Hello everyone, I'm a new member

For the last 3 years I have been contemplating whether or not to pursue my curiosity on dating a foreign woman from Latin America.  Numerous relationships with American and western women has led me to believe that based on my personality, and preference on what I expect and is willing to give to a woman, my pursuit of happiness with a local American woman may be a futile and taxing task.

 I would prefer a woman that is independent yet has strong family values, over complaining on Oprah about how they are entitled to receive more from a man, than what they are willing to give. I went to Brazil for carnival 2 years ago, and I must say that I was shocked on the abundance of beautiful women.  Of course I was also disappointed by the number of young women that seem to be prostitutes (>95% of the women that I aproached or that aproached me).  I am still determined however to meet a sincere, honest, loyal and good woman from either Brazil or Colombia.  I included Colombia because of all the reviews about Colombian women, although I have never been there.  I'm still aprehensive on traveling to Colombia though because of all the negative press that it recieves. I'm not sure if I should go back to Brazil next year, or try Colombia.  Should I try an agency, or join a dating site and meet up with some women in a specific city.  I am currently listening a spanish Berlitz CD 3-4 days per week, and I have a portuguese verb book that I have yet to open.  I'm happy when I hear stories men finding love overseas, because It gives me hope. 

Any ideas on what regions to focus on would be greatly apreciated.

The "latin trip reports" section would be a good place to start.  Those of us who have used agencies in Colombia have posted our trip reports in there in good detail.

I'm part of the "use an agency" group.  Some don't think it's necessary.  It boils down to a personal preference I guess.

I've only been to Barranquilla and I've used www.latin-wife.com  A little expensive, but from what I've read...99% of the guys think it's worth it.  It's in Barranquilla and I highly recommend it.

Any apprehensions that you have about Colombia should have been dispelled by this weeks "No Reservations" show on the Travel Channel. Tony Bourdain had a wonderful time and journeyed to places that no one could go only a few years ago. It was a great show. Along with many guys here, I have been to Colombia numerous times. You need to keep your head screwed on and bring your Spanish - the people are great!

Some quick observations.

Obviously, Brazil is enormous and not much agency structure. But the women are amazing!

Colombia is doable if you focus on one city for a visit, unless you have tons of time and money. 

Peru has agencies in Lima, I don't think there is much in the rest of the country.

All three countries have beautiful women.  If you decide to go the dating web site route, find 10-15 women from one city, correspond, travel to that city and meet them.

If you use an agency, you can (potentially) meet a lot of women.

bar none, the most important thing you can do; learn as much Spanish or (Portuguese) as you can. If you're six months or a year away from a trip, you can get a lot of the language under your belt. Take a class at the local community college, keep on with the  computer software program, but get yourself into the language!  Go to the library, borrow and read travel guides.

And then come back to the board and ask questions, there is a lot of experience here.

Thank you for all your input thus far. I will look up the travel channel episode on Colombia.  I actually went to the Dominican Republic 6 weeks ago and got by with my little known spanish, although I really didn't have to say much when I went out at night to the clubs.  The women there are aggressive, and it's enough to make a man feel special.  Unfortunately it's not the kind of loving that I'm looking for.  I'm actually in the point in my life where I want more than just a physical relationship (can't believe I just said that).  
I have to choose my travel destinations wisely because as a physical therapist that works for a hospital I don't have very flexible and plentiful vacation time.  I could maybe take 2 trips a year for 2 weeks at a time.  So I'm sure that it will be a task in trying to focus on specific locations and women, so as not to waste my limited time and money.

A few of my friends have tried to talk me out of taking Brazilian women serious because of all the carnival videos they've watched and what they've heard.  My initial focus was going to be some Asian countries, but because of the distance and my observations that Asian women mostly date asian or white males (which I am clearly not), I didn't want to waste my time ( but I am confident that I can get any woman if she got to know me).  Forgive my statement if my observation came off as being a stereotype.

You're right that Brazil is a big country, with nearly the population of the United States, and I wouldn't even know where to start.  I've heard that one is wise to stay of the Rio area due to the abundance of working girls (professional girlfriends).

They've only watched videos and heard things,. The country has more to offer outside of Rio, there are the roads less traveled like, Porte Alegro in the south and Fortaleza in the north eastern coastal area. Since you've been there, you've seen the abundance of georgeous women.

Anyway, you have already been to Brazil, so why not try to visit Colombia (or maybe Peru), so that you will know the different.

I went to ACG in 2002 and I liked it so much that I went back a second time.  It may have changed since then, but if Ricardo is still the owner I would give him another try if I was ever in Cali again.  In fact, I think he may have saved my life.  He warned me about my wife's ex-boyfriend who came to the street where the agency was looking for me one night.  The night watchman said he brought a gun with him.  That's not good news in Colombia.

As an agency they have a reputation to having a lot of beautiful, young (maybe flakey) women.  Hey, the customers want beautiful, young women so that's what Ricardo provides.

From my experience ACG is only OK. I do like Ricardo and his brother is cool but it was always hit and miss with them.   Cali Charm will work harder to keep you active with women but their selection isn't too impressive.

There is another of the girl in the red polka-dots, a close-up - but I didn't see any others of the knockout in the denim dress. The photos were posted sometime in '07, so a while ago.

Maybe drop a PM to UnitedNut and ask him what he knows.

Sorry I don't know either lady. I'd have to avoid the girl in the dots myself, since she looks a lot like my niece..."but without the junk in the trunk" my niece has.

Welcome to P-L! I don't think it is necessarily a "Black or White" thing...more of an Asian thing. I have noticed that many women of various Asian descents, raised in the US (except California  ) prefer to date within their race or culture here. Filipinas might be the exception, fitting in and adapting quickly to their surroundings. The joke is that if you drop a Filipino off at the South Pole and come back 2 weeks later, they will be speaking penguin." Most of the White guys you see with Asian Ladies probably went overseas to meet them. I also know Black/Filipiina couples. Mostly African Americans, but one guy from Africa and several from Jamaica. I can't slide anything past you. I'm sure you know that Cubanos and Latinos are often VERY close to their primas. In fact I know 5 very well, who married their cousins.

OK, my "niece" and I are not actually blood related and technically we are no longer related at all (my ex's niece). But my niece and I are still very close (not that close)    and she still calls me "Tio" since I have been that since she was a baby (now 28 years old- single). In Hispanic culture, once a tio always a tio. I have many "sobrinos" but only one "sobrina." She has Type 1 diabetes and I used to give her insulin injections since she was 5. She eventually learned to do it herself (but always prefered me to inject her) and now has a pump.   I am VERY protective of her! Whenever she is around me, I m the one, not her papa, trying to get her to cover up, especially at the beach or on the boat! And there ain't NO WAY I'm posting her picture here...so don't ask!!!

Can someone who has used an agency please describe your experience, and was it worth the money?  What agencies do you recommend?
Do you stay at the agency's bed and breakfast, or at a nearby hotel then on a daily basis meet many women? I think for the first time I may use an agency, because I assume the women will come to you.  But if I meet women on an online dating site and meet them in their country, I may have to travel all over the place in unfamiliar territory.

Also, I know it's asking alot, but if anyone has been to both Brazil and Colombia, can you describe your observations on the difference between the women as far as how genuine, trusworthy and wifey material they are (in your subjective opinion ofcourse).  And I know it's kind a silly question but since I've never been to Colombia I don't know what to expect, but I am very interested in visiting next year.
