YOUNGER WIVES 'HELP THEIR MEN TO LIVE LONGER'

LONGEVITY: Men who marry younger women tend to live longer
Tuesday June 2,2009

By Laura Clout

MEN who marry younger women are more likely to live longer, according to population statistics.

The study at Germany’s Max Planck Institute also found that men marrying older women are more likely to die early.

Men cut the risk of premature death by 11 per cent if their wives are seven to nine years younger.

The figure rises to 20 per cent for men who marry women between 15 and 17 years younger. Scientists say the figures may be the result of natural selection – that only the healthiest, most successful older men are able to attract younger mates.

“Another theory is that a younger woman will care for a man better and therefore he will live longer,” said institute spokesman Sven Drefahl.

The results showed that women benefit from marrying a man of the same age. Wives with husbands older or younger by between seven and nine years increase their chances of dying early by 20 per cent.

This rises to 30 per cent if the age difference is close to 15 and 17 years.

On average in Europe, most men marry women around three years younger.

The average age to get married has risen steadily since the 1960s. The study examined deaths between 1990 and 2005 for the entire population of Denmark.

I would like to see the following as peer review of the statistic:

- age of man when entered in to marriage with a significant younger partner
- percentage of first/second(or more) marriages
- time married to the younger partner.

The study would be valid if a 40-year old marries a 20-year old and lives to 95, but nof if a 90-year old marries a 20-year old and lives to 95.

I guess that when looked at the data properly, it would show that old guys who marry younger women are old guys.  ;D

But the study is not invalid for this case because it specifically only deals with "cutting the risk of premature death".

Even if your 90-year-old man died on his wedding night, I don't think it would be considered a premature death at age 90...  :D

obviously men only think for themselves.  When comes to Titanic, the famous quote "women and children first", these men obviously ignore the rules and decide to 'push' women and chioldren away ..........

According to your statistics, men who marry younger women - live longer.... but what about these poor women who marry older men?  SHORTER LIVE ???  :(

That has got to be one of the most ambiguous set of results I've ever seen...what happened to isolating one variable and testing it?

True.  It doesn't tell cause-and-effect.  Are younger women more interested in a healthy lifestyle, so they keep their older husbands healthy?  Are the men keeping themselves healthy to keep up with their younger wives?  Are the younger women choosing men who are simply healthier for their age?  Who knows?

....wonderful news.....fortunately, I don't need European socialists telling me how to make personal decisions, my common sense that God blessed me with has been sufficient most all these years.

BHO will now probably tax us guys more because we're going to be a drain on the health care system  (but..but..the female spouse has a shorter lifespan, so it should all even out, right?).  lol

Nor am I, though I look older (one of the benefits of an Asian wife, you get accused of cradle-robbing even if you are close in age).  ;)

I agree with this point as overall the results don't mean much but on the overall topic I'd agree with the article. None of my arguments have ever been against the premise of the article. My arguments are based on my own experience dating a certain age group in the various countries I've traveled too. The women I felt were more ready for a serious relationship where ones at least in their early 20s who were finishing college or starting a career.

I can't think of ever reading anything on this message board where anyone has come out and said a marriage with an age gap of 17 years is bad. I will admit I think dating teenagers (regardless of male's age) is generally a bad idea if you are looking for something serious (which is my opinion and doesn't apply just to large age gaps... the classic example would be Sara Palin's daughter). But what I openly admit makes me want to vomit is the senior citizen (who already bought his burial plot) using something like AFA to go to socials looking for girls that would be at their senior prom here in the states.

I know for myself I would try to take good care of my health and appearance if I had a wife 20 years younger just to a least try and match her energy level somewhat so we can have fun experiences together.  Mabye that plays a role in why men who marry younger women live longer.   I think anyone who wants to date someone younger should do what there heart tell them.  For me though, since i have been talking to a great number of filipina women, I find the age range from 27-30 to be the most comfortable.  I see a huge difference between that age range and say 20-25.  The girl i really like is 30 yrs old and has two bachelors degrees and she is like a breath of fresh air compared to all the others. That is like a 12 year age difference between us.  So i was somewhat surprised that this sort of thing does seem to make a difference to me.

Hey Heruamen,

It is great to see you got right back in the saddle! I look forward to your return! You are considered young (in your prime) for a foreigner in the Philippines. A 12 year age difference is nothing here. I was considering an age range of 27-35. My wife was 26 when I met her and thought maybe she was too young for me, since I was 43 at the time. It really depends on the individuals involved. Nine years later and still going strong!

Hey Dave - Don't you know that because you're old, ugly, fat, bald, and handicapped, she's only after the green card and your $$ - Oops, I forgot, you guys moved back to the PI and you're retired. So much for that theory. Let me think up another one.

I think you’re right on with your theory about men with much younger wives going out of their way to take care of their health and appearance. It worked for me.

From my experience, 30 seems to be a kind of invisible barrier where Filipina attitudes toward marriage change dramatically.

As they approach 30-years-old, the fear of becoming an old maid starts to sink in and they think more and more about marriage and family life.

After 30, they start to get really concerned if they will ever be married and have children, and family and friends will constantly nag them about marrying before they get any older. Marriage now becomes a priority rather than a fantasy dream.

By 35, desperation starts to set in and they drastically readjust their standards in what they will accept as a mate. Now they begin to seriously consider a much older spouse than they had always dreamed about. All of those previous rejects now suddenly become viable options for a prospective husband.

If they reach age 40 and are still unmarried, then all hope is lost for a “normal” married life with a family of their own. They will inevitably be seen as an “old maid” by their friends and family. Very few Filipino men will even consider marrying a woman over 40. It’s to bad because age forty for a woman is when they start to reach their prime, IMHO.

Good luck with your new 30-year-old friend. She sounds like a real winner.

Ray
