Are you in favor of the new immigration bill?
« on: June 12, 2007, 09:07:52 AM »
There is all this talk about how the "silent majority" supports this bill. What do you think? What is the opinion of those who use this board?

Problem with the bill they have, it’s a repeat of the 1986 bill that did nothing to stop the illegal from coming in, same open border. And it will do nothing to nail the employers who hired them.

Nothing will get funded, and it will be the same krap as before. You still have a porous border with a fence that goes half way, not enough agents to enforce anything, and no real enforcement to bust companies who hire the illegals.  What gets me is, they say they only come here to help their families, because there are no jobs, well, either fix your own country, or quit having kids you cannot support.

Interesting to see that there are two yes votes so far. I only heard from one person that was in favor of the mess.

It appears I'm the only guy on this board whose grandparents or great grandparents  immigrated to the Us without proper documentation for either political or economic reasons. (You all know what the word, "WOP" really stands for, "With Out Papers"). FYI, I was an early Bushie with some very conservative ideas. I also happen to live in the real world. In my world , we will never throw 12 million people out of the country. In my world I would rather have these people pay taxes and live with dignity as long as they follow the same rules and laws of those who were either born here or immigrated here legally. I understand they already broke the law by being here illegally. Lets fix it. By doing nothing , thats the same as giving them amnesty unless we intend to deport 12 million people.
Also in my world there are jobs with starting salaries of $10-15 per hour that are going unfilled because there are not enough illegals to fill them. Where are all the Americans who scream they are losing jobs to illegals. Most are collecting welfare or some other government handout. Why work when they can eat McDonalds all day and walk to the mailbox once a week to collect their salary. But thats Ok because there "Real Americans".
Lets be smarter then the politicians who all have hidden agendas. Lets do whats good for our children and our childrens children.

Sorry, but I don't consider $2.5 trillion in IOU's as being something good for our children and grandchildren.

Deporting 12 million is a false argument.

As are efforts rewarding absconders and criminals by allowing them to stay.

The 1986 enforcement provisions should be enforced. 10,000 per alien per incident and a little prison time for those who harbor.

Cut off the employment and they will leave voluntarily.

Remember the maquiladora program. That was supposed to be the cure. And guess what? It didnt cure anyting

Am I crazy when I look at this horrible bill and I think about my own personal situation

I start to think that I should bring my wifes family here (illegally)

because if they are going to reward the illegals than why should we sit here and be punished for following the existing laws for legal family immigration?

My wifes best friend is here on a long overstayed tourist visa. I like the girl but should she get to be a full blown US citizen before my wife sister or parents?

My wife has aunts and uncles who came here before and I think got some type of amnesty back int he eighties and they are productive tax paying citizens. So what this says to me is - come here illegaly and things will work out

But ... I am an American first.
American Sovereignty is at stake

Enforce the laws we have on the books, secure the borders and follow the law

I would dream or moving to PERU - ignore their laws and then protest in the streets and demand they change the laws to suit me

Over 80% nay thus far but 12 votes is not enough to be fair. However, those numbers are about the same as my friends, family and clients are stating in their opinions.

I informed my congressman's liason that immigration was a one-issue vote for me. I will follow it up with a letter. I sent letters to the two senators.

Vote for amnesty and you are outta here, bucko!!! That is the message that they need to hear.

The politicians are hoping that the non election year passage of such a bill will give enough time for the public to forget. Dont let them forget.

I dont like the way Bush and his backers are trying to rush this bill through and make it law, something just doesnt seem right.
Besides didnt they say they were going to build a wall? what happened to the promised wall? You don't hear anymore about that.
Don't trust politicians, never have.

As one who spent much of the last 2 years in Mexico I have spoken with many Mexicans in private.  A few have jokingly mentioned that the US should just annex Mexico.  If 30-40% of Mexicans wish to work/migrate to the US (as noted in a published poll, the accuracy of which I cannot vouch for), let's get it over with now, they reason.  The pro-amnesty crowd should be countered with something much more effective: annexation.  Set the 31 states of Mexico as territories.  Let them each submit constitutions in conformity with the US Constitution -- just as other states historically have.  Put the oil and gas reserves into profit-making enterprises.  Prosecute political and police corruption.  Make all equal before the law.  The current bill will not stop illegal immigration any more than the previous efforts, so let's go on the offensive.  No Amnesty.  Annexation is Better.  (Bumper-Sticker that.)

Question: Why is it that I can't see the poll results?

It used to be that I could view the running results of a poll after voting but now I can't see any option for viewing voting results. Am I doing something wrong?

FYI- I cant see it either. Must be a secret ballot. I am working with Diebolt to improve the voting experience.

The poll shows 16 AGAINST the bill-
and 3 FOR the Bill

84% NAY so far

Obviously the LA Times did not speak to our voters

But not this sheiss!!!

pool says 16-3 AGAINST so far. I checked it to be shown to every one but I cant see it. I check it via the edit feature.

Thank God that not all of our Senators are willing to sell their country down the toilet for the benefit of a bunch of Illegal Aliens...

Quote

From Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC):

“I appreciate the effort to fund border security, but there’s simply no reason why we should be forced to tie amnesty to it. If the administration was serious about fulfilling the border security promises, then this funding should have been supported all along, not offered at the last minute to attract votes to a bad bill.”

“We have a serious problem with our immigration system, but this mess of a bill is not the solution. It puts amnesty before security, contains loopholes for criminals, and will increase the burden on taxpayers.”

“All of the border security triggers in this bill can already be implemented under current law. It is unfortunate that the bill supporters continue to hold border security hostage in return for passage of amnesty. Instead, they need to prove to the American people that they will secure the border first.”

Amen! Amen! A-freaking-men!

Nothing that I can see. I even tried setting the poll to show the results to anyone and to let voters change their votes but it is still not showing the votes.

System glitch possibly. Will ask Dan as he knows this software WAY better than I ever will.

Get out the Kool-Aid, folks. There are national polls that reflect the same numbers as this poll.

Next week, our elected representatives will ignore the will of the people-again- and the empereror with no clothes will then sign the damn thing.

I dont think there is a silent majority backing this bill, I think its a loud minority that backs the bill. They are pushing and trying to force this bill down our throats but the majority of the american people do not like it and do not want it.
Bush and the congress need to listen to the american citizen.

The House can hold hearings, propose its own version, etc.  I doubt the House will simply vote straight up or down on whatever the Senate passes, if it does pass something.  This will take months before the dust settles.  Let's make it a good scuffle.

Dear Mr. iavelli:

Thank you for contacting me to express your views on immigration reform. I appreciate hearing from you.

As you may know, the Senate recently debated S.1348, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007.

In its current form, this bill is unworkable and unfair. I am particularly troubled by its proposal to create a new guestworker program. I have always had problems with guestworker programs because I believe they lead to increased illegal immigration, a downward pressure on American wages, and a loss of workplace protections.

That is why on June 7, 2007, I joined 49 other Senators in rejecting cloture, thereby preventing the bill from proceeding to a final vote. Be assured that I will keep working to fix our broken immigration system in a manner that protects American workers and reduces illegal immigration.

Again, thank you for writing to me. Please feel free to contact me again about this or any other issue of concern to you.
