What did him in was his frozen US bank account and it begs the question as to why his account was frozen. Maybe it's a good idea to have two or several accounts to be on the safe side before venturing to a foreign country.
I'm having trouble to believe the woman's story though. She should have known long ago that he isn't her type, long before she learned about his frozen bank account and why would he worry about his engineering project first and much later visit the hometown of his potential gf. Things don't add up and it seems there is more to this story.
Believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see.

He sold his house, truck and motorbike and left for Ukraine to further study the method here.  :o

After finding no support for his project in various Ukrainian cities and being evicted from a room he was renting, he said he boarded a train to Chernivtsi, hoping finally to meet his Yulia and settle down. :o

But the news header says "American stranded in Ukraine in online dating scam".   ::)

The victim of an Internet dating scam.   ::)

Is he going to run for governor of Arizona again when he comes back?  ;D

Sometimes when you try to use your debit card in rapid succession or enter the wrong password a couple of times your bank freezes the account thinking there is fraud. Not uncommon and just takes a call from you to clear it up. Could be what happened to him. Agree it's always good to have two debit cards for just such a case.

Actually if this guy had moneys in his account/s, if he informed his bank, credit union credit card companies--whatever, that he was traveling abroad, he most probably wouldn't have had this problem. I always tell my bank and company reps for any credit cards I might be using when and where I'll be abroad and how to reach me. I usually keep important phone numbers separate from my credit cards, wallet and other valuables.

Good luck trying to calling the credit card company when your wallet's gone and their numbers with it--there are probably thousands of different Fed. Ex.Visa and Mastercard companies. They've called me when even small, but unusual charges have been made that don't synch with what I've told them and how I typically operate.
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

I am not buying this guy's story - there is more to it than what is being reported.

Did he have a return ticket back to the USA?
Why did he wait until AFTER he was evicted from his room & no support for his "projects" to visit the lady. Was he going to freeload off her?
Why was his account frozen? Did he take any steps to unfreeze it?
Why didn't he go to the US Embassy/Consulate or have someone direct/take him there? or contact them for him?

If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

It could have turned out worse. He could have actually met up with whoever was on the other end of that internet connection!!!
