The Colombians hate the Ecuadorians, The Ecuadorians hate the Peruvians and on and on. I expect if you tell a Colombian they are Latin they would reply "No, I am Colombian. Everyone always talks about how racist Americans are when in fact I think Latinos, Hispanics or whatever you want to call yourselves are far more racist and prejudiced then Americans . My wife talks down many nationalities she meets here in the states and not a one of them are what we would consider Americans.

At some point, a man might think it is best to just start all over and make everybody look identical.
I remember reading something about that though, and even if everybody was pretty much homogeneous, then the slightest difference would be used as a way of separating one person from another.  For example, Kiltboys nose is 1/2cm larger than mine, therefore he is different, and at that point all sorts of attributes can be automatically ascribed to him.   I'm just glad I have a lady who looks quite a bit different than myself, yet is as human as anybody else, for better or worse! :)

It is all about being politically correct.

Yup, that is pretty much it, depending on what "latin" means for each country (forget about the dictionary we have our own definitions!) it can be acceptable or not, as you probably already noticed, over here in Mexico what bothers us the most is that people change our location, and I am ashamed to admit that over here the word latina=bad girl  :-X , because most of the latinas we know happen to be in fact americans that come here to party.

I did not know about Brazil though, maybe for them it's about the size of the country? a bigger difference in culture? I am curious about this

I always thought that the term 'Latin' sort of enveloped everyone from Mexico down, but I guess that may come across to some depending on which country it is as an insult.

Some countries don't want to be thrown together in the same 'Latin' stew and this I can understand. ;)

I'd say it's the bigger culture difference, especially the language. And I also think there is a general sense that "we are better than the others" (just like Argentinians :P).

I asked you that because in my understanding a Latina would be any girl from Latin America, which includes Mexico. But I understand that if it's a word with bad connotation there, you don't want to include yourself ;).

Actually it is funny, I tried to think who "we hate" in Mexico and the first thing that came to mind was chilangos, that is people in Mexico city, but I was there and it confirmed my thoughts on that they are good people, with an annoying accent but that is not their fault  :P

There is a thing called malinchismo here, my friends tease me saying I am a great example for it because I have no interest in "national goods"  :D
