This will be of absolutely no help to you Maritime04, but I'll post it for the other Canadians ...

In my province (Ontario), the government funded health insurance plan is not available to newcomers with Permanent Resident status (like my wife) for 3 months.  I purchased travel medical insurance from Blue Cross so she's covered.  The cost was approx. $350.

Filing for AOS shouldn’t have anything to do with health insurance. Are you doing a fiancée visa?

I don’t think you need any kind of traveler’s insurance for her. Just keep it simple.

Where do you get your insurance? If you are covered through your employer, then they should be able to add her to your policy effective when you are legally married. Some insurers may require her to have an SSN before they add her to your policy.

If she comes over on a K-1 visa, get her a Social Security Card, marry her, and add her to your health insurance policy.

If she comes over on a CR-1/SR-1/K-3 visa, then get her SSN after she arrives and add her to your policy.

If she has any pending health/dental issues that need treatment, I would generally recommend having her take care of those before she comes over.

I put my wife on my insurance through work before she arrived but we were married in Colombia but it was before her AOS and she didn't have a SSN then. When my Mother-in-Law visited I got some travelers insurance for her.

I'm self-employed and when my wife saw the cost of health insurance here and what it covered she didn't want me to buy it.

You should be able to use Traveler's Insurance for the gap till you can get her on your regular insurance as a spouse.  And you shouldn't have to wait till open enrollment.  Any big company will have "Life Changing Event" rules for new spouses or children to get them on your policy.

I added my wife to my work insurance as part of the "Life Changing Event". My company gives us 30 days after the marriage to add a spouse without having to wait for open enrollment.

If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

As most of them do, which I was just about to post myself, but you beat me to it.

Maritime, just check with the HR person in your company to see what their policy is. Bet you that you have 30 or 60 days to enroll them. And if she doesn't have a SSN number within the time limit, that's their problem, not yours, they can just use a dummy number for her until the real one come through.
