triguena or morena
« on: May 22, 2007, 09:37:34 AM »
Just wanted to get a Colombian to give me their opinion of what the definition means since its pretty confusing. Some of the women on the escort sites call themselves trigueña and others morena but they look nearly similar

trigueña seems to mean white looking and morena is more tanned looking colombians whilst blanca is blondes.

or is it ...

trigueña is more of the mestiza look like Salma Hayek which most people seems to have and morena is more of the beauitful beyonce look you see in Cartagena?

thanks

everything you wanted to know about this but were afraid to ask.  Oh, and the kitchen sink too.  Here is an interesting site:

been to that site before. Ridiculous amount of classifications but morena and triguena seem to be the same.

Local usage varies. What most USA people consider 'you know, a Mexican' would be called 'morena' in Mexico. Although Mexicans would understand the word 'triguena' and wouldn't be offended by it, they hardly ever use it. Now, in Colombia, it's a different story. I once made the mistake of calling a triguena a morena and was quickly given a very stern "Yo no soy NEGRA" in response.  Your millage may vary, country by country.

A morena in Colombia is a woman who is not black but who has a darker complexion than a white woman.

My wife would refer to Halle Berry as a morena. She would refer to herself as a triquena because her complexion is white but she has dark eyes and hair.

That doesn't make sense. If her complexion is White, then she would be a Blanca. As Halle Berry is mixed, she would be more likely a Triguena (This is not exact, but think of "Tri" in the old latin as 3.... White, Black, and Indian Mix, usually honey colored). A Morena would be anyone between Triguena and Negra.

Michaelb's answer above (I think) is the most accuarate so far, because... it depends on who you ask...

My wife is honey colored (or carmel colored), and considers herself a triguena (see pics in the gallery).

Clearly she is darker than UtopiaCowboy's wife.

Sometimes, however, my wife's skin seems very light and some people (Americans) ask me if (or think that) she is white (i.e. caucasian).  And I'm thinking, "what?"

My Barranquillan wife's sister has a complexion more like UC's wife, and I would agree with my wife that her sister is a triguena.

There are very few people I have seen in Colombia that my wife would consider "negra".

Bottom line is, it depends on who you ask...

one thing that this shows is that racism is rampant in colombia. people get offended and will snap at you if you say they are morena o negra, more so negra. my experience in colombia is that blanca is someone who is white with fair colored hair, say light brown, blonde and light eyes. triguena is still white but with dark/black hair, dark eyes ala catherine zeta jones. morena is darker skin like halle barry mentioned above, darker hair and eyes. negra is just that. if you've been to the coast you've seen "las negras", women who's skin is very dark and who work the beaches giving massages, braiding hair, selling fruit salads. these are just general classifications.

And then where does that leave the mestiza's (mixed white and indian)? which is the majority of the population in Colombia.

Id argue mestiza is triguena.

catherine zeta is blanca.

And I'd agree with you, if you're talking about Colombia, what we (i.e. U.S. English speakers) call 'mestiza' is 'triguena' in Colombia (and from what I understand...but hey, I'm NOT a native, so I could be wrong), to be called 'morena' in Colombia you would have to be a mix of Caucasian and Negro.....they have a word for mixed Negro and Indian, it escapes me at the moment, but I think it's 'zambo' ....Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela is an example. BTW, actual origin (or 'root' word, if you prefer) - 'triguena' comes from 'trigo', which means 'wheat' in English. Moreno(a) is the color brown....Mexicans use the term 'moreno' for skin color, but for brown hair and brown eyes, they are much more apt to say 'de cafe', which of course means (color) of coffee....I think Colombians also use 'de cafe' for hair and eyes too, but I don't want to wake her up to ask "Hey, what color is your hair?"

"Triquena" is more a pretty yellow skin woman , African Americans say shes
"'high yellow" or a red bone, butterscotch, my favorite!

"Morena" is just brown skinned

"Canela" is a slightly different complexion, the word means cinnamon in spanish

"Blanco" is white

"Negra" is dark or ebony skinned

Take your pick of favorite flavor fellas!

She looks OK. She must be a paisa since its people in that area that normally have this look. Its such a rare look. Cali seems to have the same.

She looks too dark to me to be a classic paisa. What I would consider a classic paisa is pale skin with jet black hair.

Paisa is used to describe the inhabitants of Old Antioquia, which includes the departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío. This includes the cities of Medellin, Manizales, Armenia and Pereira. The paisas are described (and like to think of themselves) as hard-working and frugal people, tenacious, adventurers, arrogant, passionate, loyal lover of house and land, individualist, creature of habit, visionary, tradesman, enterprising and persistent. They have done genetic studies of the population and they appear to descend from Spanish men and Native American women which I guess accounts for the combination of pale skin and the straight jet-black hair. There is also a significant portion of Jewish ancestry as well and many paisas look somewhat Jewish to me.

triguena, morena, blanca..... LOL, who cares? people are more than the color of their skin, at least that's what i was taught, maybe i'm wrong. these trivial, subjective labels mean nothing. if she looks good, she looks good.

In general I have to agree with you, color should not make a difference there are 3 categories a woman should be placed in regardless of her skin color she is either ugly, average or beautiful, my girlfriend is Morena or brown but still that triquena is my favorite there is something about that skin color or complexion that drives me wild!
