Congratulations! After you have had time to recover I would like to hear more details about how you met, the relationship, any obstacles that you had to overcome in the relationship and how you are handling things like the language issue.

Thanks for sharing!

alabamaboy,
We actually met on line at badoo. everything went well from the beginning, she is an educated woman with a degree in accounting, she always followed through with everything we needed to accomplish. language is not a barrier for us as i know spanish to the point where if i don't know the word specifically that i can explain what i am trying to say and she will know what i am talking about. only needed a translator for my documents, which is a requirement, had to have an officially recognized translator for that, and being that i am a foreigner it was required to have a officail translator there for the wedding at the notary.

How's her English and where will you be living? Sounds like you could be on my path speaking Spanish the rest of your life.

You guys--here and in the Asian room are amazing. I don't think I could stay sane married to a woman who didn't have at least fair English speaking ability, especially if I couldn't speak her language.

My wife takes one on one classes with a speech pathologist, (free at a local university!) who not only helps her with her spoken and written expression---slang, idioms, metaphors, but also with linguistic English tongue twisters and accent reduction. She already spoke passable, but not really suitable for professional USA career work, English before coming to the states.

Quite often we lay in bed and work on words and I do help her (less and less lately) with words over the course of our days and nights, both at home and out on the town. (discreetly)

I work with a fairly large amount of native Spanish speaking people and it seems that once they get into their twenties agewise, and much more so past age 25 and up, they have a progressively harder time learning English. Unless it's an essential life--survival in the work place skill, many never really 'get it'. No, it's not impossible--it's just very difficult.

I wonder if what initially seems 'cute' and interesting over the course of a romance---namely a large language gap, becomes increasingly exasperating over time if English doesn't improve?

I'd go bonkers for sure if I'd married a Spanish, Thai, Japanese or Chinese woman who knew virtually no English, but that's my short coming, I guess.
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

It is not a big deal when you both share at least one common language. Personally I want my children to be, at a minimum, bi-lingual. I know this will slightly retard their early language development in comparison to their mono-lingual peers, but it will pay off in the long run.

I am looking to relocating to a Spanish speaking nation for the rest of my days. As such, I have every intention of speaking Spanish with fluency in the years to come. For me, her mastery of the English language is not a high priority. It would be nice and make conversing with most of my family easier, but I am not too concerned. My mother speaks Spanish to a degree(better than I do right now. Not too much better, but she improves every year), one sister is fluent, another sister speaks at a very good conversational level.

The only time her lack of English will be of real concern to me is when we travel outside of Spanish speaking countries/areas. She will be totally dependent on me for translations. I would prefer it if she could be a little independent when we travel overseas.

I don't mind talking spanish with her right now. From my own personal experience the only way to actually learn a diferent language well is to speak it all the time. My wife does not have people to speak english with there currently so i am not to worried about that until she is here with me. But she is very smart girl and i have no doubt she will learn rather quickly.

Congratulations Eddie!  I just got back from a week in BAQ a couple days ago ... I was probably proposing around the same time you got married ... hahaha

Thanks for your offer to help with marriage advice.  I'd appreciate any info you could give me on getting married in BAQ: the process, a good notary, translator, etc.

Cheers ... Whitey
