Receipt Letter Received
« on: September 25, 2007, 08:44:50 AM »
I finally got the receipt letter from Department of Homeland Security. I had been thinking about calling them, but kept putting it off. No need now as the letter is firmly in hand. Now, I just need to wait the 2-3 months for the approval letter. Unless my ex blasted me in ways I don't know about to receive her green card, there should be no issues.

Many thanks to WIII for the timely advice on Vermont.  ;)

First off congrats!! I'm sure all will go well.

Not to change the subject, Do background checks now involve personal interviews??  It sounds like your being just a bit paranoid.  I thought they just checked your criminal record and verified your status.

Thanks to all for your replies! I hope any bumps in the road will be minimal now that they have at least acknowledged that the process has begun. I am concerned that I may have jumped the gun in my haste to not get knocked in the head by the new fee. She has another partial semester to complete after this one before she gets her degree, and we don't need for her to have to stay there to finish and miss the window she will have to get her when she gets approved (crossed fingers and the knocking on of wood).  :D

I don't know. I was referring to the fact that my ex got her green card on her own. I was not involved, as we had split, but she could have thrown me under a bus to get her card, I don't know. She swears that she didn't, but she attempted at one time to say that I abused her and took me to court (it was thrown out), so I know she was capable of anything when it came to getting her card.

I am not sure how to proceed as far as the background checks required by IMBRA. We were involved before IMBRA came about, and from what I understand, the background checks collection is the burden of the agency involved if there was one. That time has come and gone and again, it was before IMBRA. I am unsure as to whether or not I need to send that info to her just to be sure she has it if needed.

Sol,

The visa is good for six months after it is issued, so she should have lots of time to finish another semester of school. If you are still worried that it might be close, she could always request to have the visa interview delayed by a couple of months if necessary. But wait for the interview appointment before you do anything.

As far as IMBRA background checks, don’t worry about it. If you had a criminal background that would fall under IMBRA scrutiny, you should have already disclosed that stuff on your I-129F petition. If there was any disclosure, she should definitely be aware of it.

She should be prepared for some possible questions about your previous marriage and your former wife during her visa interview. She should at least be aware of your marriage and know a little about the circumstances surrounding the divorce, how long you were married, were there children, where the ex is now, stuff like that.

As always, excellent advice, Ray! Thanks very much! She knows all about my ex, but we had that conversation about two years ago, so I might need to go over a few things before she has her interview. We have known each other for quite a while now, and we know each other and each other's histories pretty well.

Thanks again for giving me some peace of mind about the time frame and what we have to work with. I was worried about that, but equally jumpy about that frickin' god awful increase! When I went through this the first time, the K1/K3 was $110!

I would happily have paid the increase if it was the only option to get her here, but I preferred to avoid it if possible. It is good to know there is some room in there and the option to extend the date for her interview.
