Twenty days here in America- where we are at.
« on: February 08, 2011, 12:44:48 PM »
THE BIGGEST PURCHASE- an electric blanket. Keeping the house heated at night was becoming a pain in the azz for the kids. It has been a little cold at night- and during the day, according to Or. So, everybody is happy now.

We took the trip to the local social security office yesterday and registered her for her social security card. It only took five minutes and the card will be in the mail within a couple of weeks. Keep in mind that it takes several days for the Paperwork to be registered after arrival so it is not the first thing on your list of things to do. We also went to the DMV and ordered her a California ID card. Or doesnt want to drive yet-the corvette is a little too much for her.

With the IDs taken care of, the important docs can go in the safe.

My wife has been attending English classes for a week and a half. The instructor asked her if she would like to be in the more advanced class; she declined for now because it starts an hour earlier.

She started working at my friend's Thai restaurant last Friday and will work a couple of days a week. There are several reasons for this. It gets her out of the house, she gets to practice some of her English, she gets to associate with Thai people, gets to eat Thai food without having to cook it herself, and most important of all, she gets some money in her hand that is completely her money independent of me.

Her kids dont have time for her back in Thailand since they are busy being kids with school and friends which is annoying her. Trying to schedule when they are 15 hours ahead can be a little tough since the best times to communicate are when she is sleeping or they are sleeping. The 1 cent/minute phone cards are great for her to talk to here mother and other family members.

She sat in on a poker game last weekend and spends some time watching the World Series of Poker. Not ready for a seat at the final table yet but she is learning fast.

What you need is a yutampo. The girls in my house love those all winter. Much better than an electric blanket.

You can get one at Mitsuwa or Marukai. I think there's a Mitsuwa in San Gabriel.

You were there and didn't invite me? How could you?????????????   ;D

Sure - love to go any time. Recently, I though Seafood Paradise has gone a bit downhill. The last few times, though I've been to Dragon Phoenix (now called Seafood Cove#2). It has been remodeled and is fabulous. Don't pay any attention to the 5 year old reviews - it is great.

An electric blanket seems like a must, but we can't decide on the size. I prefer it as cold as possible while she can't sleep unless it's warm. In Taiwan they put the electric blanket under them and a thick blanket on top. Any ideas on the size? or do you just tolerate the heated blanket? I have a queen sized bed but we will probably switch to a king bed or two full-sized bed pulled together.

Electric blanket or electric sheets? For the sheets, queen and up is independent controls for each side. You can have it turned off on your side, and turn on for her side. I would know, I sleep on one now. (Helluva lot cheaper than heating the house and quite comfortable)

We got a queen size. I don't have to put it over me. Her Thai friends have assured her that she will not need it in a month or so as she adjusts and the weather warms up.

I do not have an electric blanket & have no plans to buy one .....yet.

I have 3 fleece blankets, 2 fleece robes & a snuggie for her, so that should be ok for now.

Our apartment is heated, that is one good thing that our super does right - give us heat 24 hours a day. There are times that I have to shut off the heat (it is shut off now) or open the window.
The problem that she have with the cold is when we step outside - it is currently 24° & windy and it feel like 15°.
If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

What size?

That’s an easy one. If you have a queen size bed, then use a queen size electric blanket. If you are going to purchase a king size bed, then wait and get a king size blanket. Remember that there are 2 sizes, King and Cal King (or is that just in California?).

Yes, queen and king size electric blankets come with dual controls.

Now why in the world would you pull two full size beds together?? That’s just weird.

Queen size beds seem more romantic than king size, right? Besides, for the cost of changing to a king size mattress set, and purchasing all new sheets, blankets, comforters or whatever, you could probably pay for another year of moorage charges for your boat… LOL!

No way we could do a queen sized bed. We both toss and turn in our sleep quite a bit. We tried a queen and king at hotels and the king is tolerable, but when we put two queens together at a different hotel she was in heaven. Aside from having completely different tolerances for cold. I sleep best at about 10F and she can barely sleep unless it's at least 70F. I'm sure we'll get closer as she adjusts to the weather and I adjust to her but no way I'm laying on an electric blanket...I'd never be able to sleep. Also, we have much different preferences in firmness of the mattress. There are king beds with different firmness to each side but they start getting expensive.

I thought two full sized beds would be a good idea but didn't realize full sized beds are only 75 inches long. My feet would be hanging off the end.

Oh well, see what happens. My bed is about 9 years old and fairly well shot...some water damage...really should buy a new one in any case. Throw the current one in the spare bedroom so there's something there.

Dual controls means you don't have to turn your side on!

You can special order an extra long one.  I had to, but you will probably have to do it at a specialty bed and mattress store, not just any typical department store.
