Tracking Cookie
« on: June 11, 2007, 06:26:59 PM »
Every time I visit this site my Norton Anti-virus warns that a tracking cookie has been placed on my computer. What´s up with that?

It's used to remember your account info so you don't have to re-login.  It's fine on a safe computer, but a public PC in a kiosk would be a risk.  Such passwords can be easily retrieved.

Evidently it was a "third party tracking cookie" placed by one of the advertisers on this site. I blocked it using "tools". This is a statement I found about them:

"Third-party cookies are created by a Web site other than the one you are currently visiting; for example, by a third-party advertiser on that site. The purpose of such cookies is usually to track your surfing habits, which is why third-party cookies are considered an invasion of privacy and riskier than first-party cookies."

Blocking it has had no efect on my auto login.

I have learned enough to know not to claim that something like this is not possible - but I will say that, to the best of my knowledge, none of the advertisers are using any kind of "tracking cookies" emanating from THIS site. If you find any more information, please let me know and I will track it down.

As Brainiac said, there *is* a cookie which the board software uses to keep track of logins - but it does NOTHING else other than to provide a convenience for the members.
