Is it normal?
« on: May 06, 2009, 09:58:39 AM »
When comes to business, it is normal that they have very poor customer services, poor time management, poor business skills ........ you name any.

Now what about lifestyles?  For example when going shopping to buy food.

1)  When I was in Bogota for a week in March, my prometida and I went to shopping to buy food for the week.  We bought food.   She keeps forgetting to buy few items.  Many items were not covered.  For example she forgot to put 'sauce' for the spaghetti in the basket.  She had to order it from local shop via phone.

2)  When she cooked sphagetti & bolognaise for supper one evening.  I had very big meal and she had medium meal.   When I saw the saucepan, I found out that there were many spaghetti left - enough to feed for 6 more people!!!!!!!!  I asked why there were many spaghetti left.  She told me that she thought it was enough for 2 people when placing spaghetti in.

My prometida is a mother of 3 children (age 14, 8, 5) but it seems she hasn't learn how to budget food and how to cook dinner enough for number of people required even though she is a good cooker  ;D

I wasn't complain about the food we waste during my stay for the week, but I am more concern about her doing it daily with her children.  I wouldn't like to waste it when we live together.  I do not want to eat 30 days worth food for only 10-15 days a month - if you know my meaning.

I wonder if it is normal for Colombian people not know how to budget for the food and anything else.  Colombia is not very wealthy country, but they should know how to budget.

I don't know about colombian people, but I think it depends on the person and their family, for example my dear mother, she grew up in a big family but being the youngest daughter she did not know how to cook, so when she married, she would end up with lotttsss of extra food and yes, it was not rare to have to go back to the shop because she did not know the ingredients she needed.

On the other hand here I am, only child and my father is not home that often because of work, love cooking but dislike having to go out to buy just one little thing, so I make a point of either get what I need or work with what I have.

In Mexico unannounced guests are not rare, so I am used to cooking for 3 or 4 people even if there is only 2 or 3 of us... my mother has 6 brothers and 5 sisters so I guess her subconscious was asking her to cook for about 15 people :D

Bit what is important to you?  Would you rather have a woman who left extra spaghetti in the pot or who was faithful and a loving and caring partner?

She may not have been used to cooking and was trying to make an extra effort for you? Did you consider that?

There are so many difference between the cultures (and I live in Bogota and I speak more then decent Spanish, so I see the differences every day) that if a gringo listed every diffference as a red flag or a shortcoming, it would be impossible for him to find a woman to bring back to the States.

Maybe their skills aren't bad.  Maybe yours are good.  And you are looking for someone as melancholy (detail oriented) as you.  I suggest you look for someone sanguine (fun oriented) though to balance you out.

Dennies tries to make your question dishorerable and always self promote himself too.  You not trying to say spaghetti is red flag. Every post talk about ""living in Colombia"" he think his opinion carry more weight than anybody elses. He is pompous and wrong.

My opinion bluecat is this too much food mistake can be corrected in future and sometimes other family eat extra food like wolves when you go home

Thanks Herbrags.  Hope any mistakes will be corrected in the future.  You know some people never learn their mistakes!!  I was only concern for people to waste money especially not from those who aren't from any 'wealthy' countries.

I hate when people keep looking for any red flags.  These people shouldn't be looking for any Colombian women if they keep on looking for any red flags!  Remember Colombia has 3 colours on their flags  ;D

I have to admit who cares? You worried enough to note it here. How do you know if she was not worried about someone showing up later. You do not have to cook anymore right? Now there is left overs for tomorrow or later that night. Herbrags what was dishonable about the question dennis ask? You are real sensitive since showing up here about anyone posting a response other than what you were looking for. Why don't you tell us a little about yourself?

There are many AW who would do the same thing.  She may need a little help and guidance from you.  Seems like a simple thing if she is willing to listen to you.

Jimmy, didn't your mother ever tell you there are millions of starving children in China who would love that chocolate milk?  In deference to Moms around the world (coming up on that special day) you should think about air freighting that milk overseas somewhere before you just toss it.   ;D

So Jim, are you gonna give us a Vegas trip report, or did all the details "stay in Vegas"???

In regards to the topic, there are some "disorganizational issues" in our household from time-to-time. I'll just say that some of the things mentioned sounded a bit familiar.  ;)

GatoAzul,

YES!  It is VERY normal!!!!!

I dated a calena for a year.  She was HORRIBLE at managing her money.  I tried to speak with her about it, but she was a stubborn sort.  (A reason why I ended it.)  She eventually told me she spends money until she has none left.

Her family was relatively poor and did not have extra money.  She never learned how to budget.  She always saw her mother spending her entire pay check on the household needs.  She thought that was what everyone did, and I was just cheap.  She also never learned how to shop.  She just went to the corner store or the closest store that sold what she wanted and paid whatever price was being charged.  She had NEVER HEARD of comparison shopping!!  It had never occurred to her that the same item might be available at another store for a lower price.  She agreed with me that that was a good thing to do but suddenly became too 'tired' to do the leg work involved in comparison shopping whenever I suggested it.

This is not unique to Colombia.  There are many poor in the US who are equally terrible at managing money.  You have to learn how to manage money.  Unfortunately, if you don't have much growing up, you can't get any practice.  It is usually those who are the poorest, who are the worst at managing money.  It is much easier to take a person out of poverty, than it is to take the poverty, or rather the mindset that poverty creates, out of the person.

we forget that we have the luxury to travel by CAR to shop , where as they have a bus or walk in most cases .

I had read some stat one time that it was like 1 out of 140 families in SA have there own car . It was really some outrageous number .

As far a a budget ????  ask them  if any of them had ever had a savings account ?
