"Field of Dreams"
« on: April 26, 2012, 06:26:52 PM »
As I begin this I am not sure of exactly where I am going with it,  maybe just a lot of words.  This is NOT a glowing tribute to Dennis "Living the Dream" Levy,  rather my own thoughts about DL,  some may have truth,  some not so much.
Oddly enough when I had cafe last with DL,  about two weeks ago,  I asked him if friends or family ever asked him,  as they did me,  "What would you want to do if you died in Colombia?"  Our thoughts were the same,  I die here then bury me here,  why not?  DL and I were as different as night and day,  but all of us, no matter great differences,  also have ground in common if one cares to look.  DL did need Colombia to give his life a reason and fulfilment that he did not have,  or could not find in the States.  DL was one of the type of guys,  because of age,  looks,  lack of confidence,  a compilation of things,  could not really find a date in the States.  So Colombia gave DL an opportunity that he never had,  or would have in the States. To DL's credit he did stay pretty much "in his league" as far as his dating and relations with the women. His period of "dating" here opened up a world that he had never experenced and he did really enjoy that.  I am not referring to the sex part so much,  although that certainly was a part of it, as much as just the opportunity to meet so many different women.  Maybe as much as the "women thing",  or more,  DL really liked,  maybe even loved being a an "expert" on the living/hanging/dating in Colombia.  He did answer a boatload of questions that people had about Colombia.  I doubt if he ever left any query unanswered.  That filling a need that others had gave him a feeling of being "necessary" which was a great source of self esteem for DL.
We are all sinners and saints,  right and wrong,  light and dark,  none are fully one or the other.  DL,  if nothing else,  did what others dream about.  He stepped out,  took action and fullfilled what previously had only been a dream.  He did tell me,  at our last cafe,  that moving to Colombia turned out to be better than he had ever imagined.  Maybe it would have been a tragedy if he never came to Colombia.  All things come to an end,  that is life.

Actually in was a Mexican, Emiliano Zapata, who said "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees".

I'm still in shock over Dennis...I've been reading his memorial page but haven't been able to think of anything proper to say there......just got married and that happens. A similar thing happened to a coworker about 10 years ago....she had been married about a month when her husband was killed in a car jacking.....on his way home from work, broad daylight and in the "good" part of town.

Good work Mickey.  I concur.

My time in Colombia could have ended different for me too, for all of us.  It is not all roses there.   But, Colombia gave to me, like it did to DL, a brand new lease on life. And what is THAT worth?  To live life in many colors and flavors and virtually without bounds, as opposed to a grey existence, overly predictable, and limits growth.
