Sorry if this is off topic but instead of our usual crazy driving trips in Peru - we are thinking of going to San Andres & Providence Islands   - its closer to Central America but it is part of Colombia

I can find things on San Andres but I would like to hear from someone who has been

I cant find enough info on Providence / Providencia - Its pretty remote and it looks super! Lots of snorkeling and time at the playa - We are bringing JLO's little sister "Modelo Numero Dos"

it looks very cool and I was hoping some of you guys could give me the down low on the place

Hope all is well with you and JLO!!!

I went to San Andres back in 2003. The beaches are nice and the water is really clear and beautiful.  It is very hot and humid during the day. It is pretty laid  back at night.  It is a great place to visit for three or four days....I would get bored there after that.

Chris is right. There's enough to do for a short stay but beyond that, borrrring. Unless of course you're on your honeymoon or in our case, our honeymoon before the wedding.

I love island life

I have been to Hawaii about 8 times and I got to spend 28 days on Kauai - i had my own little ohana and a rental 4x4

I lost weight and had the time of my life trekking and swimming in waterfalls etc

I really want JLO and her sister to do some good snorkeling - we did not find much in P.R or Punta Cana - the Big Island of Hawaii has good snorkeling FYI

anyway we are looking into San Andres - Peru has no really good sand

I have been to both Hawaii and San Andres Island. You cannot compare the two. Hawaii is much larger, much more beautiful, and there are A LOT more things to do in Hawaii. San Andres is a lot smaller than any of the Hawaiian islands.

If you have been to Hawaii 8 times, then you will laugh at San Andres Island. Don't get me wrong- San Andres is beautiful and has some beautiful beaches, but overall it is not in the same league as Hawaii. For example, you mentioned waterfalls in Hawaii- there are no waterfalls in San Andres that I know of. The landscape of San Andres is pretty but not even close to the beauty of Hawaii.

Also keep in mind that San Andres is Colombia and Hence the hotels and restaurants are the same quality as Colombian hotels. The Hawaiian hotels/restaurants are much nicer. There are one or two nice hotels at San Andres but they are not cheap.

I still recommend that you visit Sand Andres because it is a nice place to get away. It does have some nice beaches and pretty landscape. Just don't stay there long because you will get bored within a few days.

What about those "crazy driving trips in Peru"?  Did you rent a car?  I understand that gas is about $6/gallon & that gas powered vehicles with carburetors won't work well at high altitudes.  How are the roads and are there beaches or towns worth visiting close to Lima?

Peru has nice beaches in the North (Mancora, Punta Sal). Salinas, Ecuador (near Guayaquil) is also nice.

as far as my driving trips in Peru - I am sure I posted about them

I own a turbo diesel Nissan Mini Van that we go on our trips in. So far we drove to Mancora and up in to Ecuador

last trip we drove to Huaraz and Chavin in the mountains

I wish I could go to Singlefathers wedding (we could drive up to that also)

the bad part of driving in Peru is the highway is not a highway. Its more like a old route 66 with more congestion in spots (and more pot holes ) you drive right up main street in any little town - Main drag Mancora is actually the highway

We are off to Peru for Christmas real soon. We have a total of 6 suitcases and 4 are over weight. I am hoping that my excess bagges fees are only $400

My last Trip to San Andres was back in 2005. I stayed at the Decameron resorts. The good thing about it is that you can make reservations to have lunch or dinner at any of their all inclusive hotels. I mean meals,drinks, cigarettes. You can also use the pools of any of their hotels. The beaches are great, the water is nice but I agree it is not Hawaii but it is a great get away. You can hire a cab and drive a round the small Island just remember to make deal with the driver before you start the ride..They speak English so no need of translation.
