Hiring an Immigration Lawyer
« on: August 09, 2007, 11:01:48 AM »
I know there is another site Visajourney.com that has good info about the whole K-1 process but I am curious to know what folks think on this board. Do people recommend hiring an attorney for the process or to just complete all the forms themselves?

I've seen some places advertise $1600 which includes the $455 filing fee.

If you can read, you can fill out the paperwork. Some people have a rough time with just following the instructions and not trying to "interpret" what they mean. They mean what they say. If a person feels the need to always read between the lines and think it's not straightforward, then that person would do better with an attorney by getting out of their own way.

That is about what I charge for the process.

You can buy a kit, hire an attorney, or do it yourself.

For those who dont want to spend the time or the effort or just worry a lot, hire a lawyer. For those who have the time, then either buy a kit or do it yourself. To be honest, it isnt rocket science and the information available on the internet is vastly superior to what used to be available.

Hell- USCIS even updates the instructions regularly these days!!!!

rpcv, I followed the step-by-step instructions for the K-1 visa on visajourney and it took me a total of an hour to complete all the forms and attach all the necessary documents.  It is real easy....fill in the blanks.  If you can follow basic instructions you should have no problem.  Open an account on visajourney and ask any and every stupid question you have.  I promise you will get fast and free help from people all over the world.  I did just that and ended up only spending the $170 filing fee.  With the new fee structure, you will need that extra money you would have spent on an attorney to cover the minimums required by the government.
