

When does she graduate? If too many years, it might be easier to put her into a US nursing program. It usually takes around 2.5 years to be eligible to take the NCLEX. She won't have a BSN...but so what, she can get that later if she wants . U.S. Community Colleges are about the most reasonable cost wise.

I think Vermont might be easier than New Hampshire...maybe she can work across the border.

She is not perfect (no one is) but she tries hard to make me happy.

Also the fact that everyday she had my breakfast ready at 7am on the dot & already had my laundry done from the previous day even before I was awake made figure out that she was a keeper. :D

piglett

Hey pig,

The laundry part sounds good, but breakfast at 7 AM? That wouldn't work for me!!! My breakfast would be cold by the time I finally rolled out of bed around 9 AM.  ;D

I am glad that it works for you!  ;D

I am now resigned to the fact that she will never - as in ever - get her nursing license.
Good Luck Man!

Keep the Faith!

H

Hi H,

Now hold your horses Hoss! (I always wanted to say that!) Just a thought...you know me always thinking way outside the box! What about checking into a community college RN program. Perhaps Gerlie would get credit for some of her previous classes. If not, the AS program is usually only 2-2.5 years, they offer flexible hours for working students, it would be a good review for her, and they teach the NCLEX before completion of the program, no Philippine Nursing Exam, and NO DAMN CGFNS BS! She already has her BSN which should count for hospital pay grades and positions.

I am not sure about MI, but she might want to also put "Hispanic" on her application to get a seat in the program.  ::)  A necessity in the Latin Pennisula -FL, when possible! For some reason "Asian" alone just doesn't seem to make a difference. On the state RN application forms it even has a category "Hispanic (non Filipino)," trying to cut Filipinas out of any possible gimme points.

Sell ? what ? is there a better piece of land that you have your eye on instead of this one? I think if I were to move to Sibuyan I would want to be up on a hill a ways but still have an ocean view. no point in loosing the new house when the 1st big storm hits.

I am 30 miles west of Maine & 2 hours or more from the Vermont state line.

Being up on the hill and overlooking the ocean has a number of advantages compared to being right on the beach. The Pacific ocean there is really salty, a lot more than the Atlantic along the USA coast. If you're on the beach there, expect things in your home, including expensive electronic items, to corode and for the sea air to have a lot of other harsh effects on other materials as well.

Nope - just warmer and more absolute humidity because of the heat:

Jeff,

If the salinity is the same, how come the Pacific waters seem to have so much more buoyancy compared to the Atlantic's?

Well it looks like I am going to have my hands full at least for a while.
Marily sure doesn't like to talk to me about money. Well at least not when it involves me sending it to her. There is a review class in Manila & it's only p16,500, i think that is for the entire class not just a month. So anyhow after cutting & pasting  Howard's entire post I get her to agree to go to a review class & i will pay for it( this was hard to do but i did it) Then i ask her how much she needs a month to live off of while she is not working. she says " i don't know" so then i ask how much for a week " i don't know" so then i say is p500 a week enough ? " sorry I can't answer that"

I loose it, unplug the cam & close down my laptop.

I know that i was able to float on my back with no problem while swimming in the province. Maybe it was due to all the rice & fish i was eating 3 times a day ;D :D ;D

When I asked my wife to marry me, she had already quit her job to be with me back in the Philippines and as said, I felt it only fair to support her while the paperwork to bring her to the states played out. We set up a bank account and she got an ATM card. She went through that cash quicker than we expected, but it wasn't like she was spending wildly.

Discussing money was always hard for her and I don't think that's uncommon. She didn't want to sound greedy--she really had a "whatever you can send honey'' kind of attitude, which didn't help me at all. I wanted a realistic explanation of costs and then I figured a sum for 'miscellaneous' things on top of what I could glean from her very unspecific accounting. I wanted her to be able to travel to see her family and do some special things with them and I knew it cost money to do that.

My now wife was pretty unrealistic about what she really ended up needing and her anxiety and reluctance to firmly and clearly talk about money certainly didn't help.

I think I probably sent her less each month than the average guy here ends up sending--or  what a guy 5-6 years ago probably sent his fiancee. Part of that was because we weren't really clear. That might be a problem for other guys too. Sometimes a Filipina out of pride, doesn't want to ask for too much, but ends up actually needing more.

In short, it became clear after a while that I needed to send more each month. She would go home more--(a three hour bus ride) and want to get a whole chicken, a kilo of tuna--stuff like that, for the family. She wanted to get school supplies and little treats for her younger siblings, who she'd be leaving. I was cool with that and there wasn't deceit. I would've been fine with her taking them to things like their first movie in a real movie theater, but she didn't even take it that far. But again, I ended up having to send more each month. Her having no work and having all that spare time instead of working 12 hours a day, six days a week, made spending money easier too. It wasn't huge amounts more each time, but a bit more almost every month and I can't really get upset. I'm glad she got to do some nice things with her family and they were pretty much things we take for granted here--not extravagances.

I think expenses ending up being more than what we expected and planned for is unfortunately more common than not, and most 'good girls' are going to feel awkward about talking about it.

Well i restarted the computer & signed back on to Ym & she is still there trying to figure out what happened. I go up one side of her & down the other.  ;D
I explain that things are now different. she is now married, probably can't get money from friends or family anymore (after all she married a kano so why would they need to give her money?) I think by the time it was all said & done she started to open up her eyes & see the light. But she can really be hard headed at times, I even told her so. 8) hey that's how i felt so that is what i told her. after a while she said that she thought p700 a week would be fine plus her costs for rent. So in other words $100 +/- & she is in good shape there. Man that was really hard info. to get out of her. For some reason she just can't understand why i want/need to know her costs there.

Marily & I always get along great EXCEPT when it comes to the big "M" money, then it's a totally different story.

I guess she is sort of like a wild mustang in some ways & it's up to me to tame her & get her used to having a bit in her mouth & a saddle on her back. he he he
that is sort of how i feel at times.  Piglett the wild mustang wrangler at your service. ::) :P Good thing i am thick skinned & strong willed or i mite be in real trouble.

I dunno why it seems different, maybe psyco somatic? Could be because the Pacific where you're more familiar with (the PI) has warmer water that you relax more in? I just do density calculations and know that there's little difference all over the world, but in the temperate coasts of the US, the Atlantic is more saline that the Pacific, and the east coast of Asia is particularly low while the Mediterranean is particularly high.

piglett

Hey pig,

There is always a better piece of land! We have had this lot for some time. It is near the mountains. I would really like a  lot near the sea...sea and mountains would be great! We have our eyes on a few areas, inculding Bohol. We probably wouldn't live in this city if not for family. Family (including extended family - Ninongs and Ninangs) can actually be quite important and helpful in the Philippines...especially when they hold influential positions in the police, military, and government. Friends in the right places can also be quite beneficial! Fortunately, we also have the same situation in Bohol.

Your location sounds very nice! If NH is tough on requirements, I would check with Maine.

It's still kind of odd and I'd bet that anyone who lives along the US Atlantic coast would venture that it is a lot easier to float in the ocean waters of the RP. Temperature & chemistry, I really don't know.

The ocean around where I live is pretty close to the Gulf Stream in temperature, in other words, is quite warm. I don't know for sure, but it seems pretty close in temperature here to what I've experienced in the southern Philippines. On the other hand, the saltiness in taste and the residue of salt left, just seems to be greater over there. I bet there are other variables in play here and 'chemistry' certainly allows for a lot of variability, of course....

Do you live near where a river dumps into the sea?  That could be creating a local low-salinity effect that is too small to show up on the pixels of Jeff's map where only large river effects are notable (such as the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Congo, & the St. Lawrence).

going off on a tangent here, of course...  :-\
