« on: March 18, 2009, 12:40:36 AM »
Hello all,

I am looking at moving to Korea...leaving behind a lot of stuff that I dont need, and wondering if any of you have lived there for any amount of time.  I think that it is time for me to get up and go, just wondering about if any of you have done this...Thanks

Seriously?? For how long? Do you intend to come back?

What’s your K-1 status? Are you still getting married? If so, where?

Hi there

I am currently living in Korea and have been living here for 14 months now.
I'm on a E-2 visa and single but there is a process for bringing over dependents.
Most of the foreigners here in the Seoul area are English teachers but some foreign engineers are employed by Samsung.
I'm not sure what kind of advice you are looking for. All I can say is that I am yet to get tired of Korea and the lifestyle that I have here is in many ways better than that I had at home.

DO you have a job offer here?

Work, I'm guessing.  If you are looking for a job in Asia, you'll get a better paycheck if you land a job in S. Korea, Japan, or Hong Kong.

yes, I have a job offer.  I am looking at going because education is getting cut all over the place here.  I have always wanted to live in Asia, and in the Philippines, I wouldnt be able to make any money at all.  So I am thinking about going overseas because of the benefits available there.

Yes I think the Philippines is a place to go AFTER retirement and not before. It sounds like you are a qualified teacher so you should receive a salary of at least 2.4 million won.
The exchange rate has taken a battering recently with the won falling and falling but this should change now that trillions of dollars have been printed.

Will you like it? Well I'd give it a try. Since you are married to an Asian you probably won't experience culture shock as hard as the average newbie.

You'll surely enjoy the food in Korea, well at least I would. I go to Garden Grove for Korean food all of the time and my wife took a Korean cooking class not too long ago and makes it all of the time.

Hi Staggo,

Move to the Philippines, build a nipa  hut on the beach for about $2 (cost of nails), open a sari-sari store (don't take credit!)  ;), and spend your days fishing, swimming and laying in your hammock.  8) I have only been in the Philippines less than a day and my brain has been flooded ways to make supplimental income. You have to deal with people who have a strong desire for a product and the ability to pay. But, at the moment, I am not so inclined. Fortunately, I have retirement, so it would only so it would be more of a hobby.

Hey Dave: Nipa huts have NAILS?

Why don't you start a boat building business. Or build a boat and take rich Kanos fishing. There goes Dave now:

Or maybe build a big boat and take a lot of Filipinos fishing.

Hey Jeff,

Only nipa huts built by 'rich' people!  ;D

I think you may need to design me a bigger boat, since most of the neighbors would probably tag along.  ;D

The second boat there was built by an expat in the PI married to a Filipina. Those are a few of his relatives.

Hey Swisskid,

Now that is what I call an entrepreneur! A water transportation/laundry service. I wonder if he is a barber as well?  ;D

LOL,

I love how you guys turned the thread into something about boats...I was originally asking about advice about going to Korea, and then there were boats and barbers lol

Good one Staggo. As Marshall once said:

I love this forum.  You are the most ADD guys I've ever seen.  I love the way an awesome travelogue love story in the tropics ends up in a conversation about car names

It's usually Dave's fault but I have to take some credit for this one. But I was teasing Dave. BTW Dave, did you get my PM?

Yep...It usually is my fault! "ADD" is my middle name. ;D

Hey Staggo,

How about this...Take a boat to Korea and don't get a haircut in rough waters.  ;D Also, if you decide to go, leave your pet dog or cat back home in the US.  :P
