spanish 101 (not a show stopper)
« on: April 01, 2007, 03:45:28 PM »
For those of you like Neil who do not speak spanish - do not let it stop you. I don't fault you for not having the time or inclination to learn it. And while it is a huge plus it is far from a show stopper. Many guys are successful in the project without Spanish. Look at Sean. Don't let it stop you from going - just have a good gameplan. go with a good agency or tour group. Try the internet and fudge it with an online translator. You can do it!

Neil, this post was not just directed to you but others who might be on the fence. But I still feel bad about your disappointment in peru and the less then stellar agencies there. Don't give up on agencies..some are very good!

I am willing to help you not because you are a shooter and picked up the tab but because i think you are a nice guy. I can put together a profile for you so you can start chatting with some girls on latin cupid. I also have a girl i can introduce you to who speaks some English, very pretty and i think you might like (she does have a girl).

she is pretty and modeled when she was younger. More importantly, she has a good heart and comes from a good family. She has a very sweet girl about 6 mas o menos. She lives in Cali and speaks some English.

Decide if you want to give latin america a chance. I know you are aware that it does not always fall into place on the first trip despite what the optimists say

Papi,

In terms of Spanish...I can understand why you would  feel it is not important. Your objective in South America is to meet and enjoy as many women as you can for the "short term". Your just looking for a good time. Dont get me wrong....I am not putting you or that life style down...only making a point that for you or anyone who lives that life style, the language is really not that important because the individual is not interested in really getting to know the woman for the long term.

But for someone who is looking for a long term relationship hopefully leading to marriage.....meaningful communication is imperative. You need to learn at least some Spanish.

Saint Chris, I really don't think you know what I am seeking in a relationship. I didn't bother to learn the language so i could barter with ho's or taxistas

The problem with the spanish hype, is the nutjobs scare the newbies from going. Guys can meet the women of their dreams and figure out how to communicate later. The guy can take spanish if he is so inclined or better yet the girl can learn English. It works!

Papi, honestly, the newbies need to be scared. The guys that find good women without learning how to speak the language were lucky enough to find good women in the first place. They could have easily been played, but fortunately weren't, and those guys are few and far between. I think you mean well, but anybody with any experience at all would be telling each and every guy to learn as much of the language as possible before even getting on a plane!

You may call people who do so "nutjobs", but really...why did you take the time to learn it if it were not true? It's a nice dream and all, but without the hard truth, you are setting guys up to fail. The stuff that the chicas say about the guys who can't speak the language is enough to keep me making sure I keep getting better at it. Like I said, some guys are aware enough to be able to pick out the right ones regardless, but truthfully, most aren't, and as always, it takes a great amount of luck if you are not a mind reader to be able to discern someone else's intentions and/or motivations if they choose to cover them up and are good at it. Common sense should tell any knucklehead that he will come off like a gullible child if he can't string a few words together whether he is one or not.

How much respect do people who come here get that can't speak English? Why do you think it would be any different if you go elsewhere? It makes me laugh how great it must be for those who don't speak the language not knowing what might be being said about them. I guess ignorance can be bliss as the old saying goes.

Soltero,

good points all the way around.  Can't really argue with the logic you laid out.  It really does have a lot to do with the individual....and as I interpreted what you was saying, most men are at best....gullible and they would definitely need all the help they could get.

Sol, this is what TLC is for. they have hooked up a ton of guys who no habla espanol. How about all the guys on the russian board? i doubt few habla russian and there has got to be a ton of success stories.

i know guys that live in cali, speak good spanish and go home alone. spanish helps but guys like Neil can make it happen without it. don't scare them from going. not everyone has the time or inclination to speak it

Sean,

I know it may be a hard pill to swallow, but yes. Most guys are gullible when you wave beautiful woman in front of them, me included. There is too much space between words you can't understand to fill in the blanks with fantasy. I consider you one of the "lucky" ones. You found a true jewel.

Don't take my calling it  "luck" as taking away from your studliness and keen powers of observation  ;)

I had to learn to get out of my own way to find my amiga (hopefully soon to be novia)...

No dude, I knew exactly what you was saying.  I didn't take it the wrong way.  99% of the time your right, even when you aren't...you put it in such a way people won't notice.  LOL.   Keep up the good work.

Honest why do you insist on calling us nutjobs? It gets alittle old listening to that record playing over and over. It is very insulting to everyone here and it is one of the reasons alot of guys do not post here. You can beat that drum as long as you want about not having to learn spanish but I will stand by my remarks I made earlier. It is alot easier for any gringo to find his true love if he knows spanish. If that is not true then why did you finally admit that US NUTJOBS were right?

Papi, if what I wrote doesn't make any sense to you, then trying to say the same thing any other way will not dissuade you from continuing to tell guys they don't need something you yourself have taken the time to learn. I say scare the hell out of 'em, and you may have more happy marriages. If nothing else, you will have less guys getting taken as long as they stop staring at the girl's tits long enough to hear what they are saying if they can understand them.

I am not saying the girls are good or bad, nor am I saying they are out to take advantage of guys, but if you can't talk to them, how would you know? How much common sense would someone need to be beat over the head with?

Better to hear it now while you can still think before you are standing in front of Angelica with the double Ds, hair down to her ass, and an applebottom you could sit a beer and your morning paper on. I seriously doubt anyone could tell you anything at that point, newbies.

But Sol, having spanish is not the indicator for going south and having success. Guys can have success without it. Again, how many guys speak Russian? Yet, many workaround the language. Maybe it is my EFL training that encourages me  not to let spanish be a show stopper. Hop around, point, grunt then send your babe to english classes.

i will go one step further. you have an excellent command of the language yet are still officially soltero. i now speak it well enough to pass employment tests. yet my latest interest just went AWOL. At the same time, there are hundred if not thousands of gringos with hot latinas that don't speak a lick of it. there are other issues...

I have a fairly good grasp of the language NOW...lol...I was a newbie once also as was everyone else who is still plodding along including you.

Papi, as you know, the first and only woman I married, I married through this process. I was new and didn't even know the forums existed. I did everything on my own from searching on through filing the papers. Even though I had taken Spanish in highschool and knew the basics, I was not any where near a speaker of the language. If I had been able to better communicate with my ex, things may have turned out completely different (hell, I probably would have never married her), so if you are trying to make it out like I am a case to prove YOUR point, I am the main reason I made MINE.

Now, unless you can come up with something better than "there are hundreds if not thousands of gringos with hot latinas that don't speak a lick of it.", like this is some late night infomercial trying to sell some insomniac a great set of steak knives,  I have to leave you alone before I become a part of making your argument look worse than I want to. You are starting to sound like you want to get back in the agency biz.

not!

You know I just can't help myself when it comes to stirring up the pot. All the same, I sincerely believe that spanish is not a requirement for being successful at this...

Imagine that you can't speak any Spanish and your wife is talking on the phone. Who is she talking to? What is she saying? Or she runs into someone and starts speaking Spanish? What are they chuckling about? I just can't imagine living in that kind of world - it would be a breeding ground for suspicions which might be completely unfounded if only you knew what she was saying. And aside from that it opens a big window into her world, a world you're never going to be a part of if you don't speak Spanish.

it depends on a girl.  Woody Allen BTW has not had difficulty with getting women.  Most women fall in love by ears not eyes.

A (realistic) quiz! who gets the hot babe?

With all things being equal; the guy she can talk to or the guy she can't?

With all things being equal; the guy who can make her laugh, or the guy who can't?

With all things being equal; the guy who can talk to her family and friends, or the guy who can't?
