Gringo Statistics In Colombia
« on: March 30, 2007, 07:41:29 PM »
Dear American Citizen:

Yesterday, the U.S. Embassy’s American Citizen Services office sent an email message to U.S. citizens in Colombia, announcing the creation of the Consular Section’s new website.  Inadvertently, the message was sent in a way that revealed each recipient’s email address to the other recipients.

We recognize that this was inappropriate, and we greatly regret the error.  Unfortunately, it is not possible to recall the message, and so the most we can do is ask for your forgiveness and assure you that your email address will not be disclosed in future messages.

Please also accept my personal apology for the error.

Sincerely,

Ronald Packowitz
Consul
American Citizen Services
U.S. Embassy
Bogotá, Colombia
ACSBogota@state.gov

This was an email sent by the US Embassy in Bogotá to registered Americans in Colombia. It included close to a thousand email addresses. A f**kup for sure but interesting. If there are a thousand registered I wonder how many more unregistered Americans are living in Colombia. Would Doombug, resident statistics wizzard have any figures?

According to Jamie:

"Over 50,000 Americans live in Colombia."

(Quote can be found under, "What My Experience In Colombia Will Tell You," on the bottom of the page.)

According to the State Department (2007):

"Today, about 25,000 U.S. citizens are registered with the U.S. Embassy as living in Colombia, most of them dual nationals."

(Find quote under, "U.S.-COLOMBIAN RELATIONS," near the bottom of the page.)

Also, according to the State Department (2003):

"An estimated 50,000 U.S. citizens live in Colombia."

http://www.state.gov/p/wha/rls/rpt/17140.htm
(Under, "Why Colombia Matters")

Fifty thousand is about double the number of U.S. citizens who reside in that other bastion of expat. retirement--Costa Rica.

50,000 is about right for Costa Rica as well.

Still, 50,000 in Colombia is more than I would have suspected.

Of those I bet the overwhelming majority have Colombian citizenship as well. In fact with 600,000 Colombians in the US and growing each and every day, it's not surprising many of them get US citizenship and later go back to Colombia. I'd love to see the numbers for unattached gringos living there.

From that site:

"It has been estimated that 50,000 North American and European expatriates live in Costa Rica."

My estimate was for gringos only. And I based it on the number of sites I came across that listed figures ranging anywhere from 15,000 to 35,000. (I googled the following search terms: "U.S. citizens live" and "in Costa Rica".)

Still, I think everyone now has a general idea of how many gringos now call Colombia and Costa Rica home. :)

Thank you Mr. Doombug. I suppose there is no way of distiguishing native born gringos from Colombian-Americans in the statistics but that would be the most interesting figure.
