philippinos & animals
« on: July 25, 2009, 11:25:40 PM »
I know that some philippinos eat dog. i guess that's ok if it's just an old stray
as long as it's not my dog i guess that is just their way.
the question i have is how do they treat animals in general?

Marily has a black cat named kimkim. her aunt comes by to from time to time & she stated that she would like Marilys cat. marily declined the offerbut about a month later she went to visit a friend & who had a litter of kittens at her house. well Marily saw a little black one that looked exactly like kimkim only smaller & decided to take it home with her. She had it about a week when her happened to come by & she saw both cats & asked if she could have one. Marily said she would have to think about it. Marily & i talked & i explained that 2 cats cost twice as much to feed, & you have twice as many vet bills. we both agreed that kimkim2 (the kitten) should go live with her aunt.

well Marily's aunt is now in London working so she intrusted the kitten to her sister.
Somehow Marily get's word that the kitten is now gone,no longer with her aunts sister.
It would look as though for what ever reason the sister through the kitten out like a piece of trash.
what kind of person would do that to a 2 month old kitten??
there sure are some sick [snip]s in this world

My wife's family has never eaten dog but then again they aren't impoverished to the point of hunger.  Honey says though her dogs have disappeared several times and she remembers neighbors who have offered to purchase their dogs.  Just possibly her parents sold them but she's not sure.

As for the cat situation.  No one eats cats that I know of.  And I think all Marily has is suspicion.  Why not just ask?  The cat being moved around might just be lost?

What i know is this Bear
Marily said that she does NOT want to go to find out because she does not want to find out for sure.
It is as if she already knows even though no one has told her yet.
She gave the kitten away & now she feels responsable even though i told her that she isn't.
I am not sure but i don't think i will bring up the subject when i chat with her.
If she says something about it then that is another matter.
I think word got back to Marily through her parents but I'm not sure.
The word Marily used was "Gone" she was told that the kitten is gone & i guess nothing more.

I do not like dogs all that much
no i don't kick everyone that i see but i am not a dog person, even though dogs do like me.
If my sister said that she was moving to London & wanted be to take her dog i would have to say no.
so all that had to be done in this case was say " no sorry but i don't want a kitten"
how hard would that be??

Chinese people eat them. It's good for virility supposedly. No idea about the PI.

I haven’t seen much of any outright cruelty to animals over there, but their attitude toward pets is much different than here.

Cats or dogs usually stay outside, are fed mostly table scraps, and are rarely considered as members of the family.

If a pet gets sick, there are virtually no veterinarians except a few in the larger cities, and the typical Filipino family can’t afford good medical care for their own children, let alone for Fido or Fluffy. I did see a good number of 3-legged or crippled dogs.

Ask your girl what kitty eats. Usually fish heads/tails and left-over rice, especially if she lives in the province.

OBTW, asosena tastes OK, but nothing like chicken.  ;)

i sent Marilys cat a couple of cat toys with catnip in them & a package of cat treats. From what i understand the cat just loved the treats. Marily lives in manila now so i think she feeds kimkim cat food but i'm not sure so i will ask.

Most people in the Philippines don't treat pets like members of the family like we do in the US. As Ray said, they are usually left outside to roam as they wish. I brought a big box of dog biscuits to help the dogs (most are rather wild) get used to and tolerate me. People had never seen such a thing and were amazed!

As to eating dogs and cats, that is not the norm in the Philippines today. In fact it is illegal. However, sometimes men will get drunk and have the munchies...then LOOK OUT MAN! "Asocena is usually consumed as pulutan (Filipino; snacks or food served while drinking alcoholic beverages; loosely translates to "finger food")." I know it smells like crap when they burn off the hair! But, I'm told by some Filipinos that it is very tasty. Ray is more adventurous than I and has rated it "OK."  I will probably just take his word for it!  ;D Since, most dogs here are mangy and rather sickly looking.

"The consumption of dog meat is a controversial subject in countries where this is practiced, probably with the exception of China, where it is legal. South Korea banned the sale and consumption of dog meat shortly before the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Taiwan and Hong Kong also forbid the practice. Other countries where dog meat is consumed include Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Germany, Cambodia, and Switzerland. In the Philippines, Republic Act 8485 (Philippine Animal Welfare Act) has made the practice illegal since 1998."

Well maybe the kitten was thrown out on it's ear rather than eaten but either way it is gone

Dave,

I tried it way before that, so no laws broken. I was offered some by neighbors and only tried it to be polite.

In Luzon, you used to see signs in front of small roadside restuarants... "Pulutang Aso Dito"

Hey Ray,

I was offered dog in 2006 (illegal).  ::) It was a mean, nasty dog that bit my wife's uncle twice and 2 cousins, as well as numerous neighbors.  The only reason that I declined eating this one was because it was a mangy looking dog. If it had bitten me, I would have eaten it mange, illegal or not! I politely declined and bought a couple bottles of Red Horse instead.  :P

I just won't eat those nasty fish heads and eyeballs! Some friends were trying to get me to eat the frigging "cheeks" the other day.

Man!!!  One of my wife's friends came back from fishing a few months ago and gave my wife a chest of redfish heads.  I wouldn't even talk to her for a month cause I knew she was gonna try and get to eat some.  I don't care if there's a lot of meat in the head.  Anything that looking at me I ain't gonna eat.  Now if she pulls the meat out and puts in some sort of meal I'll try it.

It's a good thing you guys aren't married to a Japanese woman. Fish heads are important (and tasty) part of Japanese diets. Kama (collars) and Tama (heads) have the best meat on the whole fish. On smaller fish (and shrimp) you eat the whole head. I was reprimanded by my wife on my first trip to visit her during shogatsu (new years) for not eating the head of a small fish served in the osetchi-ryori (ceremonial new years feast.) It's rude and considered bad luck, so I complied, and have been a fan ever since.

In the old days in China, Mandrins, (royalty) used to dress as peasants to travel so that they wouldn't be kidnapped and held ransom by local warlords (the gang bangers of the time.) If a local warlord captured a group of traveling peasants, they'd feed them a fish. Only the royalty knew to eat the heads, so they could figure out who were real peasants and who were just disguising themselves as common folk.

The fish heads and shrimp heads aren't so bad. Digging out and eating the membrane form the shell of a crab was pretty so-so, but I bet it would be fun to do when out crabbing with some friends here in the US...

I was born & spent the first few years of my life on an island - St. Lucia.
As a kid I used to eat fish heads, I though the fish head was the best part of the fish.

Guys they are tasty   ;D     try some one day.

Fish head, crabs, shrimps, lobsters - I have done them all.
If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

Fish Heads...Yummy!

Oh man!

Jeff S & kfc are absolutely correct. The tastiest part of the fish is the meat in the head.

I can remember a looooong time ago, the fish markets down at the Embarcadero in San Diego used to give away free fresh fish heads to their customers who asked for them, mostly Japanese and Filipinos. Nobody else wanted them! Now they charge a premium price for them.

If you guys want to start eating fish heads, try some fish-head soup first, or fried dilis, a Filipino favorite pulutan. Dilis are very small, like baby anchovies, and the heads are very tasty. You can buy them dried in Asian markets and then fry them up for a tasty snack or side dish. Just eat the whole fish or bite off the crunchy heads first. Dip them in a little spicy vinegar. They are great with cold beer or Cuba Libres!

Once you master the heads on the little boogers, it’s just a matter of super-sizing your order…  :D

Dave i told Marily that when i come to visit i don't want to eat anything that looks back at me. he he he
she said ok but then she asked if it was ok for HER to eat these kind of things.
