Cocaine jokes
« on: March 22, 2013, 07:09:36 PM »
My wife has already been exposed to the cocaine jokes of my friends. I told her to expect a lot more of that once she is here. It is just the Australian sence of humor plus ignorance. It is not meant to be offensive.

She understands that and accepts it.

However I am not allowed to make those jokes. Since I can't claim to be ignorant of Colombia.

It's funny though - because some of the first jokes her freinds had on me were about cocaine. Isn't that always the way? You can make insensitive jokes about your own country but not about someone else's country.

Of course that doesn't stop my friends making lots of cocaine jokes about my involvement in Colombia. But as I say - that is just the Australian sence of humor.

No, it's everywhere. She doesn't like the stereotype the cartels created for the world to exploit. Didn't you say on another thread that you haven't been with her in four months? You're together now in your country?

To be perfectly earnest, I was thinking the same damn thing.

I never found cocaine type jokes funny, especially those that paint Colombians as drug kingpins.   I have not made those type jokes around my wife, and the few times it has been discussed, it has been agreed that the people and/or laws in USA is where the main problem exists, not the Colombian farmers that grow the stuff.

I think perhaps one friend made a stupid remark once, when he saw how it was received he retreated into more neutral conversation, as I recall.  I don't think most of these young ladies wants their reputation soiled or to be stereotyped as part of the cocaine culture.

Was there a joke in there somewhere? I guess I missed the punch line…?

I understand that Colombians don’t like the negative comments from around the world regarding their past drug problems (and present drug problems also?).

But the cocaine production, violent drug cartels, smuggling, etc. IS part of their history, is it not? It isn’t wise to ignore history. I guess in time the negative remarks will fade away, but this stuff is still fresh in the minds of present generations and there are still many movies/documentaries showing on TV that are based on facts surrounding recent Colombian drug culture history.

Also, I never did buy into this leftist mantra that all the drug problems in other countries are the fault of Americans or US drug laws. BALONEY!

There are many other countries where drug use is prevalent, including use by the citizens of the countries producing this crap. And yes, the growers, distributors, smugglers, corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials in Colombia and other third world producing countries are the primary characters getting rich off the drug trade, so don’t count them out as major players in this too.

The bulk of the money from the drug trade STAYS in the U.S..  No demand,  no production,  no value.  Sure there are no corrupt - law enforcement,  politicians,  judges,  DEA or bankers in the U.S..  What was the main reason Wachovia bank was taken over by Wells Fargo?

Nazly has never noticed any cocaine jokes in her presence yet, even at high school now where there are many Canadians.  We mostly socialize as a couple with other Colombians, so not an issue there either.

The money paid for drugs smuggled into the US goes back to the foreign cartels who shipped it here.

Where do you think the Mexican and Colombian drug cartels get all their money??

Canadians and New Zealanders are very similar. In fact if you removed the accents you might find it hard to tell the difference. Australians are also like Canadians but more irreverend and in-your-face. It think it goes back to the early days of convicts and general outcasts of Britain that took a certain pride in being rough and ready. Australian humor is is dry, full of extremes, anti-authoritarian, self-mocking and ironic. What Australians often forget is that not everyone else appreciates this style.

It's a bit like the Newfie jokes in Canada. Australians do the same thing to most of their states and to themselves as well. They extend this to other people as well but they mean it in a friendly way. Hence since my wife is bascially a part of me, it is their way of being friendly. They think they are just being mildly offensive - which is considered just being neighbourly in Australia. It's juevenile and Australians should grow up and be an adult country but don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

No my wife is not with me but some of my mates have met her on Skype. With me translating and everybody doing their best to embrass me.
I tired to get my best mate to explain to my wife that removing my arm pit hair was gay. Of course that back fired spectacularly in every direction. Ah well, I've refused to cut them until she arrives in Australia so I guess I can be an uncouth hairy arm pit man for a few more months. Sigh!

Interesting hearing about Australian humor works.

On another topic,
I can't believe you are going to start shaving your armpits now.  Are you also going to be wearing eyeliner and pumps?  What about all those 'feminists', I mean if you believe in the yin and yang of things, after you shave your pits, your wife might decide she isn't going to shave hers.  Next thing you know you will be the one on the couch pregnant and she will be out making a buck and demanding a warm meal waiting for her after work.

LMAO!!!! I can't talk about you V_Man! I don't think I'd ever shave my armpits, but I will admit that more than one young lady has asked me to "trim" an area of my body if I wanted them to continue to perform a certain "deed." You guys can call me whatever you want...IT WAS ALWAYS WORTH IT!!!  ;) :D ;D :o

Actually I have already offered to stay at home with any children while she works. Several times. At first she refused to take my offers seriously. Eventually she said that it can not be that way because I am the man.

I totally understand a woman wanting a guy to keep his crotch hair trimmed, but one of the things I like about my wife is she doesn't want me to shave my chest hair NOR MY BACK HAIR.  She calls me her "oso" and prefers me hairy...

Same thing with my wife ... she would be horrified at the though of me shaving my armpits.  She actually told me once that crossing your legs looks effeminate, so I try not to do that much when I'm on the coast.

V_Man, I'm surprised your wife would want you to do that ... she's a rola?  Just tell her that only gay guys, body-builders (almost the same thing), and swimmers shave their pits in Oz ... that will change her mind.  ;)

Si! Claro, una Bogotana.
I didn't think of the body-builder idea but it may not work on her because she admires the body beautiful.  I've repeatedly told her only gay people here would do that. She insists it is not gay and it is a turn off for her.
I went through the same thing with manicures. While online my family said it was gay. She told them directly that she can assure them I am not gay. jajajajaja!

Jajaja exactly!!
I have told her countless times that I am a barbian from a long line of proud, wild, infamous barbians who raped and plundered their way around the world before 'settling down' to live with canabal, stone age warriors. As with most women, those words go in but what they actually hear is: "Here is a great opportunity to civilise a man who will be a wild man in those times I like it that way".

Frankly it just encourages her.  ::)

Cocaine jokes? OK, here goes:

How much cocaine can Charlie Sheen do?

Answer: Enough to kill Two and a Half Men.....  :D :D :D

.....anywho, yeah when my wife first arrived I had to educate her on how ignorant most people were about Colombia. There were a few jokes made that she didn't like so I let her in on what people knew, or didn't know about Colombia. TV shows and movies really play it up too. I rented Mr and Mrs Smith(I think that's the name) with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The very first of the movie was supposed to have taken place in Bogota. In one scene there are helicopters flying over and it looks like a war zone. Of course it is fictional. She said Bogota has never looked like that but I told her that is how Colombia is portrayed in movies and TV.I think that is where alot of the perception comes from.

What's amazingly unfair is that Colombians make exactly the same types of assumptions about grinogos from our movies and what they see in the media. And believe me when I say they have plenty of gringo jokes too. But mentioning cocaine in a humerous manner isn't acceptable? Please.

mmmm
Isn't that simply human nature?
What if I made jokes about slavery or some other racial topic that is a 'hot button' to people from the USA? What percentage of people in the USA would think it was inappropriate?
Colombians are sensitive only to certain topics. They don't mind being made fun of in general.
I'm not sure how that is different to certain topics in the USA, England or anywhere else.

I'm not saying it is balanced or even logical. I am just not clear that it is unfair.
